 | GenghisTheHun (171) 12/25/2006 | Today is December 25 and Merry Christmas to all. On this date in history, in 1776, George Washington crossed the Delaware, surprised and routed a British mercenary force of mostly hired Hessian soldiers at Trenton, New Jersey, during the War of the American Revolution.
This is probably the most important event from the evacuation of Boston at the beginning of the war to the French Alliance in 1778. The American cause was "on the ropes." The army was dissolving and morale was at a nadir.
This amazing feat, rallied the rebels and kept the Revolution going.
Washington, in his brilliance as a Fabian Strategy commander, knew never to risk all, without a heavy chance of winning. That carried the American cause through eight long years of war to the ultimate independence.

They would have much more appriciation for their country. I wish people could see General Washington leading his ragtag group of soldiers across that ice filled river. I wish I could feel what it was like to stand in a boat filled with icy water with no shoes on and march through the deep, icy, muddy banks. I wish I could see Washington encouraging his men and picking them up when they fell. I wish I could see, and I wish everyone else could too. Seeing this event would give us all a much greater understanding of what people went through to give us the free country that we live in today.
