Today is April 12, and on this date in history, in 1861, Confederate forces started a cannonade on the United States garrison holding Fort Sumter in the harbor at Charleston, South Carolina. This act caused a reaction in public opinion similar to the attack at Pearl Harbor or the 9/11 attacks in New York.
The resulting war changed the United States more than any event in the history of the country.
If you are ever in Charleston, take the excursion out to the fort that is still in excellent viewing condition.
