Negril is NOT for everyone, it is one of the most beautiful places on Earth, and if you have respect for another culture and the people you will not be disappointed. If you decide to act like a jerk, you'll probably and rightful be treated like one. Jamaica in general comes in 2 flavors....resort, aka prisons with gold bars, which might as well be any ole tropical location, you get a sterile watered down version, oh yea and it'll cost 3 OR MORE times what a real experience will. Yes, you will encounter "higglers" aka folks trying to make a buck to get by. Take a good look around you, arn't we all? the differance here is the Jamaicans are proud warm people, who honesty want to show you what they have created....can you carve a piece art from wood? RULE #1:SHOW RESPECT, if you don't want what is offered to you, can you look someone in the eye,and repectful decline with a "NO Thanks Mon" and you give a fist bump to this stranger and say the word "respect" ? If YOU think you can manage s... Read more

My husband and I spent a week at Couples Negril for our honeymoon and it was fabulous.  Beautiful, spacious suite, fun water sports, great food, and even better drinks (all unlimited!).  I can't comment on the town of Negril because we didn't leave the resort, because we were having so busy relaxing and having fun at the resort.

The beach is beautiful and the food can be great (if you happen to find some good local food). We stayed at a small local-owned hotel and I wouldn't recommend that unless you're ok with the heckling and the constant interruptions of beach vendors. If you're in a resort you'll have a blast!

I'm a native new yorker living in the bronx and i have never felt as threatened for my life as i did in negril. do not leave your resort beach front. believe me when i say they are watching the tourist. a guy told me what room i was staying in and to make me feel more secure the lock on my room door was broken ( of course we left that hotel and found another one up the road), the peddlers will harass you every 5 steps you take on the beach, selling food, random crap and of course loads of weed. dare you decline the offer they may (and did to us on several occasions) catch an attitude! we even had a guy try to sell us a cd of his new record. when we declined, he and his croonie decided to threaten us with gun signs. the beach was gorgeous but you'd better get there before the peddlers do which means prior to 10am. staying cliffside is o.k if all you plan to do is jump from the cliff. also if you plan to eat, put in your order and go swimming for say an hour. i was disappointed with ja... Great place if you have no plans to leave the resort grounds. We felt very uncomfortable leaving due to Jamaican's coming from all directions to get in your face and sell you stuff. Very quiet. Life after 8:00pm was non-existent.

negril rocks. No 20 story resorts, unobstructed beach for seven miles, cliffs to dive from. it's the best place to relax and get away without busting the bank. The ride from the airport to Negril is about 45 minutes, not 2.5 hours as previously stated.

After reading some other reviews -- I believe it is all in the timing (regarding other guests). We were there May 30-June7 and it was EXCELLENT! If risque behavior bothers you - don't spoil it for the rest of us. If nudity bothers you - same thing. If people having sex at the side of the pool bothers you - then this isn't the place for you. Otherwise - go, be open minded, have some drinks, snorkel in the nude, go diving (the guys at the dive shack are AWESOME - and tell them that the crazy couple in Austin say HI!!!), enjoy the band at dinner, blow off what you might find annoying, and realize up front it is NOT anywhere else -- it is JAMAICA and the people are beautiful and lovely and wonderful. Get off the American high-horse and be human -- THAT is what Hedo is all about. If you expect it to be something different - then you are only setting yourself up. Stop comparing resorts - each are unique! Your vacation (escape, homecoming, etc.) is most dependent on your attitude. If w... Read more

It's a shame that this tropical paradise is inhabited by people that don't appreciate it. The streets are dirty, the beaches are dirty, everyone wants to sell you something, which is fine, but after saying "no" 5 times, you think they'd get the hint. Unless your going to a private resort, save yourself the disappointment and stay within the USVI or BVI, I like St. Thomas, St. Lucia, Tortolla and Barbados.

you WILL be hassled constantly to buy jewelry, carvings, pot, cigarettes or to have your hair braided. The beaches are okay, but much narrower than other destinations. Accommodations are primitive, no reliable bus service, roads are horrible and in such disrepair that it took two and a half hours to get from the airport in Montego Bay to Negril. Roads in Negril are windy and narrow and, with the drivers running at breakneck speed, make you afraid to walk anywhere -- especially at night. Native foliage is, however, quite beautiful and the diving is pretty good.
