Ancient Agora, once a commercial and civic center for ancient Athens, was occupied for virtually all periods of the city's long history. As early as 3000 B.C. the area was used as a burial site, and continued to be used in various capacities until, following many foreign invasions, it was eventually evacuated. Excavation of the site began in 1859 and continues today.
