These heavy metal innovators are responsible for one of every aspiring guitar player’s favorite riffs in “Smoke on the Water.”

Every kid who picks up a guitar learns the opening riff to “Smoke on the Water.” But there’s a lot more to these hard-rocking Brits than that. One of the great guitar-rock bands of all time. They are the biggest influential band of hard rock in the world AND one of the cornerstones of Heavy Metal.

The Committee who decide to immortalize bands. Or not. They have painted themselves in a corner. Outside offor spite, I can't see how they ignore DP again next year.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is missing several bands that truly deserve the honor of "Hall of Fame" status. Deep Purple is the most deserving band to fall into this category. Please put Deep Purple in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!!!

British rock legends DEEP PURPLE were denied entry to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame this year — losing out to such artists as American pop singer-songwriter Randy Newman and R&B singer Donna Summer. The members of PURPLE, who will release a new album titled "Now What?!" on April 30 in North America via earMUSIC, say it is no big loss."I don't think the band really care, actually," keyboardist Don Airey tells The Straits Times. "It'd be nice but there's been no 'awwwww', no disappointment.""The gig's the thing with this band, the next concert. That's what it's all about and we're looking forward to Singapore."Newman's fantastic but he's not really a rock act, is he? Neither is Donna Summer, although she made one of the greatest records I've ever heard. If you're going to have a Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, let's have some rock and rollers in there."He added, laughing: "There was a kind of ripple of excitement, like 'Oh, we've been nominated!'. Then [lead singer] Ian [Gillan] said, 'Don't worry, we won't get in'."Gillan echoed those sentiments, telling AOL's Noisecreep: "I fought against, all my life, becoming institutionalized. So it really does not affect me. But on the other hand, my family and friends and everyone that has stuck with us all these years, it means something to them. They love that recognition. "To analyze it, and I'll try not to sound cocky or anything, I will say it as respectfully as I can, it's sort of like the Oscars and Grammys and the other awards like that — in the States, just like it is in England, and other places — these awards and honors are usually not decided by the fans, but by a cartel of influential people. These are the same people that decided THE MONKEES were America's answer to THE BEATLES. [laughs]"So I'm not too concerned about it. Maybe it will happen one day, bit if not, my diary is full and I'm very happy. It hasn't affected our career but it does concern the fans — that's who I feel for."

The discography of Deep Purple, an English rock band, consists of some 20 studio albums, at least thirty-four live albums, twenty-seven compilation albums, as well as fifteen videos and numerous singles.Formed in 1968 by Jon Lord, Ian Paice, Rod Evans, Ritchie Blackmore, and Nick Simper, Deep Purple released their debut album, Shades of Deep Purple, in July of that year. They have undergone many changes of personnel over the years, and today Ian Paice is the only member from the original line-up still with the band. The other members currently are Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Steve Morse and Don Airey.

Deep Purple are an English rock band formed in Hertford in 1968. They are considered to be among the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock, although their musical approach changed over the years. Originally formed as progressive rock band, the band's sound shifted to hard rock in 1970. Deep Purple, together with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, have been referred to as the "unholy trinity of British hard rock and heavy metal in the early to mid-Seventies". They were listed in the 1975 Guinness Book of World Records as "the globe's loudest band" for a 1972 concert at London's Rainbow Theatre, and have sold over 100 million albums worldwide, including 7.5 million certified units in the US..

The guys in Deep Purple are celebrating their 45th anniversary with another album and the latest round of tour dates. But if Metallica‘s Lars Ulrich had anything to say about it, they’d also have a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.Ulrich got into it with writer Peter Makowski, who interviewed him about his long-standing love of Purple and posted the results on Facebook (via Bravewords). It’s a fairly in-depth chat, in which Ulrich pays tribute to recently deceased former Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord and weighs the relative merits of some of the band’s many lineup changes. What really got Ulrich going, however, was a question about why the group hasn’t been inducted into the Rock Hall. “What you’ve got to understand is that a lot of the people that have run the selection process are critics,” he pointed out. “And Deep Purple, as you know, were never a critic’s band — especially in America, because their influence was probably felt more in Europe.”But, Ulrich hastened to add, “it’s only a matter of time. Rather sooner than later. We’ve already lost one member. The fact that Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath are in and Purple is not is one of the crimes of that whole institution. We’ll get them in soon enough. I’m working on it.”

Aside from helping to pioneer heavy metal, selling more than 100 million albums and bearing the distinction of being in the Guinness Book of World Records as the “loudest pop group,” Deep Purple also gave the world one of the most-sung guitar riffs of all time from “Smoke on the Water”

Deep Purple, though in second place at one point in the fan voting, somehow failed to earn induction into the 2013 class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Fans still have something to look forward to, however, as work on a long-awaited studio effort continues.
