they married and divorced twice. from what i read they had a very volatile time together. both had their faults of course. they must have loved each other to try twice, just could not live together very well.

The epitome of a Hollywood celebrity marriage, doomed to failure from the start. They did it twice just to convince themselves.

Classic Hollywood cheesiness; a drunken over the top Shakespearean actor and a bawdy broad with no qualms about procuring other womens husbands. They did seem to be a good match somehow; maybe they were just too much alike temperament-wise.

I suspect that their dynamic in Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf? was probably a close approximation of reality.
