Best of the worst;however, life's too short to be wasted on the greater of the many evils in the American beer industry.

The only reason why people hate this beer is because the hip crowd drinks it apparently. I live in a hipster college town and not many people drink it. I am not a hipster, but I do enjoy drinking PBR when I want a good cheap beer. The taste is very tolerable considering it's an adjunct lager. This stuff is very much comparable to other beers like Budweiser or Miller.

Rare editorial revision:

Despite becoming an annoying hipster-beer for the under-30 white crowd, it does not detract from the point that this is still a drinkable cheap beer.

The letter-perfect original review:

Gloriously cheap.

Probably one of the better cheap-ghetto college beers available. . .

On draft, it's probably a solid experience because it might qualify as one of the best cheap beers ever. . .which is like being the lightest kid at Fat Camp. But any beer fan should at least try it on tap.

PBR is horrible. It is like trying to drink a mouthful of malt. I drink beer very often. And I can drink A LOT of beer. I tried this, and actually vomited. I have never vomited on beer before. It should be called malt liquor instead of beer. I have 9 more cans left. I am taking them to a friend. I will never put this swill in my mouth again. I see "hipsters" drinking this swill all the time. Of course they are wearing eye glasses when they don't even have vision problems. So, that says it all about the PBR craze. There is NO WAY possible that any human being can claim this filth tastes good. I roll my eyes when I see some annoying skinny jean wearing idiot drinking this and acting like he is so metro...

Before this beer became "hip" and trendy, no one drank this stuff! Check out the age group of people reviewing it as 5 star, and you will see it's the 21-24 year age group. Yes it's cheap, but that has nothing to do if it's good or not. Miller High Life and Old Milwaukee are in the same price range and they are much better. Watch, in 5 years from now Milwaukee's Best will be the "cool" beer to be seen drinking.

Good beer, really cheap, and the cards under the caps are a plus. My roommate and I have already collected 4 or 5 decks.

Update: It's actually a really good beer out of the bottle or if on tap, out of the can, however, I admit, it's not so great. Reading through the reviews below is kind of like reading the reviews for grizzly chewing tobacco, although even less coherent. Some good laughs though. At least with the new filter on the recent reviews page, we don't have to put up with these things anymore unless we're looking for a laugh or two.

UPDATE: So I may have overrated it a bit a few years ago (I wrote the above stuff in 2007). But I still hold that it's decent out of a bottle or on tap. So I'm dropping it to four stars, and note that I'm only rating it from a bottle or on tap. The canned stuff is too different to consider in the same rating.

Yeah, it's like making love in a canoe (as Monty Python put it). They did make one helluva dark beer way back when: PBR Bock, with the little goat head on the can. Best cheap dark beer there ever was.

Disgusting swill. It is palatable only when ice cold, but will still give you the shits the next day. If you have a few more dollars get something "expensive" like Budweiser.

I agree. PBR has a bad rap. It doesn't taste all that bad, and it's cheap. Maxim magazine had a beer taste test a couple of years ago, and it came out near the top. On the other hand, it gives me one hell of a headache the next day.

After drinking hundreds of cans of Pabst during the mid 1980,s while in college, i graduated and thought that i had to graduate to a higher standard with my beer drinking. I fell in love with New Castle Brown and for many years was my number one brew. But two years ago i had a party with my old college friends and to come to the party you had to bring a 12 pack of you favorite college beer and it could not cost over $5. Friends brought Shaefer, Smidts, Schlits, Genny, Red white and Blue, and so on, since then i have come back to my true love of Pabst. It is a very smooth tasting beer with very little afterbite and when served cold in a can it cant be beat. It also helps that at my distributer it is only $11.99 for a 30 pack. Long live the king......Long live Pabst Blue Ribbon

First of all, I am (or rather, used to be) a beer and wine snob. Before I moved from the country to the city, I home-brewed real British and German ales, using the best possible ingredients with excellent results. I poo-poo'd all mass produced American lagers, considering them to be made from inferior ingredients and not worthy of ingestion. Then, I bought a six-pack of Pabst just out of morbid curiosity. I popped the top off a PBR long-neck, poured it into a chilled pilsner glass, and took a sip. It was actually crisp, refreshing, and had some good mouthfeel and a subtle aroma of hops and malt. It tasted... like beer! It actually had a fairly nice flavor (though definitely light rather than robust), and most remarkably did not suffer from the slightly sweet and disgusting aftertaste of Budweiser or Miller. It was clean, refreshing, and actually tasty.

There are definitely higher quality beers out there, but I have to say that on a warm day, I can truly enjoy drinking a Pabst. I still think Bud and Miller suck.

By the way, I strongly recommend pouring it out of the bottle or can into a decent beer glass. It makes the flavor come alive. Straight from the bottle/can it is far less flavorful.

Best lower shelf beer I've had. I can only find it in a 30 case for 15 dollars around here, so it seems to always be out of stock. The cases are so big and the spot reserved for pabst is only big enough for 4 on a shelf at a time. It's an american style light beer that's way better than miller and bud, it's not the best beer I've ever had, but it's the best american lower shelf out there.

As far as cheap beer goes this one deserves 4 stars. Not the best macro-beer, but not too bad. The only complaint is that it's kind of the gut-rot of cheap beers and I will commonly get a BAD hangover from it, compared to a similar amount or more of other cheap beer

Pabst Blue Ribbon (going back to 1844) is a good, solid, mass-produced beer. It's good in cans and bottles, and really fine on tap. Since it's become one of the cool beers in the last five or so years, the price has shot up, so I don't buy it as much, considering I can buy comparable beers (Red Dog, Milwaukee's Best, etc.) for a much cheaper price. I like the fact that Pabst has not tampered with the recipe (like Schlitz has done over the years). It is what it is and if folks could not take a full-bodied American-style lager with bite to it, then Pabst was willing to go through forty years of low sales. So, I say, "Give that company a blue ribbon!" Awesome label as well. I really love the PBR bottles I've collected over the years, especially the one with the paper ribbon (bought in the late '90s).

On tap it's great. From the glass bottle, pretty darn good, in a can... fuck that noise. There is a college town that I used to live in and the bar there had it on tap for awhile, for 25 cents a pitcher on thursday nights. Five stars for great times. Four stars for overall taste and performance.

I am not sure why, but this has become the "hipster" beer of choice. It is certainly cheap and the only time I will consume it is at Bob & Barbara's in Philadelphia, where their signature "special" is a can of PBR with a shot of Jim Beam. Since Pabst Blue Ribbon is a rather dilute beer, it serves as a good chaser. The strong taste of bourbon overwhelms the crappy taste of this beer.

PBR is nothing special, but for the price you can do worse. Its not a beer I'd buy off of the shelf, but I'll pay for it if its the cheap option at a bar and I'm not in the mood to spend money on a better beer. Here in Maryland though, Natty Boh is the crappy, cheap beer of choice.

PBR is better than the beer most people drink and represents the American lager well. I appreciate their support for the music scene and that they have saved many local favorite beers. Most importantly, it is very drinkable considering the reasonable price.

A good journeyman beer. A little more flavor than most mainstream American lagers. Mostly see the canned beer in my area. I bought a bottled 40 ouncer a few weeks ago to try and it was quite good for the style. Wouldn't mind trying a fresh one on tap sometime.

I don't see why people buy Bud or Coors, or even Natty Ice when they're looking for a good inexpensive party / session / pong beer. This stuff actually tastes pretty good (as good as a 3.99 per six pack beer is going to taste) and is pretty easy to pound down if you can stomach beer period. Plus it's like the official beer of punk rock, and we all love punk rock don't we?

PBR won a taste award in 2006. It is one of the lighter flavored regular beers, very drinkable. It's a great summer time beer and an American classic; much better from bottles than cans, and one beer that I actually prefer a bottle over draft.

A lot of people bad mouth PBR, but I cut my teeth on this stuff in college. I could get 25 cent drafts in a place called the Plaza Tap Room, and I'd sit at the bar drinking this and eating hard boiled eggs. Mmmmmmm! Actually, if you get it in longnecks and get it cold, it's quite drinkable. I'll drink this before Budweiser.

This is a great beer!! I have been drinking it since the 70's and insist the stores in my area carry it. I have tried other beers and always come back to Pabst. I now live in a college town and often survey the students on their beer habits. Pabst seems to be coming back in style. It has great body with a real full beer taste. You better try it before it catches on and the price goes up.
