tourists often head straight for beach on landing here at airport but san jose and central valley has more to see than any area of costa rica see http://www.orbitcostarica.com

The country is great, the people are great, the food can be great, but San Jose is kind of a pit. Not as filthy as others I've seen but nowhere near the cleanest either. Lot's of pollution in a tiny city with little narrow streets. At the same time it's not the most exotic Central American city either, there's fun stuff to do but nothing exceptional. Although I'd also say it's probably safer than a lot of other cities in the region. If you go, and I'm sure this is everyones intention, but make sure you get out into the country and coasts they're much nicer.

As much as I like Costa Rica, San Jose is an absolute dump. I lived here for a couple of months, and while the people are very very nice, and the culture is cool - I would escape for either coast every chance I got. Best thing about San Jose is that you can get on a bus for a couple of bucks to anywhere in this magnificent country.

The capital of the only country in the world which has lived up to Mahatma Gandhi's dream: A non-violent & pacifistic world! Costa Rica doesn't have a military! :o)
