A magnificent, highly detailed and symbolic work, one of my favorite paintings. The artists self portrait hidden in the convex mirror in the background is a charming little conceit.

A beautiful, haunting painting. On the lighter side, I think the couple in the painting look like Gray's - you know, those aliens with the big heads and eyes

I think what makes this painting interesting to me is the little self-portriat of the artist in the convex mirror in the background of the painting. Most critics note the painting's many instances of symbolism (everything from the single candle on the chandelier to that little statue on the bedpost seems to have some meaning) and attention to detail. The depiction of the faces of the couple, though, just seems odd to me, with a strange, wooden quality.
