In Freddie we lost one of the most talented musicians in rock and roll. A wonderful showman with a beautiful voice that could cover a range of different styles, not to mention an extremely gifted songwriter (Bo Rhap people, genius!) I am a huge Queen fan, but even so I know people who don't pay much attention to them yet have enormous respect for this man. A huge loss to the world.

the world lost one of the greatest too soon. his sexual preference was not of interest to me or my concern since i wasnt sleeping with him. i was listening to queens music and thats where my interest lies and i am able to enjoy and appreciate his talent from the music and not to judge it by who he slept with.the ones that do are only denying themselves the opportunity of having their own minds to judge whether they like it or not. maybe its because their own expertise lies in that area and it covers up for lack of expertise of knowing what is talent or not. not everybody has to like freddie mercury but to care about who he slept with is just none of our business

Freddie is one of the greatest vocalists of our time, his range is unbelievable. It is a great pity that this great artist was taken so soon. The fact that some have given Freddie 1 star speaks volumes about the lack of taste in the world today. No one could or can sing like Freddie and they proved that at the tribute concert. The concert was good but no one equaled Freddie.

Genious in the purest form.

For God's sake, he had an AMAZING voice, the best ever for me!! there are still many homophobics around who dislike him just for being GAY

Sure, maybe he didn't have a great solo career, but he's still a music legend and deserves to be ranked above hacks like Kelly Clarkson, Michelle Branch, and Simple Plan.

He was a great singer (what a voice!) and a great songwriter. Bohemian Rhapsody was one of many great songs of Queen. He also was a great entertainer. It's a shame that he died so young.
Guava Monkey 03/09/2004
Some here have said we will never see his like again. Thanks for that, it's a huge relief to know.

This is my first review. I came straight here because Freddie is the most talented person who has ever lived. (sorry john L). Well i'll go over the old ground. He was primarily a fantastic singer. brilliant showman. brilliant writer. brilliant piano player. etc etc.. i don't know what else to say. anyone who gives this guy less than 5 is barmy. the usual negative comments about freddie is he was gay or ugly. big deal. what a megastar. i've noticed on this site most votes are love him or slag him. pathetic. all you dickheads out there name me someone more talented please...........and don't say dylan elvis or jacko there crap
Schluggi 01/31/2004
OUCH, that hurts. Who the hell had the idea and put Freddie into POP musicians? Well, but he's the shining star amongst all them others in this section.
peoriaaz 11/02/2003
One, if not the, greatest showman of rock/roll history. In addition, wrote the songs, played the instuments and "No Synths!"
DeathRattle 08/21/2003
Say what you want about his sexual prefrence, but no one was a greater singer in rock and roll history than Freddie Mercury. Freddie was a real frontman. The voice, the costumes, the songwriting ability: he had it all. Freddie is anomg the greatest. We all miss him down here.
Manager 08/21/2003
Freddy Mercury is very much missed but his incredible talent will live on. I don't think a majority of people ever knew (or appreciated) just how talented he was and what a lasting impression his "gift" gave to the world.

hello I´m Rocio from Spain. For me Queen are the best band in the world. Although I love Freddie He had and has the most beautiful voice that has existed, and he was so so nice, so human, so powerful,so special,so free, so marvellous...that I haven´t words to explain it,. I love Queen and I love Freddie forever¡¡¡He is the love of my life If some Queen fan want to write me, my mail is: [email protected] Friends will be friends¡¡

Why do I give Queen 5 stars and it's charismatic lead singer (who I loved) 1? THE MAN HAD ONE HIT AS A SOLO ARTIST! AND IT WAS A COVER SONG, AT THAT! If you give Freddy Mercury 5 stars for his SOLO career, then Ringo Starr (Yes, Ringo Starr) deserves about 10 as he had 5 hits. I love Freddy, but his success was with Queen. He was not much of a solo artist.

Freddie Mercury is my idol...pure genius...his voice so angelic...I can go on and on about how great he was...no other musician can even come close to him...it's sad how Freddie doesn's get the credit he deserves..all these crap bands are all in the spot light and they cant even compare to Queen! Queen did what no other band has done and NOBODY will ever be able to replace Freddie...
Queenlover-rtap 03/03/2002
THE ultimate voice. THE ultimate showman. An outstanding piano player and strong on the guitar too.An anything-goes lyricist who could draw on a variety of sources... who else but Freddie could have crafted something as touching as "You Take My Breath Away," as hard rocking as "Let Me Entertain You" as inspiring as "Keep Passing the Open Windows." and as humorous as "Delilah" (credited to the band, but obviously written by Freddie). In short, Freddie Mercury WAS music. I have already rated Queen and put in my comment on how they were the perfect rock band, but since this category is just for Freddie, I will add that his work away from Queen was also marvelous. I could--and do-- listen to the Mr. Bad Guy or Barcelona albums or his cover of The Great Pretender over and over again. THANK YOU FREDDIE MERCURY!! His genius, and that of his bandmates, has touched my life deeply.
iluvqueen 02/17/2002
Freddie was a genius. Keep in mind that he was born in Zanzibar, probably not even speaking English as his first language. How he managed to get from the coast of Africa to the front of one of the greatest British rock bands ever is close to miraculous. Add that to the timeless songs he wrote which just about any person can recognize--We Are the Champions, Bohemian Rhapsoday to name only a couple--and the fact that he could write songs from almost any genre--rock, opera, blues, vaudeville, ballad--convincingly, plus the fact that he picked up foreign languages like spare change off the ground--English, Japanese, Hungarian, German, Arabic, Parsi, Spanish--and could do anything he set his mind to--from ballet without training to piano playing without being able to sightread--and you've got one heck of a talented individual.

Freddy Mercury is not only a singer, he's history itself. Just think of how many people and artists were at the show after his death... What I want to say about him may seem simple, but in these few eords is the secret of music: every - and I mean each and every song by the Queen is a new world. Each one is different from all of the others, and, what's more important and astonishing as well: each one is beautiful! About how many singers can you say the same?
TheFreak 11/24/2001
No, the solo career of this singer who was two amazing to be human was not quite as good as it was with Queen. But yes, it is still more than worthy of five stars. Ten years ago to this day, the world lost a great man. I can't tell you how angry I am at VH1 for ignoring this fact. I encourage everyone to at least listen to a little Queen music today. I can't name any specific works of Mercury's that I like above the rest (except maybe "In My Defence"---great song), but oftentimes, that is a good sign with me for groups/musicians I love. I have a small collection of Freddie's solo work, as well as the work he did with Montserrat Caball`e, and I play the CDs often, especially when I feel depressed or angry. It comforts me just to hear his voice. I was only four when Freddie Mercury died of AIDS, and that was one hell of a miss for me. It must have been terrible for the rest of the band, watching him die, as well as his fans! He didn't even tell them he had AIDS until the day before he died. According to Brian May and Roger Taylor, "We didn't want anyone to know; we didn't want any pity or sympathy." I can't say I blame them. People were very uneducated about how you "catch" AIDS at the time, and ignorant idiots probably would have avoided him like he had the plague. Like Medgar Evers, I can't say he was the most attractive person in the world (even though half my friends and a few people on this site think he was hot) but his voice made up for looking a little strange. What might surprise people about Mercury is how shy he really was (found quote the other day: "People are quite apprehensive when they meet me. They think I'm going to eat them. But underneath it all, I'm quite shy."). Are all frontmen schizophrenics? And if I hear one single person refer to Freddie Mercury as "F*ggy Freddie", I WILL throw up on their head, or try to through the computer. He can't help it that he was gay! Show a little respect for the dead, for God's sake! I wish I could have met him; kind of hard to do so when you are a toddler across the ocean. If they ever invent a time capsule that can take me back to the seventies, count me IN, IN, IN!!! I need to escape from Britney Spears and *NSANE! "Save me, save me, save me!" Queen always was the best band on the planet, and the topic of discussion was the greatest singer in the history of the universe. Love you, Freddie!

The man alone was hardly a band at all.
musicfan 10/12/2001
Queen and Freddie Mercury were terrific. Generally speaking, their material was complex and way above average. Freddie Mercury was charasmatic and high energy. His voice was powerful and dynamic. They were a great band who have stood the test of time.
CastleBee 10/05/2001
I also enjoyed many of the now classic songs of Queen. I would venture to say that almost anyone could, at some time in his or her life, identify with the lyrics in the song, "We Are the Champions". Freddie had an undeniably strong and dynamic voice. It's always sad to lose someone so (relatively) young with so much talent and promise.
ellajedlicka21 10/04/2001
An operatic voice. He was a great frontman of one of the greatest bands. As told by the excellent reviewer MedgarEvers, it must've been devastatingly sad to watch such a genius slowly have his health deteriorate. In VH1'S Behind The Music of 1984, it shows a picture of a body drawn on the pavement with the caption written in: "DEAD from a lack of AIDS funds." Ronald Reagan can't be forgiven for this senseless ignorance and oblivion that he had toward AIDS.
MedgarEvers 10/04/2001
How sad it must have been to watch the man slowly become more gaunt and pale and finally die of AIDS. I wouldn't say that he most attractive guy, but no one ever has and ever will have the voice of Freddie Mercury. He could spit out words with such precision, had so much character in his voice and could really get a crowd going. He will not be forgotten.
