Late 19th/ early 20th century guy, a tough customer and John McGraw's right hand man with The Giants. Pretty fast for a catcher, and a good stick for a receiver, especially at that time when catching was thought of as almost exclusively a defensive position, and guys like Lou Criger played regularly with batting averages like .186: though that's partly because it was a low scoring pitcher's era. good defense, and is credited by some with inventing shin guards for catchers. Played for the Cardinals and began with the lousy 19th century Washington club, though he's primarily thought of as a Giant. Managed too with no real success. A Hall of Famer, and one of the better N.L. catchers of the first half of the 20th century.
