 | GenghisTheHun (168) 04/06/2006 | This one really nailed it. We had 10% inflation, high unemployment, 20% interest rates, hostages in Iran for hundreds of days, a failed rescue attempt, a military that literally was falling apart, and a president comtemplating his navel much of the time in Camp David worrying about malaise in the country!

 | JackCox (0) 10/22/2005 | I'm a liberal and I honestly think that Reagan absolutely destroyed Carter when he used this slogan. It was exactly the line that needed to be used and it clinched the election for him.

 | EschewObfuscation (61) 07/05/2005 | Nothing stuck to Carter like this tar. Every challenger has tried to ply this on every incumbent since, but nobody could deliver the line like Reagan. With a prime rate of 18%, unemployment creeping toward 9%, inflation at nearly 12%, the 79 (I think) hostages' year old captivity by terrorists in Iran hanging over the campaign, this had the impact of a bayonnet thrust on Carter.

 | abichara (60) 07/04/2005 | This was probably the clincher that won Reagan the 1980 election. Other candidates have tried this tactic against the opponents facing difficult times, but Reagan's closing in the 1980 Presidential debates only one week from the election captured the difficulties of the 1970's and people's desire to move away from the failed policies of the past. Especially since Carter had ran in 1976 on a reform platform, it made it all the more poignant that indeed he had not come through with his promises. While it may have not been entirely true, it was a great political move on the part of Reagan.
