When I was first writing it was on an ancient manual Remington typewriter. The son of bitch sounded like anti-aircraft fire. A few years later I was on an IBM Selectric. Slightly quieter, but it could still jar the fillings out of your teeth. Compared to those, my Toshiba laptop is silent as the grave.

it can be annoying if you hear if all of the time. or when you are waiting for the results of something, like  " lets see what the cost of this is going you.....taptap this will cost you, and taptaptap add on this and it will be taptaptap, and oh not to forget this will cost taptaptap. then it gets irritating. just certain circumstances I find that tapping annoying . otherwise, I ignore it.

This only bothers me if it's extremely quiet and there's no other noise around. So I say, turn the music on while typing.

I have an IBM 1391401 keyboard from 1984, that was actually made in the USA. The keyboard usually goes for about $50 on ebay, because people love the way the typing sounds, because it has little springs in the keys that make a 'clicky' sound. I actually like the sound too. The dated keyboard really goes good w/my ten year old computer w/Windows Millennium :)

(is it bad that I don't even know what's on my own lists anymore? LOL) Nah, keyboard tapping not a big deal for me. Beats typewriters, that's for sure. The annoyance factor usually comes from what's actually typed sometimes rather than the noise that is generated from creating it.

I remember this being problematic back in my freshman year of college after my roommate got mono and started going to bed at 6pm each night. I always felt bad when I had to type a paper after she went to sleep on my beastly PC desktop keyboard. Fortunately, I got a laptop shortly thereafter and the problem all but disappeared (mostly because I could leave the room to do my work). Fast-forward to today....As key height decreases, the sound of each keystroke becomes less audible. Laptop and mac desktop keyboards are all driving quieter key action, so this will become less and less annoying over time. Hell...we might even see physical keys disappear entirely in favor of touchscreen thanks to the iPad and other tablet PCs (although I suspect we're a long way from that feeling even remotely natural). Until then...noise-canceling headphones!

That is funny. I'm a typist or used to be. There is not as much noise now. I hope it did irritate someone and them. What annoys me is the sound the typewriters used to make when they were on and not in use. That would drive me up the wall. I know my boss as temp Mr. B in San Francisco one time asked Michelle to ask me to stop typing that it was driving him nuts and I thought it funny.

I am rating this one as "very annoying" but exclusively with dedication. We all have to type on a keyboard--be it you are a CEO or Executive Pee On. I get that. What I don't get is that one person in the office, and you know who it is, who is Psycho-Typer. Psycho Typer clacks away on that keyboard so your office in New Guinea can even hear him or her. Psycho Typer thinks that they are really important, or doing something really important, or closing some big deal, or doing something with great consequence... He or she figures by typing loudly, and somewhat fast, everyone else is going to sit there and think "Wow, she must really be hard at work....closing that big deal...." For all we know, she could be typing up that Smith Report that is now 2 hours past due for Zelda who was taking a dump in the bathroom but emailed everyone to tell them where she was...which I reviewed about three points back in this survey.

Most of the time, it's no big deal. But there is one exception, that is so annoying that this still deserves a five star rating. When I was in college and living in the dorms, I had a roommate who was  a morning person. The first thing he'd do in the morning was get up and start typing like a madman. It annoyed the hell out of me when I was still trying to sleep.

While at work, and during breaks and lunch there is ALWAYS one person who's typing away totally oblivious to all who are trying to eat, talk, relax...

It doesn't necessary bother ME, unless the pc is next to the television, which I might be trying to watch or something...but...it REALLY bugs my mom, no matter what she's being distracted from. She absoletely HATES the way that I type, but when you type well over 80-90 wpm; there's really no way to be super quiet about it. I've gotten better, but she still complains every now and then
