about a 3.5. I would try hard to talk him or her out of doing it anymore. But Eschew came up with a good reason why I might, turn this thief in. if my friend was caught and chances are they will be caught eventually. What kind of trouble am I in if they find out I knew?I would not need that.

A best friend wouldn't put me in a position like that, where I could also be potentially blamed and/or considered an accessory after the fact or what not.   In addition, it's my livelihood and my future at stake, and it's wrong to steal from anyone, let alone an emloyer who pays you to work for them.  It would make me wonder what the hell this 'best friend' had stolen from me.

Screw it, I'm covering my ass and I'd prefer they didn't speak to me again- it's not like I'd be accepting their calls from jail or the half-way house.

Lots of x-factors here, but I'll just play it with a couple of my close friends. I don't work with any of them, so I have no obligation to protect their companies. This means that by and large I could give a rat's ass on my end. One would have very limited access to company money and would need to be very creative to defraud his employer and the other would only have access to counted and rather controlled funds, so they'd have a hard time getting money that wouldn't get noticed, plus I consider them both to be unlikely thieves, which I suppose makes them pretty ideal for actually doing something if you think about it! Now, if either told me I'd likely keep my mouth shut initially and advise either on the lack of smarts being displayed in ripping off your means of income. If things got out of hand I might take either down for their own good.

'moral compass' listings do not take into consideration multiple factors that go into both a rating here and our actions in the real world. . .and the consequences are quite high school - 'never speak to you again' (?). . .there is a statistical certainly of us predicting our behaviors in these scenarios, but we cannot claim that we would always make the same decision twice because no two scenarios are the same. . .

This is a crime that doesn't pay. If you find out that this person is embezzling funds and you help in covering up the crime, you can be prosecuted as an accessory if a regulatory agency or law enforcement begins investigating. The government follows a "zero-tolerance" policy when it comes to financial crimes of this nature. If you're indicted for crimes like this, the prosecuting entity is assuming that there's at least an 80% chance that you will be convicted and will serve jail time. People even remotely involved in such a scheme will go down with the perpetrator. I definitely wouldn't want go to jail to cover up for someone else's crime.

Admittedly, it would be hard for me to turn in my friend, but it would be even more disappointing to find out that this person would be engaging in such reckless and illegal activity. The moral failing wouldn't be on my side for turning the friend in, it is on the other person's side.

Keep it a secret.  First of all, its none of your business.  Second, is it really worth losing a friend over?  I dont think so

I'd keep my mouth shut. Whether or not that person would never speak to me again, this individual has been my best friend up until this point. I would feel a sense of loyalty and allegiance so I wouldn't rat him out.

Turn him in, no problem. Unless he's embezzled enough money to buy me off. Just kidding!

I'm not an advocate of embezzling, but if my best friend was doing this, I would not say anything. Poor guy would would eventually get caught anyway.

I wouldn't rat out my best friend for anything short of saving an innocent person's life or wellbeing. A lot of you said "who needs a friend like that" or words to that effect. Unfortunately, all of my friends are flawed human beings. If you know anyone who isn't, please send them my way, so we can sit around and eat ice cream all day in Perfectville.

I thought I'd get cute with this one, but Ignatius beat me to it - I'd blackmail the embezzler! Seriously, I'd try to persuade him or her to turn themselves in and to pay back the money or, ideally, to put the money back the way they got it in the first place - obviously they were clever enough to figure out how to steal it, so they should be able to figure out how to unsteal it. Failing that, I'd turn them in - who needs friends like that. Keeping secrets like that come back to haunt you (this is just vaguely reminiscent of Cardinal Law and other Catholic bishops who covered up the misdeeds of sexual abusers in the clergy).

I would try my best to talk with him and get him to return the money. Would I turn him in? Tough question. I'd like to believe that I would do the right thing. but saying it here and doing it in real life are two different things. I have never in my life been a rat, so it would definitely be a struggle.

i would try to make them confess but if they promised me and i believed them i'd probably try to stay out of it. maybe this shows a lack of morality but I don't feel okay with turning in a good friend if they have realized their error and decided to stop.

well i wouldnt snitch unless necessary. i would distance myself from the situation and if that didnt work id speak to the friend and tell they better take care of the problem cuz i wasnt going down for it. then if the friend didntdo anything then i would know how little i meant and i would make sure the proper people knew at least enough to know i wasnt involved.

It would seem at this point I would be involved and could be accused of withholding information if the person was discovered. So, too bad - I'd sing like a bird (or squawk like chicken). I wouldn't be associating with this thief anyway after this, so why should I care if he/she talks to me again? (To Eschew: That's quite a story. I knew of a similar situation and that guy also ended up committing suicide. Very sad - definately NOT worth it.)

I'd turn them in, and if they never speak to me again; so be it. If they weren't committing crimes in the first place, they wouldn't have to worry about getting into trouble.

Maybe I'm just a little selfish, but if this person is stealing from work they would also steal from me and in a way they are. Their stealing could affect my future. If the company is making less money, my raise could be affected and if it's bad enough the business goes under and I'm looking for a new job.

This is easy on so many levels. Not telling anyone makes you an accomplice. I guess you could share a cell, maybe? You should be shopping for a new friend anyway...and get help...obviously your criteria and selection process are not sufficient.

I'd nag 'em about it, tell 'em that I think they ought to stop anytime they bring it up, but I think I would want their conscience to come around on their own.

Depending on how you acquire this knowledge, you could be prosecuted as an accessory. This actually happened to me and I know for a fact that you really don't have a lot of choice here. Not blowing the whistle makes you a criminal in most circumstances. NOW is it worth it, ignoble as it makes you sound? It was not a fun day hearing, Mr. Eschew? I'm Agent XXXX, of the FBI, and I have a couple of questions for you. Mind if I close your door? UPDATE: The rest of the story (well, part of it): Hal must have somehow known the jig was up that Monday, he had called in sick. I had to evidence to them (more than just stating) that I had no knowledge of the defalcation, which I was able to do. I consented to cooperate, and people began researching, tracing back transactions for the past 4 years (Hal's tenure) and found a total of 25 suspicious entries, totaling about $45,000. Two FBI agents and the company president went to his house and confronted him, he confessed. Time constraints do not allow me to express the torture we (including Hal, his wife and young children) all went through over the next 4 months, but I can assure you nobody deserves what has happened to him or his family. He was convicted, made restitution and served a few months in jail, but committed suicide shortly after his release from prison. Take it from me, it isn't worth it. A lot of innocent people wind up paying a dear price for something like this, along with a number of other unintended consequences.

I'd have to question why my best friend is so immoral or desperate as to be embezzling money. I would almost certainly tell someone, except I would talk to my friend about it first and see if I could maybe get her to confess herself or at least stop.
