 | jaywilton (26) 02/27/2005 | Whenever I'm in LA(and I haven't been for a few years),I always try to stop here and hang out on Fairfax;one of the great old Jewish neighborhoods, that there are fewer of.As I'm writing this in Detroit,I'm glad to hear that it's still in business;several years ago,I was seriously depressed when I heard that it was going to be torn down and replaced by an office building, which is what tends to happen when the only concern becomes economics.
Anyway,I am partial to Detroit bagels-and I'm not real crazy about LA bagels(I've heard that it's the water).Who knows;maybe I'm just a bagel snob.In any case,I go to deli's mostly for the atmosphere-and Canter's is hard to beat. But there is some competition-Katz's in New York(Houston and Orchard-open since 1888),and my all-time favorite deli moment at the long-ago extinct Fridson's in Detroit, when a waitress lost it and told everybody to Shut up!
