Christchurch, founded in 1850, is located on East South Island, New Zealand, on the Avon River. Christchurch is New Zealand’s 3rd largest city, and had been called the most “English” city in the country. Christchurch is the commercial center for the Canterbury Plains, noted for food processing, meatpacking, and its woolens industry. Lyttelton is the port for Christchurch. Sites in Christchurch include Hagley Park and the Christchurch Cathedral. Christchurch has garnered the nickname the “Garden City of the Plain” for its numerous public parks and botanical gardens. The estimated population is over 500,000 residents.
