Wow, I wish I had found this site prior to booking. I would have never booked through Hotwire! I booked a hotel in Syracuse New York thinking I was getting a deal (aspromised in their advertising). After receiving the name of the hotel, I checked the site to see the great deal I got....I didn't . The rate was exactly the same as the hotel!
Why exactly would anyone use this service if the rate is the same as the hotel offers??? Where's the savings?? I called customer service the gentleman on the phone was no help.clearly frustrated with my questions ans would not either upgrade the room or reduce the price. He did offer to throw me back into the pool of hotels and see what comes up...however if the same situation happened ..tough luck. He would only do it once.
Please pass on the info, these companies need to be held accountable.

I have encountered a problem that seems to have happened to a lot of other people and I believe needs to be addressed in a larger forum. The problem is misrepresentation of products by Hotwire.com travel websites. In looking to find a hotel in Brooklyn, NY. and on a tight budget, I checked the Hotwire site and found an advertisement under Hot Rate Hotel for a three star hotel with an average nightly rate of $207 for $108 per night saving me $99 per night. The name of the hotel is revealed after the booking is complete and paid in full. Once I did that, the hotel was revealed as Brooklyn Motor Inn, a two star MOTEL according to 5 other prominent travel websites with one even rating it as one star. The average nightly rate for this property is $115. The average customer rating is 2.6 out of 5. When I called the customer service I was met with indifference and was told that I should be happy with $7 per night savings. I doing research on the internet I find lots of people with the same or similar complaints who were treated with the same carelessness and humiliation. I believe that Hotwire.com is making people make decisions based on misleading information and need to be exposed. Please help. Thank you for your attention.

Now THIS company is a good place to go for truly cheap and great deals. I used to be a travel agent and the discount block Hotwire has rivals the room blocks I used to reserve from our wholesale travel providers. I don't recommend flight arrangements through here (or any third part travel booking company for that matter). Buy airline tickets direct and take advantage of any reward, promos, or frequent flyer programs they have. Hotwire is not guaranteed with the airlines so you will expect changes to happen. I love hotwire for hotels. Hands down, Recommend to any and all. Last summer I got a top floor penhouse suite in a Resort on Clearwater Beach, FL for the price of a double regular room at a roach motel. Astonishing rates, good deals. Love Hotwire!

I have been used the Hotwire for almost 2 years. And I stop to use it recently because of few bad experiences. The hotel star rate from hotwire always higher than the actual rate. That's how they attract the first time user. Also there is no choice of non-smoking room, so you may get smoking room if the hotel is overbooked. And this happens to me twice.

jetradar.com is the only place I go to search flights now, after consistently finding them to find the best deals. They don't 'promote' any particular airline, but are totally transparent, plus they include the extra fees and taxes that you know you have to pay but many other 'comparison' sites leave off. This is helpful, as you can make a fair assessment of which is the best price.

My travel arrangements were made 6 months in advance. Hotwire emailed me numerous times with my flight arrangements constantly changing. One day before leaving, they attempted to let me loss one whole day on my vacation. When I insisted they fly me out as arranged or return my money, they flew me out on time. My vacation was great but upon checking out of the hotel I requested a detailed/itemized receipt and I was told I had to get that from Hotwire.com. I also requested a detailed/itemized receipt from Budget Rental Car and I was told the same thing, I had to get it from Hotwire.com. Upon my return home, I requested the detailed/itemized receipt from Hotwire.com and I was told "NO". I was told they don't give out detailed receipts. I contacted Budget Rental Car because they overcharged me by almost $350.00 for my rental car. Budget informed me that Hotwire paid them a mere $145.00 for my seven day rental car. I went back and forth with Hotwire.com for a detailed/itemized receipt and almost one month after my vacation I still don't have that detailed/itemized receipt. I informed Hotwire.com that I can go to Walmart and get a receipt for everything I purchased with the price I paid for each item but I can't get a receipt from Hotwire.com. I informed Hotwire.com that I, as a customer, am requesting a receipt for the money I spent and if it's requested i deserve to have it but they still refuse to give it to me. I will report Hotwire.com to the BBB and go as high as the U.S. Attorney General's Office because I deserve to see where my money was spent and how much I spent on each item, the flight, hotel and rental car. I do not recommend anyone to use Hotwire.com for their vacation rentals.

We bid on Hotwire fo a "4 start hotel" in Nashville because we wanted a nice hotel that would be a bit of an upgrade from our last two trips. We were given "Indigo West End" as the property. The reviews were iffy but we were hoping for the best, this is a "boutique" type property. If I could upload photos to this hotel you would gasp. It was filthy, dirty, grimy, falling apart, out of repair, nasty! Everything from the parking garage to the showers, windows, ceilings, walls, EVERYTHING! If it wasn't greasy and dirty it was falling down or not working! Definitely not a 4 star, or a 3 star...maybe a 1-2 star.

Booked a car on Hotwire for 165.19 from Budget. On Hotwire your credit card is charged immediately. Then to compare, went directly to the Budget site. Putting in the exact same information, the "Pay Now" price would have been 146.57. Boy did I feel stupid! Next time I definitely will think twice about using Hotwire and will probably just go directly to the rental sites.

I have never ever been charged in advance when booking a car, until you show up to pick up the car, once you reserve a car you cannot get out of it with HOTWIRE, unless you have a drs. note stating its a medical emergency. Misrepresents hotel amenities and services. Stretches hotel star rating.
BUYER BEWARE!!!
I have used Hotwire many times in the past to make hotel reservations with NO problems. However, it seems they now have very POOR quality criteria control and allow hotels to put what ever they what on the site to SUCK you in. Example: I made two separate reservations arriving Christmas day. Both are not what I thought I was getting or paid. The 1st 4 star hotel offers NO restaurant open until 5:00 pm. Our early morning flight arrives at 9:00 and checking restaurants downtown San Diego most are closed. What 4star hotel especially in a downtown location is closed during the day or at least offers room service for guests? After reading reviews it is also extreme pet friendly allowing pets in all public areas even the restaurant. Where I live this is a health code violation. Also NO pool! These things should have been posted on hotel description so I would not book, again misleading. This is NOT a Hampton Inn or 4 star services or amenities I paid for. The second 4 1/2 star hotel says it is non-smoking but after reading poor reviews and checking website found it offers smoking rooms. I am allergic to smoke so always try to book non-smoking hotels. When I called Hotwire I was told they don’t have to be 100% non-smoking just offer non- smoking rooms. I’ m sorry but that is not a good answer. ALL hotels offer NS room! Clearly Hotwire allows hotels to put whatever they want on the site to suck consumers in. The problem is after you book and pay you don’t get the services or star rating you thought you were paying for. After calling to try to change hotels to true 4+ hotels (not refund) I was told by a supervisor there are no refunds or changes and the terms state no warranty is made on hotel services. Shame on you….you have an obligation to verify hotels provide the amenities and services of the hotel rating YOU sell. Now I find out I could have booked the new NS Hilton on the water for the same price we paid of $99 on my own and had control of my vacation not to mention Christmas. NEVER AGAIN WILL I BOOK WITH HOTWIRE AND ADVISE TO STAY CLEAR OF THIS SCAM SITE.

I will never again use Hotwire. My trip plans to Vegas changed and they would not adjust my car rental so now I am out $180 and it would have only cost me $30 more to have it booked with Expedia and I would have been able to change and cancel my booking with Expedia. I will NEVER use Hotwire EVER again!!! I have no idea how this company stays in business....I guess just by ripping people off!

In mid August 2011, I booked two rooms in Biloxi for Labor Day weekend (September 3-5, 2011). I purchased the trip insurance, just in case. We planned to drive from Houston to Biloxi.

Tropical Storm Lee hit the New Orleans and Biloxi area on Labor Day weekend. I turned in a claim to the travel insurance company, Total Access. They denied the claim saying this was not covered! I guess that driving through a Tropical Storm to get to the hotel and then spending the weekend in the Tropical Storm shouldn't be a problem. I'm out $400+.

I have used Hotwire before but won't do it again. The chance to save a little isn't worth it. I found that many hotel websites will give you rates that are only slightly more and you can cancel if needed.

I have used Hotwire many times in the past and had no problems. But the problem I am currently experiencing will make me NEVER use them again.

My wife and I booked a hotel at a great rate. She used her Hotwire account and credit card to pay for it and when we got to the hotel it turned out to be very nice and normally cost twice what we paid for the rooms.

All was good until the day we checked out and received a bill for all 4 days at the regular hotel rate. When we went to the front desk to ask why they were charging us again after we had already paid via Hotwire, they told us that Hotwire had contacted them and told them that our account was used fraudulently and refused to pay the hotel.

Nobody from Hotwire tried to call us, e-mail us or make any contact at all with us to explain why they decided to cancel our account (or to even check if it was actually us using the account).

My wife called her credit card company and they said nothing had been reported to them and they had not reported a problem to Hotwire about the account and that it was working fine. We then called Hotwire and were told that we had to contact someone from a special department because nobody at the regular help line could help us at all.

The problem with that was that this was a Sunday and their "fraud" office was only open during regular work hours during the week. We were left paying a hotel bill that was hundreds of dollars more than we thought we had agreed to pay.

On Monday my wife called the special number we were given but it just went to a generic voice mail box that does not even sound as if it has even been setup to take messages. She left a message and a phone number. And waited. No call, no e-mail.

So she tried back and got the same generic voice mail box. No matter what time of day you call you get the generic voice mail box. And nobody returns the call or e-mails back. So she tried calling the regular help line again and after about 20 minutes of explaining what the issue is she is again told to call that number. When she explains that nobody picks up and ask if they can transfer her to an actual person in that department they just transfer her to that same pointless generic vice mail box.

It has been several days now and nobody has returned any calls or sent us an e-mail or letter or anything to explain why they left us stranded at an expensive hotel without any support and refused to pay the bill as agreed to in the contract we had with Hotwire.

The only good news is Hotwire did refund the original charge on the credit card they took when we made the reservation. But we still ended up stranded and had to spend hundreds more than we thought we would for our hotel. We would have NEVER booked at that hotel if we knew we had to pay the full rate.

Since this horrible experience I have searched the Internet for Hotline stories and found that our experience is not all that uncommon. Many other people have been stranded by Hotwire after they got to their destination and found that Hotwire refused to pay their hotel or care rental company (or Hotwire does not send the required reservation information to the hotel or rental car agency so they have no room or car waiting for you).

Since Hotwire will not always make good on what it promises to its customers and will randomly just leave customers stranded having to pay hundreds more than what was originally quoted to them, I am telling everyone I know to run away and avoid Hotwire like it is a plague.

UNHAPPY DISSATISFIED CUSTOMER!!- Tried to purchase a hotel on 9/20. Hotwire site state “site unavailable”, so I refreshed the web page and tried to book the hotel once more; the page showed Hotwire site was unavailable again- then booked from Priceline it went through without problems. So, after I stayed at the Priceline hotel, I come home today to find Hotwire has charged my account TWICE! So, I had to call the customer service and be on hold for about an hour- to be told by the customer service reps, “Hotwire can only refund one night due to policy”. Do you think that I should be satisfied with that?... "NO!", I didn't even know Hotwire had charged me and booked a hotel, let alone twice due to an error from their site! Regardless of being charged erroneously by Hotwire, this clearly shows that the company is unknowledgeable on quality and more concerned about quantity. Also the phone survey for customer service is pointless. I tried to make sure Hotwire knows how dissatisfied I was and the touch-tone system doesn't even work properly. Trust me when I tell you it is not an error on my part; I tried to have my boyfriend do the customer survey by touch tone on his phone and it wouldn't take any dialed number to allow you to take the survey. So, again... another issue regarding Hotwire- with poor display of resolution online and on-phone. Believe me when I say I am not one to be upset/ or even take issue with companies by far, but this has been the worst experience I have ever had.... and this was the first time I have every dealt with Hotwire.

These tips were learned through a first time purchase made through Hotwire on 07/20/2011 Confirmation 5090426857. Customer service refused to consider that I was given less than what I paid for even though they saw the star rating was downgraded a few days ago in Orbitz for the hotel. Stay away!!!! don't touch it with a 6 ft stick!

With deceiving wording they allure you to book expensive hotels and you end up getting cheap hotels. Hotwire will do everything possible to get rid of you if you dare to complain!!!

The hotels hate guests that booked on Hotwire and they will do everything possible to "punish" you for that.
You are way better off paying a bit more (id at all), knowing what you are getting and getting the utmost respect from the hotel.

I will NEVER do business with Hotwire anymore!!!

Hotwire are new to the UK and obviously have hurried their launch over here as the whole process is a disaster from start to finish. I booked a 'secret' four star hotel. It turned out to be a Ramada. Even by their own section on what the hotel ratings mean, they list Ramada's as three stars. I complained and told them they had charged me for a four star hotel and then booked me into a three star. They told me that I was wrong. Given that customer service is in the USA and I am from London and have stayed in that hotel before, one would think I would know best. They then emailed something about trying to 'exceed customer expectations' before telling me they couldn't be bothered to do anything. They didn't respond to my next email. I talked to a friend who had also used the site and had the same experience; booked a five star hotel but got a dodgy four star. This service may work in the USA but in the UK I suspect it is just a scam. For heaven's sake don't use these guys. I use Priceline and Lastminute for hotels and they work great. Stay away from these guys - they'll rip you off. You have been warned.

We booked a hotel through Hotwire online and their reservation status said the transaction did not go thro' as the billing address we had entered did not match the billing address on file with our bank. We contacted our bank for the same and they said the transaction did go through (infact 3 transactions were made by hotwire 2 were $1 transactions and one was the actual amount for the hotel reservation) and the billing address is exactly as we had specified. So now instead of planning for the holiday we have a charge on our credit card but no hotel reservation. We tried talking to Hotwire customer service and they maintained that the transaction did not go through so there is not much they would be able to help with. WE WOULD STRONGLY ADVICE NOT TO USE HOTWIRE

I will not use Hotwire in the future. Although I found them to have very good customer service. I spoke with Denise who was most helpful and explained that the rate change was beyond her control.

I booked a hotel room for a weekend stay. I concentrated on all the other reqested information and notifications and did not see when the site changed the date for a completely different weekend. I called the call center and that is when I got Denise and she said that there are no refunds unless I allow her to cancel the first (wrong weekend) and charge my card for the correct weekend. Guess what????? SUDDENLY the price jumps!!!! I JUST MADE THIS RESERVATION - I FEEL THAT AN EXCEPTION SHOULD HAVE BEEN MADE! This may have been a computer error. I do not feel that I entered the wrong dates for my weekend. She nor her supervisor would make an exception. I told them I would not use them again in the future and would tell others of this negative experience.

NEVER, EVER AGAIN will I use this outfit. Rented a car plus full insurance through Hotwire and drove the car for 3 days before receiving notification that I was NOT insured!! Talk about liability exposure. Turns out my state of residency made me ineligible for insurance through their insurance partner (?)....think they could have had that little tidbit on their website, or at least notified me BEFORE I drove the car off the lot??

Incredibly moronic things subsequently happened: I, of course, called them immediately to hear some little care bear suggest I call the rental company and ask if they could add insurance, like the rental company would just add insurance without seeing the car to make sure I hadn’t already totaled it(?!?!). Another call to Hotwire was made with the expected outcome; sorry, nothing we can do, it's our partner's fault, not ours. And on who's website was this transaction made???

Left with no choice I returned the car to the location where I rented it because of the ever-present liability exposure (that'll sure make you behave yourself!), plus having de facto lied to the rental company about having insurance. Not only did this significantly inconvenience me, but I had to rent another car (NOT THROUGH HOTWIRE!) with proper insurance.

The final Hotwire thrusts and parries, bobs and weaves, came in the form of two customer support email responses to my request for partial refund for the unused days I had paid for (in advance, of course). I had written a long, detailed email requesting this refund. The initial reply was from someone who had obviously not even read my email because they said that I would have to contact their insurance partner to get a refund for the insurance. Morons. I had asked Hotwire for a rental refund, not insurance refund. Their insurance partner didn’t charge me for the insurance they didn’t provide. I wrote this little bear back reiterating what I WAS asking for and received virtually the same response from a different little bear…….ok, maybe they’re not morons, maybe they’re just very well versed in deflection.

Final result: they still have all of my original pre-payment and I have the rest of my life to dis them….so help me win this small battle and find someone else to take your money.

After successfully booking airfare with Hotwire twice, we decided to give it a try for a hotel. Booked it, got the confirmation email, not overly thrilled with the place "revealed" (didn't really match the star rating, but whatever), hit the hotel website to get a map and directions and there it is... a price that is WAY LOWER than the one that Hotwire just charged me not five minutes ago. Well, to make a long story, short we've been arguing with Hotwire all day long... They'll match the price, but not beat it and not give us a cancelation either. This doesn't match up with the sales pitch in their ads at all. What about "unpublished rates to sell unsold rooms"??? Their response was sorry, it's policy (and the lady on the phone had the nerve to sound bored with me while she delivered the bad news). So, my husband gave it a try and got the same “we could give a flying leap” attitude and lack of response. Now we’re both completely ticked off. So, I gave up my ability to make choices with regard to MY vacation (where I stay, what type of room it will be, etc) AND I didn't get a deal in return. Why does Hotwire even exist? What is their purpose? Where is the value-add??? I reviewed their ads on YouTube – this is not what I was promised. THIS IS FRAUD.

I had two representatives tell me I could cancel a trip for my son three day before my trip, then the day before my trip they called back and informed me they were mistaken and could not cancel. Wish I had come here first before using hotwire. It would have saved me the grief I've just dealt with.

My experience goes as such:

This was the worst hotel booking experience I have ever had. I thought things were going great until the 'hot rate' hotel was revealed to me. It just happened to be in a different city than the one I had requested. Apparently the geographic area/ neighbourhood can cover a VERY large area, which they don't really make that clear when you go to book. The price might have been low to book the hotel, but I'll wind up having to book a different hotel becuase the one they gave me was so far away its not feasable for the event I'm attending. I tried to call them to explain my situation and I was more than willing to work with them to get a closer hotel (meaning still using their service), but they wouldn't hear of it. They just threw that book of a disclaimer they make you click on.. no transfer, no cancellation, nothing can be done to give a customer a break!

All I can say is how can this company get away with such a huge con!?

Hotwire can get you some crazy good rates on Hotels and I used the services 4 times and everything was alright. Good rooms, Good prices.... until my last visit.

Hotwire booked the wrong type of room and it was not what was paid for nor did it fit the search criteria in which was requested. I politely phoned Hotwire and guess who was out the money for that incorrect hotel room that cost $200 night.... Me. Not Hotwire, the customer. Even though it was clearly written on my reservation what my search criteria was. What they offered me was $25 voucher for my next purchase. Thats it, they never even admitted that they were wrong!

If you are risky and don't mind being super flexible (like sleeping on a couch in a 5 star hotel...) then use hotwire. If you want to be guaranteed that you have a comfortable stay during a vacation saving the $50 might not be worth it.

The hotel that we were booked in said that they have trouble at least 3-5 times a WEEK with Hotwire customers. They also told us that if we had called them stating Hotwire has a rate of $200/night in your area for a 5 star, they would have matched it... maybe even made it a bit better! They had nothing good to say about Hotwire and now I don't either. The hotel said that they tell customers not to book with them.

1 out of 5 is a really bad ratio, and now reading all the other reviews I am disappointed in myself that I didn't listen to everyone before.

I think Hotwire is a total con. Like most people I want to get a good deal and have been suckered by them a couple of times. I think they get the unbookable rooms that the hotels would not make available. Last night I stayed in a so called 4 star hotel ( It was only 4 star on hotwire - when * had booked it and looked at the other websites it was a 3 star) It was totally bog standard to begin with. Worst of all my room was right next to the elevator so i heard everyone going to bed. I think that the hotel didn''t use that room very often. Also it was freezing cold - and the heater was so loud that it was more appealing to freeze.
I guess we will wise up eventually. The basic rules about buying anything applies here - If you don't know what your getting - don't get it

Hotwire 1

We recently booked a hotel through Hotwire in San Antonio, TX. We arrived from out of state after midnight and all we wanted to do was sleep and then go to our planned activity for vacation. We were awakened to a thumping bass guitar Sunday morning that was vibrating our bed and caused a pounding headache in my already congested head (sick on vacation). I politely asked management what was the deal with the loud music and they stated that a church service was being held near the lobby. I said "well, can they at least turn down the bass?" Management did nothing. When we were checking out, I explained that I was very dissatisfied with our stay. We didn't mind the singing, but the bass guitar was so loud that we couldn't sleep and it gave me a pounding headache. They said that all they could do was offer us 2000 pts with Choice Privileges. I said that wasn't acceptable. It takes 6000 pts just to stay at an EconoLodge one night. I said you have a sign right here in your lobby guaranteeing satisfaction. All we wanted to do was sleep. Very basic. I complained to Hotwire and spoke with a supervisor. He told me that all Hotwire could do was give us $25 credit towards a future stay. Why would I book with Hotwire again if they won't even guarantee that one can sleep in their contracted hotels? Very unhappy! Will never book with Hotwire again!

I share the same sentiment with everyone. I wish I had done some research concerning, "Hotwire's Hot Rate." On the surface it sounds like a great deal offering deep discounts on hotels and airfare. However, just like with everything there are restrictions on the said deals. Unfortunately, these corporations can get away with robbery if you read their restrictions.

My wife booked a Hotwire Hot Rate from San Diego to South Carolina for $524 which was much lower than the average rate at the time. When she was set to depart, Delta - the airline that she was supposed to fly on, didn't authorize the flight. It looks like the awesome travel agency, Hotwire overbooked or oversold their tickets. My wife was left to buy last minute tickets for double the price of this ticket.

Concerning Hotwire's customer service I have words that are less respectable so I'd rather withold them. They could have been robots who just kept reiterating their company's policy of a nonrefundable, noncredible policy even if it was a fault of their own. What we have left is the customer who is left robbed and having the feeling of utter futility as they are stuck in the middle.

In my opinion, the business model is a good idea. However, it is a very dirty way to make their business on the misery of others and they should be utterly ashamed of how they conduct this business. I almost wonder how Hotwire is still in business. I would recommend anyone else but them.

I returned my rental car a day early to the Alamo located in Orange County. My sister became ill on our trip and we rescheduled our flights so that we could get home earlier. I did not have time to call the rental agency to advise them of this, however, upon the return of the rental car I asked the receiving agent if we had returned the car in time in order to avoid paying for a fourth day. She said that we had, but because we had prepaid through Hotwire we would need to call them for the refund. Consequently, when I got home I called Hotwire for the partial refund. I spoke with a representative named Sandra who said that she would just need to get confirmation from Alamo that their representative advised me that Hotwire would refund one day of the rental. She placed me on hold and tried to contact Alamo to no avail. She offered me the Alamo manager’s contact number and said that I could try contacting the manager at my convenience so that I did not have to continue to wait on hold while she tried to contact the manager. She said that I needed to get in touch with the manager and tell her that Hotwire needed confirmation to process the refund. After trying to contact the Alamo manager for several weeks and leaving numerous messages, I called Hotwire back to advise that I could not reach the manager to whom Sandra had directed me.

I first had misfortune to speak with Herbert. After recounting my situation to him, I immediately got the sense that he wanted to do everything in his power to deny me even the slightest amount of customer service. He did what he called “research” into my account and came to the conclusion that Sandra was mistaken. He informed me that Hotwire’s rates are the lowest out there and that because I received such a discounted rate, Hotwire could not refund me for the day I did not use. However, Hotwire was not the only car rental booking service to offer this rate, and the only reason I chose to book through Hotwire rather than carrentals.com (whom I normally book through and will return to from now on) was due to the fact that I have had good previous experiences booking hotels through Hotwire. I told Herbert that I understood he was just trying to do his job and asked if I could speak with his superior since he was not going to be able to accommodate my dilemma.

After some time, I was connected with Collin (employee #1615). Collin might as well have been a computer. Actually, a computer would have given me better customer service than Collin. I am infuriated at the way I was treated by him. After repeatedly explaining my situation to him over and over he would simply state that since I had failed to get in contact with an Alamo manager, I was not entitled to receive a refund. I tried to explain to him that essentially I was doing Sandra a favor by agreeing to contact Alamo on Hotwire’s behalf in order to process the refund. I could have told Sandra that I would remain on hold while she continued to contact Alamo, but I agreed to take the number and do it later on my own time on her behalf rather than waiting on hold for who knows how long and wasting both her and my time. Sandra never told me that it was my responsibility to get in contact with Alamo to receive confirmation that I was entitled to a refund. She gave me the option to either do it myself or wait on hold while she pursued the issue. Collin did not seem to understand this detail and maintained that I still needed to contact Hotwire myself in order to get a refund. I repeated that I have been trying to contact them for weeks but that I was fed up with it and thought that it should be Hotwire’s responsibility since Hotwire is the one that said I needed this confirmation to begin with. I recapitulated the whole situation to Collin yet again, detailing the entire interaction I had with the Alamo agent who said that Hotwire would refund me for the unused day. Collin then asked if I had this agent’s name. I said I did not, but that I do have a receipt which was given to me by the agent who said I would get a refund and that I could scan an image of it over to him and maybe he could decipher out the employee’s name or number somewhere on the receipt. He said he could not do that, so I tried to ask him if any of the random numbers on the receipt might be the lady’s employee number and he said that he would not be able to tell without looking at it and that since I did not know the agent’s name he would not be able to call Alamo himself. I asked him why then had Sandra been able to, and he said that he did not know but that it was not possible for him to call Alamo without the agent’s name. Exasperated, I asked him what he suggested I do, and he said to continue trying to call Alamo because it was Alamo’s responsibility to refund the money. Again I told him that I had already been told by the Alamo agent to whom I returned the car that Hotwire had to process the refund. Collin repeated that Hotwire would only be able to process the refund if I got a hold of Alamo. I told him again that I had agreed to call Alamo myself as a favor to Sandra rather than waste both of our time, but he again said that Hotwire could not process the refund because I had not gotten a hold of Alamo, and he was not going to contact Alamo without the name of the receiving agent. Essentially Collin succeeded in talking in circles like this with me wasting my time. I got the sense that he was enjoying this "game" in which he was getting paid to argue with me on the phone.

I Collin asked if there was any way I could get in contact with his supervisor and he repeatedly said no and that he had no supervisors. The only way to inform Hotwire about his lack of customer service was via [email protected] I have never been so turned off from a company from such detestable customer service, especially from a supervisor. He was extremely unprofessional and apathetic regarding my situation. He snickered under his breath when I got upset and kept repeating jargon that did not address my complaint. $17.76 is a measly amount of money and I am confounded that I have had to spend this much time and effort on such a small sum. But the fact of the matter is that I was informed both by the Alamo agent to whom I returned the car and the first Hotwire agent I spoke with that I would be refunded for the unused day. This situation was not about the money. It is simply a matter of principal that a company does right by its customers. I understand that apparently both the receiving Alamo agent and the Hotwire representative were mistaken regarding the information they conveyed. However, a company is obliged to fulfill the promises made by the employees who represent it.

I booked what I was told would be a Holiday Inn Express, Hampton Inn or a Ramada. It ended up being a Super 8. Not a big deal but our NON-smoking room had a distinct odor of a mix of mildew and cigarette smoke. It had multiple stains in the carpet and bed spread and appeared as though it hadn't been remodeled in decades. (ie: mold gowing in the cracks of the caulking in the tub. (it was filthy)

I asked the manager of the hotel for another room and was told it was not possible as all the rooms unfortunately were the same.

I called Hotwire to book another hotel. They would not book another hotel.

We didn't stay there and did not reveive a refund even though we never used the room.

Bottom line, stay clear of Hotwire, their customer service and savings are non-existent. I asked what the AAA rate would be directly from Super 8 and the rate was the same as Hotwires "lowest rate".

I booked the car rental with Hotwire 4 months in advance to my trip, thinking I could modify my plan if needed. 3 months before my trip, something urgent happen and needed to alter my plan. But Hotwire would not let me change, give me my refunds back or credit part of my money back. WTF! Hotwire is such a rip off, so unaccommodated and inconsiderate to their buyers. Such a mess up company/website! This is my first time and LAST time using this website/company. Rating is 0 star if I could.

WHAT A RIP OFF! DO NOT USE HOTWIRE!

Here's the summary:

Hotwire sucks.

Here's why:

I booked a 2 star hotel in San Diego while there for a job interview. I've flying back and forth regularly for the job search, so I was looking to save some cash. The 2 star chains they have listed include the Comfort Inn and the like, which I have stayed at and had no issues with. I am familiar with the area and selected a location that I thought would be clean and safe. Since they don't tell you the hotel name until you book, you are stuck with what you get.

What I ended up with was nothing more than a 2 star crackhouse located right next to a huge strip club with a bunch of seedy characters standing outside smoking lord knows what. When I pulled up, it was 11pm and I was scared. I didn't even go inside. I am female, traveling alone and didn't really need to fear for my life on top of being nervous for my interview (which was at 7am the next morning). Frustrated and unsure what to do, I drove away. I paid extra to go stay somewhere else rather than risk it there. (Ironically I ended up at the Comfort Inn which was actually quite pleasant.)

I waited until I returned to Chicago to call and complain. I actually ended up calling three times because I was THAT annoyed by each person's blanket response. They all said the same thing. "The hotel fits the 2 star criteria." I explained that this place was nothing like the 2 star chains they have listed on their site. The rating only covers the room and amenities, not the safety of the place, or the general area. The last woman even said the hotel had security that could walk me in from my car. What?! Who would think to call the hotel and ask for security to walk them inside?! Besides, I thought if I didn't check in I'd possibly get my money back. Wrong. I suppose I could've taken my chances on getting shot in the parking lot, but a pending wrongful death suit probably wouldn't have helped my case either!

I understand their policies are set b/c of their cheap rates and that refunding my $87 would surely bankrupt the company, but I would've appreciated type of refund, discount, voucher, Burger King coupon...something.

NEVER ever again will I book through them and I hope no one else does either!!!

Booked Comfort Inn Mayport, Jacksonville, Florida through hotwire on New Year's Eve 2010. Booked in by unfriendly clerk. Room was an outside room at back of hotel. It was dark, lonely, felt very unsafe. Assailed by totally foul odor when entered room, which we didn't recognize as smoke mixed with deodorant til later. We were not the complaining types at all, so we unpacked, with our 3 kids. As the night progressed, noticed cigarette burn holes in comforter, damp stained carpets (our jeans were wet when we knelt to unpack), no bulbs in some lamps, strange red stain on wall (bloody nasal discharge), toilet paper roll holder ripped out of wall, beer bottle cap in bathtub, uncomfortable beds. I was up many times in the night because of the foul room odor and noisy revelers. My child was up, coughing with asthma , from the smoke odor many times in the night. We had to use ventolin.
I was almost in tears in the morning. Couldn't wait to escape the foul odor of the room. Voiced my complaints to front desk staff who showed no empathy, offered no apology and just about rolled her eyes at me. Left my complaints in writing with her.
Contacted Hotwire as soon as got home on Jan 3/11. Spoke with front line and then demanded to speak to a supervisor. Wrote a letter to Hotwire headquarters regarding my experience and asking them to remove this horrible dump from their website and refund my money. Got a letter back which was a mass of contradictions from one Amy Montfils, who looks like she's the one who replies all the complaints. She told me I lodged my complaint BEFORE I stayed in the hotel, which meant she obviously did not look at my situation thoroughly. Looked like a form letter that she sends to everyone - just repeats what you say but does not offer any solution or recompense. She refused to refund the money and on top of that, insulted me, by saying that the hotel was "recently inspected" (another saying that seems to be part of the form letter spat out by Hotwire when customers challenge there star rating) and she was confident that the hotel met their star rating and would be kept on their website. So basically , she dismissed my experience. I was there and described my room in detail. I'm pretty sure no Hotwire "inspector" has been near that Comfort Inn. She also said that Hotwire "guarantees" a comfortable clean room. She did not seem to acknowledge that I didn't get this!
My experience is that Hotwire basically rates hotels the way they want, does not care if their customers suffer, will never refund any money, and will never take customer complaints into account. Their adage seems to be "NEVER BELIEVE THE CUSTOMER. They are all just out to complain". I have never seen such terrible customer service in an organization this big. They really should be sued for misrepresentation. Unfortunately, no one seems to be able to stop their terrible business practices.

My cousin called Hotwire to book a trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico in January of 2011. We called Customer Service instead of booking on line to coordinate our trip arrivals and departures, as we both live in different cities in the US. After we determined the amount of days of the trip and our hotel the agent then quoted us a price of $1,200 for me and $1,300 for her, this being a total of $2,500. We told the agent that we wanted to split the total and put the price of our individual trips on our credit cards. After collecting our credit card information she then put us on hold. When she returned she informed us that there was an error on my card and that she had to put approximately $1,500 on my cousin's card and that they would take out the balance of approx. $1,080 from card on Feburary 9, 2011. She then asked for our email address so that she could send us our itinerarys. I opened my email immediately and it was posted however my cousin did not receive hers. She informed the agent and she asked for her email again and said that she should be getting it soon. The next day it still wasn't there. On Sunday morning my cousin checked her bank on line and found that she had been charged an additional $653.00. This brought her charges from Hotwire to $1,800. Therefore our trip was costing approximately $300.00 more. We then conferenced a call to Hotwire. Long story short, the agent could not find where the additional charge was coming from. My cousin had to cancel her credit card and her company then began in investigate. A red flag went up for me when the agent stated that there was a error on my card as I had checked my account before we called Hotwire to ensure that I had the available funds. Of course we had Hotwire cancel the trip. It took my cousin a whole week to straighten this mess out and receive her money back into her account. This was a very stressful experience to say the least. Hotwire agents are incompetent, do speak English well and do not handle business well at all. The agent should have come back on the phone to inform us that there was an error on my card before taking it upon herself to put a large amount of the total on my cousin's cart. The moral of this story is 'NEVER USE HOTWIRE AND IF YOU DO ASK FOR AN AGENT IN THE USA!" Helen in Chicago

I urge everyone reading this to contact the BBB of California regarding this company. It is apparent that this company is in need of a serious investigation. I foresee a class action lawsuit in this companies future. Sooner or later companies like Hotwire always get caught. They will rip the wrong person off and have a major lawsuit on their hands. If I had the money or time, I would do it myself.
But here's my horror story. I booked a 4 star hotel at a 2 star price. HAHA. Well I would've rather booked a 2 star hotel with another site and got to sleep in a bed. That's right. They made me sleep on a couch. I had to go ask for a pillow and blanket. They guarentee that your room will accomidate the number of people reqested. When I contacted Hotwire, I was told that if the hotel wants to make you sleep on a couch, or a cot, that is their right to do so. Whats next? an air mattress in the lobby? Anyhow, don't bother contacting their customer service because you always get the same generic copied response of "we're sorry you were not happy...BUT....." BLAH BLAH BLAH!
So everyone who has been burned by Hotwire, join me in reporting them.

I carefully reviewed the options for booking a hotel in Houston. I did not want to stay too far from the airport. When chosing the location it stated it would be 7.7 - 12.2 miles from Hobby International. I booked it and ended up with a hotel over 20 miles away! I called and they said the mile estimation was "as the crow flies". Well that's helpful! Great site for crows but anyone else buyer beware!!

Do not book anything through hotwire, If anything goes wrong, you get sick ets. hotwire will not offer you a refund. We booked a car through hotwire and a week later on a months rental, my wife got sick and had to return the car and go home. Enterprise said hotwire would only be charged for the week rental and hotwire would not refund any of the $800 spent on the car. Valuable lesson is never book with these shysters.

HOTWIRE AND BED BUGS

I recently booked a NYC hotel on hotwire. I was happy enough with the hotel at the time. It claimed to be a 4* and even though every other site listed it as a 3.5*, I was content with the price and happy to stay there. A couple months later, I started to notice posts on various sites about the serious bed bug problem at the hotel. Granted, NYC has a problem with many hotels, but what was particularly concening was that the management of this hotel refused to admit the problem. One Chicago woman was even suing the hotel. And some of the posts were from the hotel's own employees.

I have a particular sensitivity to any insect bites and have a severe reaction, so naturally I was concerned.

I contacted Hotwire and explained the situation and after several replies back and forth, some of which were a complete brush off and didn't even address my concerns, but rather took the form of a pre-fab letter on another issue, they finally said that I would have to stay at the hotel and experience the problem before I could contact them to do anything. In other word, I have to get bitten (which would undoubtendly ruin my entire trip) before they would even consider addressing the problem.

That is the last time I will ever use this service and the last time any of my friends or family will use it. They may have saved a few bucks by refusing to change or refund my hotel, but they literally lost thousands in business.

So...BEWARE OF BEDBUGS AND HOTWIRE'S POLICY THAT THEY SHOULD BITE YOU AND RUIN YOUR TRIP BEFORE THEY TAKE ACTION.

Feel free to post this on any additional sites that will help people. I have and will continue to. People need to know what they're getting into. Sometime a good deal is a really really bad one.

I booked cars through Hotwire before, but I will never do it again!

I booked a car through Hotwire, but when I came to pick it up from the car rental I was informed that there was no reservation made and all cars were sold out, so I called hotwire to clarify the situation and was told that there was no reservation made on my name in any car rentals.....I was taking taxi all over the town in order to rent a car from someone because it was so important to have the car next morning.......later on I was charged for that reservation by Hotwire without actually renting a car. When I called them in order to get a refund, I was told that they unable to make a refund....after a day and a half of talking with all representatives from Hotwire on the phone I finally got my refund back. As I was told it was an exeption! Thank you, hotwire, for crediting my money back, but It was very unpleasant experience!

Beware of their star ratings. Their 3-Star hotel will not be any where close to a Holidays Inn or Double Tree, expect a 2-Star motel when you book on their website. Also, don't even think about calling for help from their customer services...they don't have any common sense....
