I was at work when it actually happened, but went directly to ESPN radio once I was in the car. They were talking about... basketball. Basketball!? BASKETBALL!? The Cards must have won tonight, I thought. Surely they would be talking about the Series if the Red Sox finally won it. I listned to them talk about the Lakers... I think... not a big basketball guy. Suddenly, with an oh by the way tone to his voice, the host starts talking about the Red Sox victory. After being a semi-Red Sox fan since the days of Yaz, Freddie Lynn, Jim Rice, Bill Lee and the original Pudge, I could only think how anti-climatic that was for me.

At home, unable to sit still, pacing as they got closer and closer and closer and not daring to believe they could do it; because I KNEW that such a belief would doom them. Such is the insanity of the fan. Particularly the Sox fan. When Renteria hit that squibber I managed a choked and breathless There it is.... and while my sons jumped up and high fived each other, I just stared speechlessly at the screen.
