It used to be that the progressive vote was limited to the two largest urban areas. Republicans were winning statewide elections pretty easily for awhile as Orange County and San Diego grew. But with the growth of the high tech industry in Northern California, the decline of the military industry in OC, and the growth of the Hispanic vote everywhere, the state is becoming safely blue, the recent Arnold coup notwithstanding. Moreover, baby boomers are buying up coastal property, so the rural areas to the north and south of San Francisco are pretty blue now. Still, almost all of the valley, mountains, and desert remain pretty red, and probably object to the "left coast" label.
