One of my favorite quotes, and one of the most appropriate, not only to war but to everyday life.

One that goes hand in hand, though from normal life is this: "The best laid plans of mice and men go strangely awry." I forget who originally said it, but I've seen it in action.

Sounds nice, but in fact many plans of battle have survived contact with the enemy. Certainly the initial invasion of Iraq did.

This statement (which I think is right on the money) could be updated to reflect 21st Century realities: "No military effort authorized by conservatives ever receives prolonged approval from the American media."

Any model, plan or system of thought in the final analysis has to be tested in order to claim its plausibility. We can plan, deliberate and execute a plan of attack that would seem ideal, but even that changes after it has been challenged. In a world with individual interests, that's simply reality.

This is the truest statement about planning ever.

Guderian has a few really good quotations. Including, 'Strike hard and fast and do not separate', 'When the situation is obscure, attack', 'Whenever in future wars the battle is fought, armored troops will play the decisive role', 'If the tanks succeed, then victory follows', 'There are no desperate situations, there are only desperate people', 'The engine of the tank is a weapon just as the main-gun', and my all time favourite, 'You hit somebody with your fist and not with yout fingers spread'
