Atlantic City has really revamped in the last several years, and can be a great alternative to Vegas. It is cheaper than Vegas and has a beach, which is always nice! They have recently added some top-notch restaurants and while it can never be Vegas its the closest thing on the East Coast!

Atlantic City is a fun place to go if you want to do some gambling, or even to just hang around the casinos and get drunk for free. You can't beat those free drinks. The casinos are massive, and a few are extremely gorgeous, classy and not tacky at all (Borgata, Taj Mahal). The boardwalk is pretty great during the summer, and the pier is nice to walk through or find a nice restaurant, but it is mostly a bit seedy outside of the main part of AC (where Caesars is basically), and there are more exciting boardwalks on the Jersey shore. It is indeed amazing how such a noteworthy and popular gambling destination on the east coast with many ties to NYC has remained to be such a shithole in most of the areas away from the casino. There are definitely slow but steady efforts to make AC a more pleasant place to go outside of the massive hotels, but I think AC should have been improved at least 10 years ago already. It is a historical city, however, and believe it or not, there's a bit of Italia... Read more

If you're going to gamble, it's alright. If you want to do anything else, forget it. And stay on the Boardwalk, or be prepared to kiss your butt goodbye.

You sort of feel like your taking a trip to 1982 as soon as you step foot in AC. The city definetely has that feel to it, I don't know if it's the design of the buildings or the cigarette-stained ceilings or the pink, orange, or tan-checkered carpets or if it's the people who haven't changed their wardrobe in 20 years, or if AC is trapped in some sort of nexis of the universe that just happens to rotate between the years 1979 to 1983. But you get my point, it isn't exactly modern. I guess Trump feels that if people keep on dumping their dollars he doesn't need to make any renovations. I think irishgit said it best - if you're going to gamble, alright. If you want some excitement you better go to Vegas.

I went to Atlantic City for the first time this past May. I have never been inside a casino before in my life. Walking into Trump and Taj Mahal was an amazing experience for me. The atmosphere of the casinos with all the classy architecture, flashy lights, and diversity of people made an unforgettable experience. I only spent a few hours though and didn't gamble much. Just as the other commenters wrote, outside of the casinos, Atlantic City is a dump. It is an interesting place to visit but not a place to live. The southern Jersey coast, from Atlantic City to Cape May, is also a good 2-3 hour excursion if you are in the Atlantic City area.

This is the worst vacation destination ever. The scum of the earth hang out here. I'm a New Yorker, and even *I* was scared to walk on the boardwalk at night. You can tell how classy this place is by the number of people wearing sweatpants. If you wear khakis instead of sweats, the boardwalk scum will harass you because they think you're rich. And the casinos are ugly, ugly, ugly! Donald Trump has no style...you can see it in his buildings and his hairdo. Go to Vegas for a better gambling vacation experience.

Atlantic City is a dump and it is amazing to see people who seem to be to their last penny gambling it away at the craps table. Still, A.C. is the best gambling on the East Coast. There are a lot of options on the boardwalk, even if it does get pretty crowded. If you aren't a high stakes gambler, be aware, it is pretty tough to find $5 and $10 tables at night, near impossible on the weekeend.

I think Atlantice City is kind of an in between town. Sure it's got some of the old gambling area feeling to it but man is it surrounded by an absolute dump. It's too damn depressing to drive through the outlying city to get to this overdone center of wealth. Then you get to watch the old folks betting their social security checks.

The town is like a war zone, but you're not there to soak up the local flavor, you're there to gamble. Atlantic City is old school.
