I'd have to say there is weight to this one because it is in fact a racial slur rather than a legitimate name. The Seminoles, the Braves, the Indians, all names for actual Natives. Redskins is like throwing the N word or any other common slur around.

I'm 15% American Indian and find this highly offensive. The high school I went to was called the Braves, which never really offended me, but they have changed that lately. Naming a team after the color of someones skin is old school offensive and I cannot believe they still use the name. Especially where our nations capital is at.

I went to a school where we actually changed our Redskins nickname out of sensitivity to those of Native American heritage. Took a long time for me to accept that redskin could be an offensive word, since for years I'd only heard it used with pride and positive sentiment. Eventually, I did my own research and found most dictionaries label it as disparaging slang. So, if you call a Native American a redskin in casual conversation, many consider it an insult. Of course, the opinions of the Native American community matter much more than those offended on their behalf. It seems the growing sentiment among those of Native American origin is to seek a different means for which their roots could be honored. I dont think sports fan have intended any disrespect, but fair or not the word has shadows of controversy.

In a country under attack by terrorists, overrun by red ink at nearly all levels of government and where poverty and starvation still exist, someone being offended by what the name of some football team is seems pretty stupid to me. Once you've got all your other problems solved, come back and we'll talk about how offensive the name of this football team is, ok?

The debate on this one could go either way. Me, personally, I don't care one way or the other. An old friend of mine, who was a Dallas fan, once suggested in his dislike of the Redskins, that they be renamed the Foreskins, after the moveable layer of skin on one's penis. Very amusing.

While I won't go so far as to compare it to the N word, I would say this is the only major sports team name that might be offensive. The team has been around so long, it kind of slips under the radar, but when you stop to think about it this is a very odd name. If they were called the Washington Blackskins the name would have been changed long ago.

Not offensive at all. If there were a profanity-named team, then that would be offensive.

And, Irishgit, as long as there wasn't a white person on the team--they wouldn't mind, since a minority of African-Americans use that word amongst themseleves now. Strange, but true.

Of all the real nicknames on this list, this one is the only one that seems offensive to me. Hell, native americans frequently call themselves indians and brave is a term of repect.

Redskin, on the other hand....well you might as well have a team called the New York Niggers.
