On their debut, they were more like Quicksilver or Country Joe, but darker and heavier, with hellish lyrics about dying, bad trips, insanity and the like. Very talented musicians, influenced by bluegrass and hard jazz, offbeat but interesting lyrics, and a good band to point out to those who erroneously think everything in music back then was about flowers and teddy bears. The first record was mastered improperly, leading to pans from the press, but these albums and an e.p that came out earlier were quite impressive. Lawrence Hammond had a quivery voice at times, but these guys rocked pretty hard and were better than the obscurity that awaited them, among the best obscure bands of the whole San Francisco scene.
