I used to have one when my first two children were born; I found it in a garage sale for like 10 dollars I think and it was in very good condition. We lived in town and the sidewalks were uneven; those huge wheels took on the bumps without hardly any effort and the baby remained asleep. I think I gave it to my sister in law? The new strollers, especially the umbrella type are best for when you're doing a little shopping. They get in between clothes racks quite easily.

I guess the old saying about They don't build them the way they used to is true about baby carriages (or prams - thnks for the reminder about that, Earthbound) as well as for other things. I don't think I've seen an old-fashined baby carriage for at least 20 years - everything is plastic strollers with dinky little wheels now. They may be more practical in some ways (most, if not all, fold up so they are easy to put in a car), but there is something missing of the aura of a real baby buggy being pushed down the sidewalk by the mother (OK, OK, or maybe by the father). Like many people my age, when I was a young kid I made a very rudimentary racing car with some old carriage wheels a, a couple of boards, and a rope to steer with.

Ah - thanks indeed for the nostalgic flashback - we had one of these for our firstborn child. It was a wicker basket with a wine coloured hood. The frame was very sturdy and it had great suspension. I have fond memories of crisp autumn mornings, pushing the pram with sleeping child around the grounds of Nymphenburg Castle in Munich, which was close to our home, quite the proud father.
