yeah good idea...why dont we give every single person a high school diploma while we're at it. those tests measure how hard you want to pass your classes and are neccesary to weed out the slackers.

During my final year at High School I remember they were just introducing SAT examinations in the UK to 11 year-olds before they entered High School and I opposed the idea as I didn't think kids that young should be put under so much pressure considering examinations and tests can lead to a lot of stress and sometimes even dire consequences (many high profile cases of suicide). Then my math teacher put a situation towards me that shut me up and made me re-evaluate what she was actually saying was in fact true and the need for this. There are many children who slip through the net with dyslexia, no concept of how to read or write and many other learning difficulties at a young age and by the time they reach High School you wonder at the age of 12-16 who has been monitoring their progress or why have they come so far and nobody's noticed that they are unable to have a grasp of some basic skills. So I would say that "Yes" it serves as a major importance to have standardised testing on our nation's youth.

While I see some of the negatives to current standardized tests, some type of standard needs to be in place for education. There has to be a way to measure a student's progress in a way that is equal for everyone. Without that kind of standard, then people will just complain that the next form of measurement is unfair and biased. If this were based on just grade pont average instead of grades, then a person would complain that someone with a GPA higher than theirs had an easier curriculum, thus making it easier to get an "A". There is no way to make everyone happy here. I do, however, wish that there wasn't an such extreme emphasis on the SATs (where entire classes are dedicated to just how to take the test) rather that concentrating on learning the subject matter itself.
