Zakatak11 - I imagine you were visiting from some small town in the US where people walk around with their wallets hanging out of their back pockets. Madrid has petty crime like every world capital, but if you use common sense you'll have no problems. Carry your wallet in your front pocket and leave your passport at the hotel (you don't need it to sightsee). browniesmith - The people aren't rude, they're just not fake. If you're looking for big smiles and hugs stick to Disney. Also, Plaza Mayor has the worst restaurants in a town crowded with good restaurants. Expand your horizons and check out something other than the tourist traps. CharmingPrince - "Too crowded. Too over-populated. Got vertigo because of everything being so high up." Are you a Smurf? This is the capital of Spain, and we're not breaking any records with our skyscrapers. c1snoopy - "Crime on tourists is a major problem." Especially crime on tourists named Snoopy. I've lived here for six years and have never... Read more

Although a great starting point for visiting the quite fascinating country, Madrid had little to commend it beyond the usual fare.

Out of all of european cities, madrid and barcelona are at the top. Everytime i ask someone which country they enjoyed the most the always saySpain. Why, because spain is still yet "undiscovered" for the beutifull country it is. Many people don't bother going to spain because they don't know much about it. But if you go to spain you'll get enjoy it more than you expected. Its full of nightlife, History, Art, Culture, and good food.

The most incredible city in Europe.Didn't know much about it,but what an incredible surprise. The lifestyle is awesome. And the nightlife has to be seen to be believed. So under-rated unlike grey and boring London which is so unbelievably over-rated.

I just returned from Madrid and was one of many at the American Embassy seeking a new passport because of thieves targeting American tourists. They were able to steal my traveler's checks, along with my passport, and somehow cash them the very next day. Madrid is one of the most dangerous cities in Europe.

I found the people to be very rude and unpleasent. The mass transit system was very crowded and I think a guy was following us in the train station. He was probably looking to pick our pockets. Being one who likes history, I did not like Madrids modern look. There are some really good restuants in the Plaza Major.

Madrid is a very pleasant city. Comments based on one visit in 1992. Food was excellent; the evening tapa hopping is a real treat. Best filet mignon I ever had was in Madrid - they really do a great job with steak. Wines (reds) were very good. I wasn't too impressed with individual sights in general, although the city is beautiful in its own right. The people were very friendly (but English wasn't spoken an awful lot). Hotel I stayed at was top-notch; elegant with all of the creature comforts (much better than comparable Italian hotels, if that conveys the idea). Even though there are other places that edge Madrid out in my estimation, it's still a very desirable travel destination.

My favorite city. Madrid has a little bit of everything - from historical sites, to a raging nightlife, to gorgeous architecture, to beautiful friendly people, etc, etc. I spent a wonderful couple of days in the old section of Madrid, immersed in the best nightlife I have ever seen. Hundreds of cool, unique bars line the maze like streets, and there is plenty of action going on into the next day. If you have any energy left, make sure you check out the Palacio Real and the Prado.

If your a guy and you can't get laid in Madrid, well you probably never will. The women outnumber guys 3-1 in the city and its a party every night of the year. Its an incredible place that everyone must go to.

well, very attractive for those interested in architecture and culture in general. A great museum ( "prado museum") and incredible & extrange buildings like two 30ºinclined towers in this way: / \. A visit to the giant undergruond railway (nearly 120 miles) is a must.
