Genesis 3

2 stars go to Genesis for their puppet work in Land of Confusion....the other star goes to the little known fact that Phil Collins invented the waffle-style french fry.

Genesis is a paradox to me. They were King Crimson copiers in their early days and Journey copiers later. Peter Gabriel dressed and performed like as much a queer as David Bowie or Freddie Mercury, then left to have a relatively normal and uninspiring solo career. Overall, they lacked the virtuosity of the better prog bands. The only release that really interests me is THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY. At least they put all the pieces together for that rather long moment.

I saw Genesis last weekend and I must say that it was out of this world!!! Never did I think I could be so entertained!! (Even when I did not know 2 of the older songs!!!) The whole band was excellent and I would recommend anyone to see this band before they never return to the USA!!! The whole concert was a class act!!! The hard earned cash was most definitely well spent!!!! 5 stars and more!!!!!

UPDATED yes my wife and I managed to secure GENISIS tickets for Denver and I must say this Saturday is going to be great!!! Waited along time to see this band and I'm very happy to have spent my well-earned cash!!!! I will re-post after the concert! As for those who have commented about this band in a neg way one thing to say; "All you have to do is turn the music off, if you don't like them!!!" As for overrated, 73,000.00 people in Philly did not think so!! Nor the millions of people who have bought and seen Genesis. How many bands could boast in 20 years that they pulled a crowd of 73 thousand!!! Not many! Not sure if they could even do it now!!! Leave this BAND alone as there is probably more talented in one band member in Genesis that 3 up to date bands today!!! Gone are the days were music is produced by men and women that know how to play more than 3 musical instruments and write the words!!!! Thank you for the music GENISIS

The thing is like most music you either love it or hate it, Genesis is one of those groups. They are still very popular and as for myself I believe they have produced some of the best works of music around, with some of the best musicians collected in one band!!! Looking forward to their world tour and will be on the list to get a ticket!!! Collins and Gabriel have done well, but let us not forget most of the band have had a huge influence in the music and have produced masterpiece after masterpiece. But then again what I like others may not like.

A very high-quality band, and although the die-hards will cry foul, Collins was a relatively good singer, no worse than Gabriel. 'Mama' is a great track.

Genesis, like Fleetwood Mac, is one of those bands that probably needs two entries on this list, namely one for the earlier Peter Gabriel era (1969 to ~1976) and the later Phil Collins era from that point to whenever is convenient. My exposure to the former era is extremely limited, but it seems rather safe to say that given the small but dedicated fan base and the lack of mainstream commercial success for this era and given that a good to great rating would largely hinge on having more widespread recognition, this era shouldn't effect the bottom line overly much for this list. As for the latter period, the Collins era started off well with some solid efforts, namely "Duke" (1980) and "Abacab" (1981), which were still rooted in prog-rock but with better song structure that gave the band considerably more mainstream recognition (e.g. "Follow You, Follow Me", "Misunderstanding", "Turn It On Again", "No Reply At All", "Man On The Corner"). However, post "Abacab" the band became increasingly more pop oriented with an inverse reaction for its rating for this list.

1 + 1 = 1 and not 2 that is 1 star for the bombastic and OTT pretentious Gabriel period and 1 star for the naff Collins AOR period.

With a line-up that contained the wonderful and irrepresible Peter Gabriel, as well as Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Steve Hackett and Phil Collins, they were my favourite rock group - during the seventies. Their 1974 double album, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, remains my all time favourite album. Until then they were so different and original... but then Gabriel left, then Hackett - and then they were three - hmm, say no more!

They have put out some of the best music for me that I can listen to over and over and not get board. I like the music with Peter but Phil is all I ever heard on the radio with the group. All the albums are awsome. The loves are good too. The make really good vedioes to go with there songs. I just wish radio did not cut up Tonight tonight, Shortin Abacab, and played the whole song to No SON Of Mine. Ihear they might get back to gether in 2008 with all the members and that would be awsome to see them play live again. I got one of my best friends hooked on the phill stuff with the band. they are by dout my favorite band of all time

Did some interesting and offbeat material, and some pretentious and overlong stuff during the Peter Gabriel period, a mixed bag, you kinda had to be in the mood for them. They were far huger worldwide during the Phil Collins years, but the vast majority of that music was dull, slick, corporate, connect the dots kind of music, that yuppies and Top 40 radio bought hook, line, and sinker. Plastic, tiresome, AOR and MOR tripe, in other words.

I've been a fan of progressive rock for years, and it's taken me a long time to really develop the proper respect for Genesis. Their best music is not immediate; it has to grow on you, slowly. But it rewards you handsomely when you do finally recognize the brilliance of it. I'm talking mainly of the work they did from "Trespass" through "Wind & Wuthering." After Steve Hackett left, it was a hit-and-miss affair. I'm not down on their pop output; I just don't think a lot of it stands up today as well as some of the more adventurous, artistic early stuff. My only real gripes with the old stuff are the dreadful production values on some of the early albums and the fact that Tony Banks really overplays and comes up with some of the most annoying sounds from his racks of synths. But few can hold a candle to Phil Collins as a drummer, and Mike Rutherford is a terribly underrated bass player. Peter Gabriel, of course, is a genius.

I don't think i can sit through listening to one of this bands albums. It can get kind of boring. They made some great hits though. I think the Genisis album that was made in 1983 was one of the best ones i listened to. It has the hits illegal alien, and taking it all too hard.

They were good with Gabriel but most of the Phil Collins era Genesis was garbage. Actually, I confess to liking the self titled album with Mama and Home By The Sea. But the rest of the Phil Collins stuff is either mediocre or downright dreadful.

two stars for the Peter Gabriel years and One for the Phil Collins. I'm not much for Prog, but i think Genesis, under Gabriel's vision, had the potential to take the elongated song strucute and obtuse lyrics into a more populist direction while still maintaining enough of an artistic edge. maybe kind of like a better Yes. the phil collins years are mostly a joke. sure i liked Invisible Touch in 1987, but i was 13. he gets one star b/c the first few collins led Genesis albums in the late 1970's aren't too bad. a little more arty and keeping within the overall vision of the band. the junk they did in the 1980s and early 1990s nearly wiped away anything Pete Gabriel had to do w/the band and whatever artist merit or legacy they once had. oh, and Genesis mock 3, w/o Collins was even worse.

As with most progressive rock bands, Genesis takes a lot of getting used to. After giving them a rating of 4 for about a year, I am now changing to 5. It has taken me a long time to realize just how good these guys really are (or were, when Peter Gabriel was there). Songs like The Knife, Fountain of Salmacis, and even Supper's Ready, which I didn't use to like, are now some of my favorite songs. They deserve all the popularity they get in prog circles. These guys were (and maybe still are) good.

Gabriel, Banks, Hackett, Rutherfors and Collins (only on drums) are the best description of what music should be. Inteligent lirycs, amazing vocals, incredible atmospheric guitar, perfect keyboards and excelent drums. Sadly Collins turned them to a cheap soft cheesy ballads band.

Gabriel, Collins, Hackett, Banks and Rutherford are the greatest group of musicians ever...their music invites no comparisons because it is on a level far above others. It's a shame that they are so misunderstood and underrated by those who are ignorant of what Genesis was and seem to think it has something to do with Sussudio.

A great band with Gabriel and after it is nice to see a group grow ,in the mist of personnel changes."The Firth of the Fifth" is one of my favorite songs as well as "Supper's Ready".Both Phil and Peter help to define the group in different ways. And as much as I love the early works it would have gotten a bit boring ten more years of the same of sound. They at least avoided that which ever band does, get in a rut.

A fantastic, much-maligned band. Collins got a little too attached to singing, and Rutherford managed to play guitar AND bass and still go mostly unheard, but from 1972 to 1991 you could count on some magic on those albums. "The Battle of Epping Forest" is my all-time favorite song (and the origin of my handle), and Tony Banks is the Eric Clapton of keyboards.

Typical example of industry-standard '80s commercial pop; technically competent but uninspired. It's not enough to be able to sing and play; you have to have something to say. Even at that, the talents of Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel--two of the most overrated artists in a decade full of overrated artists--were nothing to write home about, certainly not enough to "sell" these mediocre songs.

Actually, I think Genesis is still a group. They have now added some Scottish guy as lead singer to replace Phil Collins. Haven't heard much of them for about 8 years, but honestly I don't think I would recognise them without Phil Collins.

If you want to have the best description of what Genesis were - and are, then read "American Psycho" by B. Easton Ellis. You will find out things that you'd never have thought about. Because Genesis are much more than what they seem, and their music is one of the best examples of an eclectic production, and an eclectic way to deal with life. The pure musical counterpart of Madonna's changing habits.
