This was a rite of passage for me, I had just published my first book and decided to make a commitment for life and as Misha says "it's only forever, so make sure you like it." Misha was amazing, I brought her a concept and not only she realized it but took it to another level and I simply loved it. It was such a pleasure to spend hours with this woman, who made me laugh and made me completely comfortable. I love my tattoo. BTW I am in my 50s and this is my first tattoo.....

I am no novice to tattoos. I have about 20% of my body covered in beautiful pieces, all done by two artists that I trust very highly. Neither of them are in LA, and when my beloved cat of 21 years passed away on my wedding night I knew I needed to honor him with the most important tattoo of my life. The problem....where to find the perfect artist to properly honor my little one? Upon seeing the History Channel piece on tattoo history, I was impressed by the Zulu Tattoo shop and wanted to check it out more. I had already met with four other artists who I knew immediately were not right for me, and had perused countless artist books. I emailed Catherine and she responded right away with her suggestion for my particular needs. I made the consult appointment with Lantz as per her suggestion. The shop is beautiful,VERY clean, but warm, none of that "stark" feel. Catherine is lovely and helpful and Lantz was right on time for our appointment. Two minutes with him and I knew he was the ... I was visiting LA from Canada and while I was there I wanted to get a tattoo and one of the more "popular" tattoo shops that is on TV right now. I called and emailed them twice and never heard a response and boy and I glad. I started researching tattoo shops in LA and found Zulu. After reading many reviews on this site an others I was very impressed so I thought I would give it a try, and after my first expeience I wasn't expecting much. Boy was I wrong. Zulu had to be the most organized, professional and comfortable tattoo shop. I was very impressed with the quick response from Catherine for booking the tattoo (within 24 hours of my initial email). I had a very origianl idea and was worried if it would come out looking like I wanted to. I had selected Lance to do the tattoo based on Zulu's website and looking at his work. Lance was awesome. We did the consultation via email before I got to LA. To be honest when he sent me the original sample of the tattoo I was a little worried becaus... Read more

Zulu Tattoo is so much more than just a tattoo shop. It is truly a place that celebrates community and the connection that exists between every single one of us. From the moment I walked in, I was struck by the collective energy Zulu and his wife Khani were able to create and radiate outward, welcoming all walks of life in their sphere. I have spent many hours on the table, the result of which is an amazing back piece that reflects both a physical and spiritual manifestation of who and what I am. Zulu was able to channel and draw that out, both literally and figuratively, which is more than a testament to his mastered skill, incredible artistry and the depth of his spiritual being. The beauty of Zulu Tattoo is that every piece is given the same amount of attention and intuitiveness regardless of size, shape or color. Theirs is a family, a tribe, a communal consciousness that I feel tremendously grateful and lucky to have not only experienced but to forever be a part of.

I waited 10 years for my first tattoo and it was well worth the wait! Roni Zulu has completed all of the tattoos that I have (4 in all). Each one is special and has great meaning to me and anyone who knows me can look at them and see "me". I have a half sleeve that my husband designed and Roni took it up several notches :-) I receive lots of compliments on the shading work and when folks find out that the only outline is of the main piece while the remainder is shading they are amazed. I consider each tattoo that I have a piece of living art and my body happens to be the canvas. There are additions that I need to make to a couple of pieces as more spirit has come through each piece. Roni, I do need to make an appointment ;-) and thanks bunches!

So, this is my first time writing a review and I do so hesitantly as I am selfish! lol I've been contemplating getting my fourth tattoo for the past few years. It was really important for me to find someone to sketch the design I had in my mind that would honor loved ones. I looked around online and stumbled upon Zulu Tattoo. I looked at all the artists on the site and liked Mishas work the best (she does GREAT floral designs!) I emailed her with questions, which she promptly answered. I had 2 consultations before I actually started the tattoo. I have one more session to go but I am totally in love with my tattoo and I totally have a "Girl crush" on Misha, she is AMAZING! She specializes in darker skin so that made me feel much more comfortable that my design would be good (I've been told I couldn't get color on my tattoos bc I am a medium skin toned black female at other shops! ) I forget to get the Ointment that zulu sells and Khani was even kind enough to mail it to me free of... I finally got my first tattoo with Sameerah. She's awesome! Really friendly and really comforting artist. She's really cool as a person and was pretty flexible with my change in decisions. Her work is very professional. She does not rush u into getting your tattoo, but rather make sure that u decide on something u really like. The whole process made me feel that my tattoo is very valuable! The atmosphere is very spa-like. It's not like one of those "hardcore" tattoo shops that make u doubt its hygiene and quality. Although it is pricy, it is worth it because a tattoo is permanent. I'd definitely recommend Zulu tattoo.

After I moved to LA I search and searched for the right artist to take on a piece that I had drawn. I finally just went and had it done by a guy and I cannot even remember his name. I am very sensitive to energies of people and I found it very hard to be in a typical tattoo shop. Then I met Zulu, his wife and shortly there after, Lantz. I enjoyed their energy so much that I knew Zulu would be the right artist that would be able to bring to the surface my next tattoo! He is very insightful to this special piece! I loved that he said "this is gonna be bitchin"! And it still is!!! Zulu Tattoo has since grown and I've also branched out and had the pleasure of working with Lantz and Misha! The atmosphere is calming and very 'zen' like. The entire staff is very attentive and friendly! I find it very easy to go into a meditative state or chat with my artist while getting a tattoo because all of my needs are being met. They all work towards making sure the piece that I am getting... Honestly, this has to be the best most awesome place to get tatt'd in L.A., or anywhere else I've checked out. And the artists are professional and tuned in to your needs, as well as being remarkably talented. In a way, I hate to write such a glowing review cause then it will make it harder for me to schedule time with them. But they are AWESOME!!!

I live in Seattle where there are almost as many tattoo parlors as Starbucks'. And yet I return again and again to Zulu Tattoo to have work done by Lantz. Just last night customers at my restaurant pulled me over saying "I love how your ink moves and flows around your arms" and that is exactly what I'd told Lantz I wanted. Not only do they truly listen to what you want, but they deliver the goods. And great goods they are.

I just had a 5 hour piece done by Misha and it is amazing!! What i liked best about this place, aside from the friendly people and exceptional customer care and service, was the time they took to get to know you, plan, map and draw out your desired tattoo (by hand from scratch) and work with you to make sure your tattoo is absolutely perfect prior to getting it done in ink! People don't realize that a lot of people out there are very artistic and creative with thier personally inspired tat...you don't simiply walk into a shop and expect to get inked that day! It took me years to plan and draw out my tat exactly as i pictured it. Once i came into contact with Misha, which is THE BEST if you are looking for either japanese inspired art or animai, it took an additional 2 months to get my drawing perfect as far a the morphing, shading, 3-d, color, placement, etc. Once i sat down with Misha i knew she was the one. The tat session was amazing; easy, relaxing and most of all fun. Eve... Read more

When I decided to get full sleeves I knew that it would take a while to find the perfect artist to make my ideas a permanent part of me. I found Misha online and scheduled a consultation with her. I arrived at the shop and knew immediately that it was way different than any tattoo shop I'd ever been to (and I've been to quite a few!). The energy is relaxed and inviting, and everyone who works there is friendly and down to earth. FINALLY a shop without ego!!! When I showed Misha my reference material and shared with her my vision for the sleeve, she was so excited about it and I knew that I had found an incredible artist. My first sitting with Misha was so much fun! She took my ideas and created a piece that was so much better than I could have ever imagined! She was even able to keep me laughing throughout the entire 4 hours. I don't know how she did it, but she made me giggle uncontrollably while she was tattooing my elbow!!! Her work is amazing. I only have half of the out... Read more

I am extremely pleased with the work that Sameerah did for my tattoo. She created and improved my tattoo beyond my expectations. She has the personality, attitude, and pride of work to do work that is absolutely incredible. I was shocked at first at much difference she made but that was just the start. When she finished she created a masterpiece that I am so proud to display and brag to everyone. I let everyone who she is and what a quality person and artist she is. I will not have anyone else ever tattoo me!

Hands down! This is the ultimate in tattooing! My first Zulu piece was in '93...It is an experience for the mind, soul AND body. You don't have to be a celebrity to get exquisite work and stellar service. You will be receive a level of creativity that is unmatched in the industry. Zulu is surrounded by Awesome Artists' and the shop is a living, breathing organism. You can feel the energy and all of your senses will be pleasantly surprised. In addition, Zulu Tattoo believes in giving back. I proudly sport my Breast Cancer Ribbon on my ankle that I got at an event at Zulu Tattoo to support an organzation that assists in providing funds to patients who are in need of treament. Something I would've done any way, became a way to help someone else in the community. My Aunt and Sister, SURVIVORS, were very excited and proud. Treat yourself...it will be beyond anything you can envision.

I do not exaggerate when I tell you I cannot count the number of times people of all walks of life have come up to me and said those very words: "That is the best tattoo I have ever seen in my entire life!" As a heavily tattooed woman, when I decided on a sleeve design, I searched intensely for 4 years to find the right artist. One look at Lantz Huston?s work and I knew he was 100% the man for the job! People go crazy when they see my sleeves. I walk around with a huge stack of Lantz?s business cards because I cannot walk 100 yards without somebody stopping me to ask about my beautiful tattoos. Lantz is kind, patient, thoughtful and just an incredible artist and person. He will make you feel right at home and ensure that you get exactly the tattoo you want. He?ll even guide you with inspired ideas if you aren?t quite sure. As far as his technique goes?.it?s just unparalleled. It's an honor to wear ink by Zulu. The lineage of tattoo is ancient, tribal and spiritual. Zulu understands the heritage of tatau (original Samoan word for tattoo) and is a scholarly practitioner of the art. Very special people and space. Malama Pono!

My wife discovered Zulu 12 years ago after a long search for the right place for her first Tattoo. We were both equally impressed with the results and the Artist! We both are huge Zulu fans and have referred countless people to him over the years. Take a look at the work he and his fellow artists have done and you'll see why we go to Zulu exclusively. We have checked out several other shops over the years (even some you have seen on TV & got a totally bad vibe) and haven't found a more welcoming and creative ( And Clean!) atmosphere. The people make the difference! And that is what makes us return to Zulu again & again. If you are looking for your first or 500th piece I really recommend that you at least go in and check it out.

I feel so blessed to have come across Zulu Tattoo and Lantz for my first tattoo's! I sent him my design and told him what my vision was and why I was getting the tattoo's done. He was very respectful and understood the importance. His work is methodical combined with a light touch that resulted in beautiful meticulous lines. People are knocked down by his Sanskrit work on my arm's. My tattoo's really are special and are the perfect expression of Bhakti Yoga. Zulu's radiates very pure energy. Very low key, clean and professional. My appointments ran on time and were confirmed with email reminders and follow up phone calls.... with Catherine the Great running the front you are in good hands:) If you are looking to express your inner spiritual warrior in the form of tattoo... IF YOU DO NOT LIKE NEW NEEDLES USED FOR YOUR TATTOO: IF YOU DO NOT LIKE ORGANIC INKS: IF YOU DO NOT LIKE THE LACK OF CIGARETTE SMOKE: IF YOU DO NOT LIKE A PROFESSIONAL RUN SHOP: THEN ZULU IS NOT FOR YOU. I did a lot of home work on all the top Tattoo shops in the area and out of the area and Zulu was on the top of my list. When you walk into Zulu you feel the relaxing Zen that fills the shop. A few years ago I met a man named Lantz at a party and noticed the beautiful art on his arms. He told me about a new shop he was opening with a friend, called Zulu Tattoo. I put his card away in my wallet for a long time. I never knew I wanted a tattoo. As a painter, I have always loved the image of adorned skin. I do much of my creative work in my sleep and often dream the paintings I am going to create. I see myself working on them as I sleep. Around my 45th birthday, I began to see myself in a dream, running through trees with the most beautiful tattoo on my back. It was a facinating as I didn't have a tattoo. I had the same dream frequently and began to look closely at the tattoo. I would sketch it when I woke. This was the mark I was supposed to have. I remebered the card in my wallet and called Zulu for an appointment. Michael, my partner, had wanted a tattoo for a long time, so we went together. When we stepped into the lush, red rooms of Zulu Tattoo, we were transported. I... Read more

I went into Zulu a few years ago with the intention of getting one tattoo that I designed to represent part of my cultural background. The experience was so rewarding for so many reasons that I have now gone back three times and will return for a fourth. The artists are beyond top notch. They make you feel comfortable and allow you to create your own designs so the ink you get is still "yours" and not their interpretation. By far the best place in LA and among the best in the country

I had a lot of ideas about what I wanted my next tatoo to be. I had seen Zulu Tatoo driving up/down Crescent Heights and found their window display really intriguing. So I called and left a message. Khani called me the same day and we made an appointment for me with Lantz. Lantz took my scraps of paper and half formed ideas and before I even got home had emailed me a design to think about. It really is the most awesome of my tats and I can't wait to go back and work on the next one!

I looked a very long time for a tattoo artist whose passion for their art went deeper than the material. After my first consultation with Zulu I knew I'd found that artist. There is a vibe in the Zulu tattoo studio that draws you in and makes you want to stay. Everyone there is very passionate about their work and you can see it in how they treat their clients. Zulu was genuinely excited about the idea I had for my tattoo and took the drawing and color to the next level. I trusted his judgment completely. I have several friends who are planning on flying into the country just to see Zulu. If you have an opportunity to meet Zulu I would say don't miss it.

He also has the best curly lines and circles I've ever seen..the man's a Genius and he's my HOMIE! Peace Zulu you deserve this and many more..I'll be in soon for the next one....

I first came to Zulu to have a cover-up done and little did I know I would be leaving with much more than a beautiful marking..... I left with lasting friendships. Not only do I have an incredible artist, I have gained a beautiful friend. The studio design is amazing, its immaculate, yet very comfortable and serene. Getting your sacred mark from anyone at Zulu Tattoo is not only a privilege, it is truly an amazing experience. I have recently moved out of state, but all of the darling people I have had the absolute pleasure of meeting here at Zulu Tattoo, you better believe I will travel to do it all again...and again. Misha was my chosen artist. I wanted to do a memorial piece. Not your everyday memorial piece though, this one was to commemorate a little sea lion named Brodi. I told Misha what I was looking for and she came up with a beautiful tattoo that consisted of a portrait of him on a California Reef. Little Brodi died before he ever got to go in the ocean or eat his first fish, but because of Misha's beautiful work, he will always be in the ocean where he belongs. I have an awesome piece of art on my back that I will always treasure. It brings tears to the eyes of all the people who's lives were touched by this delightful sea lion. Misha's work went way beyond my expectations. I'm planning on a few more marine mammal tattoos and I wouldn't consider anyone else for the job. She is awesome!

Then go see Zulu. The man is amazing...as an artist and as a person. He takes good care of his customers and unlike most tattoo artists, he can draw exceptionally well. Zulu also doesn't have a heavy hand when he works on you and the vibe in there puts you at ease so that you can relax and enjoy the experience. There are a ton of lousy tattoo shops in LA, and this is not one of them...He's real and so is his work... I highly recommend Zulu to anyone who is serious about putting something on their body that will last a lifetime. Zulu is like the modern day medicine man, guiding his customers to find the inner union between the vessel which is their body and the emotions, experiences and passions, which will eventually join to become their tattoo!

Zulu is the man...I had an amazing experience. From the look and feel of the shop (not the dingy, shady feel of the typical parlor, its vibrant colors and world art give it a very positive vibe) to the attention and consultation you receive from the artists (Zulu spent 30 - 45 minutes talking with me about my design and how he thought it would be best illustrated). Khani was awesome, working around my schedule and Zulu's to get me in for the multiple sessions. I would strongly recommend Zulu Tattoo to anyone who wants a true artist to lay down their sacred mark. PEACE! P.S. If you want a Mickey tattoo or Tweety Bird on your back, go elsewhere - every single artist in this shop is a legitimate artist.

I went to Zulu Tattoo for my first bit of ink. Actually, it was a lot of ink because I figured if you're gonna get a tattoo, get a tattoo. I got a beautiful piece done on my forearm by King Afa Cocker, a specialist in Polynesian tattoos. When I first met with Afa, he listened patiently to my ideas then worked with me to develop something that was unique and powerful. I did the tattoo for me, but I get stopped at least once a day by someone who wants to ask about my tattoo. I always tell them where to go too - Straight to Zulu!

I have five tats and got my most recent one from Zulu at Zulu Tattoo. I'd wanted Zulu to ink me for quite sometime but waited until I had the right concept to warrant his work (and the long wait). Getting inked at Zulu is a total spiritual experience and well worth the time (now he has a two year wait, I waited six months). His work is amazing, his shop is flawless and his employees also share his philosophy of simply helping you find the design within yourself. Great experience and I plan on going again for my next tat.

It?s so rare to have someone truly exceed your expectations ? especially something you?ve visualized in your mind for years - and then see it brought to life before your eyes even better than you had imagine it. That?s what I experienced at Zulu. While it?s tough to quantify a vibe, they have found a way of bringing a wealth of knowledge, artistry and passion together to create an environment where each person?s journey can be told and celebrated. There?s no cookie cutter program here. No blinking lights, neon, or ?open-all-night? at Zulu. They are passionate, talented artists who just want to help you channel your message. My artist, Sameerah, is amazingly talented and passionate about her art. It was easy for me to trust her with my work. Because of the shop?s reputation, she had aspired to someday work at Zulu, and now she says she?s living her dream by actually being here. I couldn't have picked a better shop and the artist Sameerah exceeded all my expectations. In fact, her representation on the phoenix I went in for, inspired me to add on even more. Now she and I are in the process of doing (almost) a full sleeve and my hubby and I will be getting our 4 year anniversary tattoo there too. It's a little pricey however it's worth it! Ink quality is great, healing process is quick, the tattoo ointment they sell in the shop smells awesome (not to mention nourishing to your tattoo), and the people are truly like a family. Hands down, the best experience I've had getting inked.

Ok, so where does someone who is a virgin to the land of ink and not feel intimidated to to get his/her first tattoo? Zulu Tattoo. The atmosphere is quite like nothing that I would expect from a tattoo place. The staff is wonderful, friendly and inviting. I felt very much at home and welcomed. Sameerah, my tattoo artist, greeted me with the warmest smile and immediately started to ask me questions to get a feel for what I wanted in my mark. I was blown away by the sketches that she sent me via email and was so excited to start the process. Once there, I felt very taken care by her and the staff of Zulu Tattoo. I love my tattoo and the only side effect that I have had is the burning desire to get another one in the near future. Zulu Tattoo is the best for anyone that has been thinking of getting a tattoo but has been too intimidated into going through with it. I left there truly feeling that I have been "Welcomed into the Tribe". Thank you Sameerah and thank you Zulu Tatttoo!

Let me be perfectly clear: Zulu Tattoo is one of the best tattoo studios in the United States, if not the world. I say this based on many years of study about tattooing, permanent marks and their role in society. There is no place I trust more than Zulu and his incredibly thoughtful, creative, and soulful tribe of artists. I've received three tattoos from the amazing Zulu himself, and have known him for more than a decade. His custom artwork is unparalleled, as is his line work and tribal designs. My tattoos happen to all be extensively in color and their radiance many years later is still as strong as on the day I received them. Zulu has an incredible knowledge of cultures, faiths and symbols from around the world, and he uses this knowledge with his outstanding skill to realize anyone's vision onto the skin. You don't come to Zulu to pick a piece off the wall (there are none). You come for a one-of-a-kind creation that matches your heart and soul. Recently I also received a ... Read more
