I've dealt with City Carshare before and I like the premise. It's a non-profit with the goal being to provide users with a transportation option without having pay the high expenses associated with owning or renting a vehicle. Magellan's comment has persuaded me to consider this option for myself.

I belong to City Carshare and it's pretty cool. Here's how it works - City Carshare has pods all over the city with a stable of cars. You reserve a car in 15 minute intervals via phone or online. It costs $4 per hour to rent a car (plus the $10 per month membership). You agree to always return the car with at least a 1/2 tank of gas (they provide the credit card), and you're on your way. There just happens to be a pod located about 50 yards from where I live so it's super convenient. For example, today I had to go to the bank. It cost me $2 to rent a car for a half hour (just about the same as the bus) and it saved me about 45 minutes versus the bus. It's a pretty cool program... they estimate that for every member, they take about 10 cars off the road - talk about efficiency.
