Safeway has very high prices. I have seen identical items at other grocery stores for much less. I would not recommend doing any shopping there. Even items on sale at Safeway can be found at other grocery stores for less.

Extremely disappointed with their home delivery. Driver was really nice, told me that he could not double park and so I ended up carrying my shopping to my apartment on my own, which I didn't mind. When I checked my order, two veg items were bruised (one so bruised and bashed I had to use it in my cooking straight away) so I was not happy with the quality, having stated that I wanted fresh items. In addition they sent me a wrong item. I wrote them an email on the same day and lo and behold 6 days later I have not had a response, even though I have sent a chaser email. Their customer services suck!

I normally enjoy shopping at SAFEWAY AT SOUTH ROAD, MOORABIN VIC but this time I am so disappointed with their customer service at their Deli department. I am aware that they need 48 hours when ordering platters and I am aware that 'technically' it is less than 48 hrs (at 5pm Mon and need to pick up platters at Wed 9.30am) but the deli assistant told me that 'it should be fine' and it is alright to order it in the morning by phone and he gave me 2 names of who I should ask for. Come 9.30 am Tuesday, I make my order and requests for part vegetarian sandwiches & 2 other platters to pick up wed 9.30am and they ring me back and say that 'it is not physically' possible to meet my order as it less than 48 hours notice. Whaaaaat??? I spoke to both their Deli Manager and Store Manager and both their reply were the same about the 48 hrs notice. So frustrating! I was ready to make my order on Monday evening when I was specifically advised by their own deli staff that 'it should be ok to do i... Read more

Safeway @ Broadway & Commercial, Vancouver BC. Every time I go in there the staff are snobby if you're not "dressed right", ignorant of others walking down the aisles(ie, they don't move out of your way when you come along with your cart), the pharmacists are dumb, or deaf, I don't now which is more accurate, and they're ignorant. Did I mention that they're ignorant? This last trip just now, I bought some tobacco and instead of putting it on the counter while ringing it in, the "cashier" thought it would be safer on the floor. Then he proceeded to give my money the equivalent of a body cavity search "just to make sure it's real". All the while serving other customers that happen to walk up to the counter ignoring the fact there is a lineup. Is it part of their job to police the lineup or do I have to do it? Apparently, WE do. At this location anyway. Another time, I asked the pharmacist for a specific over-the-counter medication & they gave me the wrong one. Mistakes happen, but th... Read more

I've been a Safeway employee for almost 8 years now and I've worked at all the Safeways here in Humboldt County, California. I've read a lot of these reviews and most people would rather shop at Winco rather than Safeway. Personally my personal safety matters more to me then going to Winco for low prices. I'd rather pay more and feel safe walking through the parking lot to my car at night. Winco is known to have many scumbag shoppers/food stamp customers committ crimes or harrass other customers. No thank you! Some of you say that we as employees are slow and provide bad customer service? Your statements don't shadow over all of us employes. I bust my ass at work to try to get people through my line as fast as I can. Is it my fault my line is slow? Probably not. Maybe its the old lady writing a 5 minute check, or a kid digging out $10.00 of change out of his pocket and counting it out to buy soda, candy and donuts. Who knows! I can promise you that I provide excellent cu... Read more

I gave Safeway one star because there wasn't an option to give them a ZERO! I'm sick and tired of those Safeway Club Cards. I have never carried mine, and for the past ten years or so, have just used the fictitious phone number I signed up with. ...That is until recently when my phone number wouldn't work anymore. I had just checked out with a full basket of groceries but the checker wouldn't accept my phone number. I was told that I would have to pay full price, even though the next person in line offered to let me use her card. That wasn't allowed I was told. NOT ALLOWED! Who do they think they are. The manager came over and told me I would need to re submit the paperwork to get a new card. Well, I was so mad, I told them they could keep their full priced groceries, that I would go shop down the street at Fred Meyers. They actually let me walk out of the store mad (and empty handed), rather then scan a courtesy card. They lost more than a hundred dollars of business from me that da... Read more

Poor customer service in Bakery. Went in to order a cake this morning to be picked up tomorrow afternoon, they wouldn't take my order because it was 10:30 and cake orders are faxed in at 10:00. Gimmie a break 30 minutes is not going to make that big of a difference because I'm sure they didn't already start baking all the cake orders in that amount of time. At least make an effort to call where ever it is that you fax the order to and ask if this can be done. Our company spends thousands of dollars each year on at Safeway not to mention what I spend for my home shopping! They want to promote local spending and are always coming in to our office looking for business and this is the way we get treated. This isn't the first time this has happend to me but the other Safewas was in a different city, just goes to show that it doesn't matter which store you go to, none of them care. From now on I will be taking my business to King Soopers, I don't care that it's not just down the stree... Read more

Prices are too damn high, and they try to cover up the ridiculous charges with their stupid membership card. It's ridiculous. I wish I knew why they think high prices attract people...duh...it does anything but that. And btw don't be fooled by these commericals promising lower prices...because you're gonna drive to the store and find out it's not true. Even if they did lower prices, it's not really siginificant. And don't even think about working there. There are never enough employees staffed, and they expect 2 people to run the front end. No to mention, they neve give employees breaks or lunches. Bad, stuck up company with high prices, repetitive lies to customers, bad customer service and ridiculous expectations of their employees. I'll honestly laugh when they realize their company is done for with these rough economic times.

I love Safeway. It's my store of choice. It may just be inertia but when I go to Frye's I don't dig it at all. Safeway to me generally has clean stores and good sales, and I haven't had any inclination to shop much elsewhere.

The Safeway in my area is reserved for people who have too much money and need help lightening their wallet. Once an alternative supermarket opened nearby it became quickly apparent that we had been paying 15% too much on our grocery bill.

Do not shop at the Safeway store in Prince Frederick, MD. It is very dirty especially behind the sandwich counter. The employees wear dirty aprons and are incredibly slow. The floors and counters are disgusting! Don't even think about using the washrooms... they are even worse. This store is only nice because of the lighting and maybe that's to hide the filth!

Here's what I had to say on my recent blog about grocery stores in Portland, Oregon: "What they sell: Convenience and brand names... and your personal information. The Pros: You can find one just about anywhere, and you can get just about everything you might need on a daily basis for a reasonable price, particularly if you use your Club Card. They are beginning to offer more organic, specialty, free-range, and environmentally-friendly products, but you might not find exactly what you are looking for. You will find products you are familiar and comfortable with. You can shop online and have your food delivered to your home (I'm sure many of you know what it's like to attempt a grocery store trip with toddlers in tow). Some Safeway's include gas stations where you can get discounts if you are a Club Card member. Get more done in one trip. The Cons: Let's start with the big one. By now, I'm sure that many of you know the "membership card" game is a scam. Safeway is collecting, ... Read more

They are O.K. if everything you buy is on-sale. They were much better a few decades ago before the leveraged buyout that busted the unions. There were people there that worked most of their lives at Safeway and made good money until the buy-out.

As a former employee of the Sacramento (Arden Way) bakery (2007-2008) I would urge you never to purchase anything from here. The sanitation practices are horrible at best. Im talking mold in many of the bread machines, product that sits out for days before it is packaged as fresh. Many of the things that are used by the cake decorators sit in the fridge and mold excessively. If there is ever a question of my sincerity, all you need to do is look in the bakery at about 8:00 and look at all the racks with product on it covered in plastic. Your fresh made cookies, breads, and pastries are often times a day or so old before they are even packaged. The fresh muffin case is a joke. If you think those are fresh daily you are sadly mistaken. I was a witness on several occasions to bakers who were sick working with no gloves, blowing their nose on the floor, no hair nets, not washing their hands, nor using any sort of clean baking pans (how good do you think cookies taste on a pan u... I won't be shopping at Safeway any more. I was using their home delivery program because of the convenience it offered. My time is valuable and this would be one less thing for me to worry about. My last two orders have been short items that I was charged for. I was able to get credit for the items, but only after spending way too much time on the phone. This last delivery request was the topper. I scheduled delivery for between 7pm and 9pm. The delivery driver called me a 8:45pm and said he wouldn't be able to make my delivery until between 10:30pm and 11pm. Needless to say I canceled the order and will now be doing my shopping elsewhere.

I'm just tired of making sure they are respecting the "buy one get one free" offer. They totally charge you the "free" one, this is the third time !!! I am already an exhausted mother of three to return and tell them. Maybe the cashier is trying to be polite talking to you during the whole transaction, I cannot concentrated while they are marking the items. Drives me crazy !!! Here in San Mateo CA it's already expensive to deal with these "details" . No more !

I am disgusted with Safeway! Free with every Safeway brand coffee filter purchase: MAGGOTS!!!! A month ago my kitchen was raided with hundreds of maggots. It took us two days to figure out that they had come from Safeway coffee filters. I would have chucked it up to bad luck if it had not happened to me TWICE! The second time I caught the larva in the box before they were able to breed. It took another two days to find all the little suckers and bleach em out of my kitchen! On top of that, every other time I get bread from safeway, it is already moldy. I am sick of returning food and hearing lame excuses as to why there are bugs or mold in my product. I will never shop at another Safeway in my life!

Rancher Reserve is not what Safeway says it is. I cook my meat med-rare and it's tough to eat. Safesay says it's Angus meat and I don't question it. But it probably select cut not the choice cut that they used to do. That's why they change the name to Rancher Reserve, to fool the public. I have found another store that sell certified angus beef or natural certified angus beef which is much more tender than Safeways. Will not buy their meats again.

I've never been a big fan of Safeway, but I am going to give them 3 stars because they revamped the local market near where I work. It is in SE DC, which is an area that is often forgotten by companies because of its tradtionally lower class, black population. However, they have done a great job at that location by adding a Starbucks, sandwhich station, and an overall overhaul of their store. It is cleaner, nicer looking, and more pleasant to shop than what it was several years ago. If they continue with this trend in other stores, I am sure Safeway will improve its overall reputation.

I have been working for this company for about four years. It actually use to be a good company but they are becoming like everybody else. They use to pay there employees good and have great benefits. No more!! Oh and safeway has this thing where they want their employees to have world class customer service. But they over work there employees because they don't have enough employees to run the store because corporate is trying to save money by taking hours. Then they wonder why customer service is bad! Duh because there working the employees to the bone. Plus corporate whites shirts of this company are a buch of jerks. They show up in a safeway store every once in a while not to motivate the worker but to chew there butts out. This company has lost my respect.

The only experience that I had with Safeway was in the middle of Washington D.C., so this rating may not be descriptive of Safeway in general. The one that I went to was ridiculously small, with very little selection. It was dirty and overcrowded, and the prices were ridiculously high. The checkout line extended halfway to the back of the store. Even though this store was within walking distance of my apartment, I never went back and chose to do my shopping at a Harris Teeter that took me half an hour to get to on the Metro.

Safeway has higher prices than Giant or Food Lion, but I drive out of my way to shop there. Their selection is better, their produce is of higher quality, and their meat is great. Food Lion is less than 1 mile from my house. Safeway is about 10 miles from my house. It is that much better. I believe they have "secret shoppers," which would explain why they are always saying "hi." One thing they do that I don't like is thank you Mrs..... and use your last name when you check out. Most of the employees are friendly and willing to help. If there is a long line, all you have to do is ask a manager to have another register opened and they usually do. Even though generally their prices are higher, when they have things on sale, the prices are even better than Wal Mart. As long as they keep up the great customer service and keep the quality of their goods high, I will gladly pay a little more and go out of my way to shop there instead of any other grocery store.

Safeway is all about service not value, and low prices.Example:Oregon buy one get one free items, you choose one item only, you get it for half the cost, but not in California, you pay full price .So think of all the people that only get one item,Bingo;Safeway makes lots of money.Grocery outlets cater to different kinds of people, this indicates where they decide to build.Safeway likes middle class and elderly, service ,service ,service'

The good flip side is that its subsidary, Pak 'n Save gives better prices and you can use your card there.
