Richard the bartender was great - explained the different sake selections in detail, and even gave me a taste of some of the unfiltered sake which was great. The fish was fresh, which really defines the difference between good sashimi and bad sashimi. Overall a great experience for a single businessman's night out on the town.

I go out to sushi about once a week (wish it could be more) and it's such a bummer that the sushi place that's in my neighborhood is so overpriced and comes with aloof service. We've had a few good experiences here and the sushi is really pretty good but you better order everything you want when your server is at your table because they'll never be back. You have to flag someone down if you need something else - including the check. The portions are small (overpriced) but quite tasty and creative. The happy hour specials are ok and are a better price. They also do this weird thing where they hold pretty much all of their tables for reservations. We've come, eaten and left while 5 tables sit empty with a "reserved" sign on them. This is, of course, more frustrating when you arrive without a reservation only to be told there will be an hour wait whie many tables sit empty.

Atmosphere of Tsunami was very nice and modern looking unlike typical Sushi place. My wife and I was looking forward to their Sushi, since the owner was Japanese. After reading high reviews from CitySearch, my expectation was very high. However, we were very disappointed when we saw the rolls served on our plate, and our instinct was damn right about how it was going to taste. Sushi here must be made by some kind of Amateur...only some Caucasian people who doesn't know real Sushi would give 5 star for this 1 star sushi. (No wonder we were the only Asian customer!) I should have realized that CitySearch in San Francisco must have been rated mostly by non-Asian people!! I lived in Japan for 14 years, and I know what real sushi taste like. Never go there expecting authentic Japanese sushi. Oh and also, i would never order Plum wine there. They use cheap Plum wine which taste like cough syrup, we had whole bottle for ourselves but couldn't finish them (only had a glass...so awful). Good th... Read more

The sushi was really fresh and really good (for the little that we had). The presentation was equally as pleasing. Unfortunately for this place, I have no tolerance for poor service. We had reservations and were seated immediately. It took a half hour for our drinks to arrive. We ordered an appetizer and the first of our main courses. They arrived at the same time(?) and by that time our drinks were empty. Our server didn't check on us for another half hour and it was not busy. She was horrible! Maybe her cat died earlier in the day?? By the time we finally got her attention we had to ask for the check and get out of there before our heads exploded. Too trendy for my taste as well. I don't recommend this place.

The Scene The hipster '70s vibe features dim lighting, mellow house music and cute stocking-capped sushi chefs behind a small bar in the corner. A low banquette along one wall anchors a small lounge area. It's like the "Brady Bunch" living room--wood paneling and angular furniture--relocated. The Food Unusual specials are highlighted, such as tiny, whole, flash-fried crabs, an extremely crunchy yet delicately flavored treat. Nigiri and sashimi standards are perfectly textured, absolutely fresh and clean-tasting. Rolls exceed expectations. The Scorpion's drizzle of typical sweet, dark unagi sauce achieves an atypical richness, and the Volcano accents spicy tuna with wasabi tobiko. Watch out for rolls and appetizers that include mayo or aioli--definitely an acquired taste. Servers are very hip and very informative. The chefs have got presentation down: ahi poke, for example, is splendid in a martini glass, with a spicy sauce that gives off a pleasant heat.

First I would like to ask where can you eat decent sushi for less than $40 or $50 a person. This is what a person would spend at Tsunami or the like of Tsunami spots in the city. Expensive if your hang out are WEBE sushi for example. I love this place for it all Japanese young chefs, wild sake selection that seems the largest I ever seen 7 now a retail sake shop right next door. The food is amazing it be the super fresh sachimi or wild rolld like the papa san that I have been ordering it there for over two years now. This is the spot for food, drinks, party and I'm proud to say I'm a regular even though I keep checking new spots that open but I keep going back.

Tsunami is a great place, maybe not for everyone, but I know Japanese food and they do too, Chef Adashi buys fresh fish daily and cares about the quality very much, yes it is pricey and if you want a cheap California roll and some crappy hot sake look somewhere else! Tip the chefs a beer and you can't go wrong!

Staff was unprofessional, the manager or someone who I thought was one was extremely rude. The sushi sampler was too expensive for four types of fish and two small slices each at $25. My friends and I had two samplers - three small one ounce shots which cost $16 each. Our tab for a sushi sampler, two sake samplers was $60. The sushi came with some greens stuffed into a small shot glass and didnt even have any dressing. Our waitress came twice to check if we were okay - to actually check if we needed to order more food. When we said we were pacing ourselves - we just came from dinner. She came back with our check without us asking for it. The music? - Rock and Alternative music- it didnt quiet go along with the Japanese decor. Oh and for that manager, my friend noticed that the area where she was sitting was wet- yes water under the table. She came to wipe the floor herself but how she said "its okay now" was so patronizing and condescending that we should have taken it as a sign. We ... Read more

anyone who says tsunami has bad service must have outrageous expectations or be too old for this restaraunt. we usually sit at the sushi bar and talk it up with Adachi or Thomas (coolest sushi chefs ever!) and enjoy 1/2 off hand rolls and sake. Every person I have brought to Tsunami has said this was the best sushi they have ever eaten, and I have the same feeling every time I go there (about once a week). Thier fish is fresh, crab is delicious, and specials are awesome. Tsunami definitely is not a one star place, and the proof is in the jam-packed restaraunt every night.

Sushi is not so good and not worth the money. Service is poor on average and the best you can expect is one glass of water. Staff is likely to encourage you to pay the bill and leave quickly so they can refill your table. Be careful what you order as much of the sushi is low end and not ideal for anyone who truly enjoys sushi. Overall it would be a better choice for the sushi lover to avoid this establishment.

If I could give a zero stars rating I would do it. The wait staff at this restaruant is totally unprofessional and appears to be drunk and high. Get a clue and stay away from this terrible place!! There are too many other good restaurants in San Francisco to waste your time here.

I went to Tsunami for the first time tonight and was very pleased with my experience. Firstly, and most importantly, the sushi was incredible. The sashimi was fresh and had great texture; the rolls were large and delicious (spider roll and the mama san). Although I do agree with many of the reviews about the inattentive waitstaff, I must say that the absolute opposite was true of the sushi chefs. We sat at the sushi bar and had a wonderful experience being waited on by the sushi chefs, who were friendly, attentive, and very knowledgeable. The icing on the cake was the fun and trendy atmosphere, which I felt was not pretentious as I had heard.

I always enjoy reading Zagat before going to places to eat. On this one Zagat underrated them but were close. Fish is amazingly super fresh with very pretty presentations... Sachimi is out of this world. I was there Wed when they offered a selection of fish I never heard off that was flown to them from Japan .. Very good. Design is very nice but I have to dissagree with one of the reviews saying all energy went there.. I'm a designer.. this place is done very tastefully but does not seem to have cost too much.. I will not take away from it.. great feel.. Service was very good. My server explained sake bottles to me and helped me pick one.

From all the amazing reviews, I thought this would be the best sushi in the city. Wrong, wrong, wrong. I went last night w a friend. It's trendy, I guess, and they def squeeze as many tables in there as possible. The service was s-l-o-w and our waitress in particular kind of hung around the table waiting for us to order more food even when we'd say 'so, I think that's all for now'. Odd. The fish is fresh, I'll give them that, but the rolls are totally small for the price and I highly recommend staying away from their Hawaiian Pokki Salad. Hawaiian Pokki is DICED tuna; this tuna has been pounded to the point where it looks like a sheet of mica. You can barely even see it given the super dark atmosphere and the fact that it's so thin. It ends up being warm - less density = gets warmer quicker - which doesn't help w it settling all that well. Overall, if you're looking for a marina-esque sushi place in the western addition - this is your place. If you want an amazing sushi expe... Read more

NOT IMPRESSED @ ALL. DEFINATELY FELT LIKE AN OUTSIDER IN THIS HIPSTER HAVEN. SUSHI IS PAR @ BEST, AND THE STAFF SEEMED TO BE WAY MORE INTERESTED IN THE INDIE ROCK BAND PLAYING LATER THAT NIGHT THAN THE MEAL I WAS ORDERING. I FREQUENT MANY SUSHI RESTAURANTS IN THE CITY THAT HAVE A GOOD BUZZ ABOUT THEM, BUT THIS ONE WAS WAY OVERRATED. LOWER YOUR PRICES, AND LEARN TO APPRECIATE YOUR CUSTOMERS. SERVICE IS WHAT ATTRACTS SOMEONE TO A RESTAURANT AND THE FOOD IS WHAT KEEPS THEM COMING BACK. AT THIS POINT THE FOOD IS DECENT, WHICH MEANS TSUNAMI HAS SOME WORK TO DO.

I have been here two times and I was struck by how relaxed the setting is it be sitting at the bar or lounge area although the lounge felt a bit tight at least the table we got. the place has a great energy about it with very cute servers who realy knew their product and very fun cute chefs working the bar. We had sake bottle on both visits and both times the recommendation was excellent with way cheaper prices than I had at ozumo for example and much better list. Tsunami only draw back is that there is no parking which caused us to be late both times. hostess first time was better then the second time which was on Wed & they were very busy & maybe thats why... Anyhows, I recoomend you order sake' with your food, get sachimi "chefs choice' oh my god, sushi made in heavon.

First of all, no qualms with the sushi. It was very tasty and fresh. The problem is that there are probably a dozen other sushi places with as good or better fish. In this competitive market, it is imperative for waitstaff to make each and every customer feel comfortable and wanted. I left tsunami feeling that I was neither welcomed nor wanted. I should elaborate, it wasn't that I was affirmatively mistreated, just that I felt like a leper. It seemed that the waitstaff was more concerned with themselves than with serving me. It was like being served by the "cool kid" in high-school who hasn't the time nor energy to acknowledge your presence. So next time, I'm going to Koo or Sushi Bistro or Sushi Groove or Kabuto . . . .

My wife and I have eaten at many sushi restaurants in the city. We have our favorites, but we also like to branch out and try new ones. Last night we took a friend to Tsunami and I was really dissapointed. I can't believe this place got a rating of 9.8! The portions are very small, the prices are WAY above average. Most of the sushi was just OK. Some sushi was really good, and one was really bad. The Ikura I ordered was showing signs of age - they eggs loose there firmness and start to get a "slimy" texture. The music volume was WAY to high to have a conversation. Why was this spot marked as "romantic"? It must be because of the low cushion seating at one side which they try to push on you. Yes, they were cute, but I really just prefer tables. The plus side is they have some really unusal offerings and the Sake list is huge. If you want to eat in a loud club-like setting with cutsie ambiance, this could be fun (but expensive). But if you're going out for the food and co... Read more

This place is gourgous in design and seems to offer the best sushi in the city. Fish is super fresh with emphasis on presentation. The chefs wear funky street clothes and they are all young and act very fun behind sushi bar. Now the killer in this place is the sake list that I dont think exists anywhere in this city .. we sampled couple of diffrent sakes then got a nice Junmai sake bottle that was excellent. All in all, this place is great but for those who are on "budgets" probably not the best spot for them.. it is not super expensive but not cheap either..

Cocktails are tasty, get in for happy hour if you can. Rolls are crazy expensive and small portioned. Menu is also pretty limited. Fish is fine, but not spectacular, and esp for the price. Service is friendly, middle tables are a bit cramped and close to one another. Total was $120 for two people incl 2 drinks each (one at happy hour) and we definitely WERE NOT full.

This is so like izakaya eateries in Japan where you drink & eat a lot but the only diffrance you have an all exclusive menu of sushi. The product served is very fresh and presentation seemed to be highly emphasized. service is remarkable with the servers beinf not only cute but friendly with such a large sake list makes this place the one sushi joint to eat at. Ohh I must say I dont agree with the reviw before mine.. they have no idea & my review was based on 2 visits

Tsunami advertises itself as a sushi and sake bar, but in reality, it's a sake bar with sushi as an afterthought. The sushi selection is slim, unexciting, and expensive. The servers are unattentive, snobby, and incompetent. We were there on an uncrowded Tuesday night, but from the harried waiters, you would've thought it was Friday and the place was full. We wanted to sit at a table, but despite the fact that several were available, we were sat on the uncofortable, low benches. We didn't get our miso soups until after the sushi, a waitress dropped a roll nearly in my lap, we got the wrong drink, and we had to ask 3 different people before we got our check. Through the whole visit, it was unclear who our waitress actually was, since several different people came over, none of whom really knew what was going on. In short, bad experience for way too much money.

We went there after our friends been talking about this place for months... I feel bad we have not gone there before ! Although some reviews noted they were expensive I thought $108 for 2 was simply avearge unless we were planning to eat at WeBe sushi. The atmosphere is retro with its dim lights and loud music and high energy place. I must say it felt more of a drinking place with food than food with drinking, but thats what made our experince remarkable. The sushi was extremly fresh with extra friendly service. sake' list I belive is the biggest in the city... this place rocks... Ill be back soon

If you go you must order the sashimi platter. The fish is really fresh served on a platter that looks like an underwater jungle, except the fish can't swim. The place is swanky & very hip with an amzing sake' list and excellent service. Music is often times pumping loud but very fun, with very hip stylish dressed staff and equal look from the customers. Oh, also you should order the papasan and hamchi shitake'

Intresting place, the fish was excellent bith in the sushi department 'nigiri & rolls which seems is what they specilize in. We sat at the sushi bar and the chefs were funny, ecentric and goofy but very fun and good. I cant belive the volume this place makes in terms of sushi. I would like to go again, food was good, service good, atmosphere great. I opted for beer but was told I should have tried their sake' being supposedly the best in the country !

You always hear about Tsunami and always hear how good it is so we decided upong arriving from LA last week to hit Tsunami as our first night spotfor the days we were here. The food is amazing, the fish is very fresh with remarkable rolls like the papasan which I died for. Even simple one like california roll was extremly fresh and tasty. Sake list has to be the biggest in the US and our guy at the bar was remarkable with his recommendations. All in all this trip was excellent and next time in town we are in Tsunami

This place is admittedly very cute and trendy. When we were first seated I was very hopeful. The sushi is AWFUL though. It's as if they found the fish on the street and served it. At $100+ for 2 people, I do NOT recommend this place to anyone. There are tons of cute sushi places in SF. This place was wretched.

I can't get enough of this place. For a while I was there almost once a week. The happy hour is very reasonable. The soju cocktails are great! The eel hand rolls are the best I've ever had. My boyfriend and I have tried other places in the city like Sushi-A-Go-Go, and we decided we like the sushi at Tsunami more than any other sushi that we have tried. Also, the miso soup is the best I have ever had and the edamame is always perfect. I took my vegetarian friend here and she loved the vegitarian rolls that she got, and she is not a big sushi fan.

The food at Tsunami is fine, some of it even good. But certainly disappointing based on my expectations. I could have lived with the food had it not been for a particularly snooty and inattentive wait staff. I'm not sure why they had so much attitude, but the food isn't special enough to merit it. The food took 2 hours to come out, which would have been ok if it were fantastic food.

My girlfriend and I ate there on April 8th, 2006. We arrived for their advertised happy hour between 6-7. We sat at the bar. The bartender acted is if we were a bother. She was vague about which items where on the happy hour. It was a struggle to get her to be explicit. My girlfriend made the mistake of asking and purchasing the bartender's food and sake recommendation. The happy hour bill ended up being $100 for two. The sushi was average the service was poor. I won't be going back.

Okay, so I just joined CitySearch specifically to respond to "bemymuse's" ridiculous and totally off-base review. She claims the service was bad, the food was mediocre and the waitress was "plain & dowdy." I mean, come on! Who says something like that when they're reviewing a restaurant? Anyway, just wanted to add my 2-cents, because I've been going to Tsunami since it opened and I have never had a bad experience there. The service is always great, the atmosphere is fun and the food is amazing. Definitely have the sashimi, if you're into that kind of thing. I highly recommend this place, but be prepared for a long wait on weekend nights. PS: The waitresses are usually hot- probably why bemymuse had issues with them.

Reading the review before mine I was surprised to note that tsunami was desribed as unauthentic... I think most people here, like the reviewer before me have no idea what authentic Japanese food is ... authentic is not california roll ! I lived in Japan and close to 90% of sushi restaurants in the US are not authentic. Tsunami 'I think' prides itself about its fusion style and the times I have been there they described their food as new world sushi.. Not being authentic is not an insult !Getting a class 101 about sachimi by staff, I would think is called service. Serving bottled water when asked for water, I assume is thinking a customer is classy & someone can always say 'I don't want it !! I love Tsunami, the food is fresh, Sevice is excellent , JoJo, Seanna, Shoshana.. we love you guys ...

My boyfriend lives in the neighborhood, one night we had a sushi craving it was late to go to Japantown so we asked his roomate about nearby Tsunami and she warned us it was overpriced. While strolling down Fulton we walked past Tsunami and my boyfriend suggested we go in, I trust his opinion because everyplace he has ever taken me has been hip & good... we sat @ the bar, I asked the bartender for water and she proceeded to serve me an industrial size bottle of Perrie that I didn't eve wan't, the menu was bad, I asked the server how the Sashimi is and she brought it upon herself to give me a lesson in sashmi 101, after this I was turned off! Not only was she plain & dowdy she was rude. Our dinner was tiny and nothing special, I've had fresher!

This is probably the best priced happy hour cocktails I ever tried in the city... Only $2 a drink when it is usually $6, added to that discounted sushi that is probably some of the best in the city... This place is extremly trendy and always alive with the best music and the hippest customers & sexiest girls Ive ever seen work. Reading the review before mine made me surprised a bit. It stated service was horrible yet friendly ! food is good but there are better thus it was horrible ...How could that be !! My experince like many times before was excellent. Although I could be counted as a regular thus they know me, I still think service over all is perfect. I was recived with smiles, explanation of specials and constsnt check ups on me & my boyfriend. Food cannot be described as average.. it is truly one of the best freshest fishes in the city.. yes it is pricy on some things but unless you are used to WeBe Sushi you cant pay any less for service, ambiance & quality food like this. I recommnd this place all the time. thank you my neighborhood boys & girls...

I was sorely disappointed with my experience here. The service was awful. Our waitress was friendly enough when she actually appeared at our table and the food didn't make up for much. Presentation is obviously a focus, but there are numerous better rolls and sashimi in this city. The sake menu was impressive, but the entire experience was horribly overpriced. Maybe it was just an off night, but i'm not racing to return anytime soon.

I Love this place. i have been there close to 10 times and consistancy is thier top mark. Atmopshere is remarkable. This place is an ongoing party all the time. Service has always been good, I wonder where they get these servers. I heard that they are the biggest sake' place on the west coast & come to think about it, Im not surprised. the waitresses has so much knowedge about sake' and alawys recommended something out of 80 or something i told they had. I must admiot though, that at times they get very busy that it slows things down from the bar side & the sushi side... I accept that because my alternative is to go to a none busy place & then Ill complain it is not happening ??

The sushi is great, the look of the place is great, but the service is consistently slow; often messes up the order (it's happened to me more than once); and isn't friendly. It's embarassing, really; and while I've come here more than once for the spider rolls the truth is there are other spider rolls out there that are just as good. Places with attentive service that isn't too hip to be working that day - or at least not working particularly hard.

I cant belive I did not know about this place untill this past saturady. What a surprise !! This place is a club, bar, lounge & resturant all in one but not realy.. it is actually a small lounge resturant but with the feel of all I noted above. I tried their sachimi dish and it was magnificant... we obviusly had lots of sake' like all people around us seemed to be doing. We stayed at our table longer than I think we were expected, but we made it up for them by drinking 2 large 1.8 Lt sake bottles. Service has to be one of their best strengths... every body works there seems to love it and they smile all the time. This was an all niter out for us & oh yaa they took our email to invite us to their new whisky lounge ..cant wait..

I went with a few friends for the first time over the weekend. It was quite busy and noisy, but the place was great. It's tiny, but has a a sensous intimate atmosphere. It is best to go for late night dining. This provides less noise and a much better experience. The music selection was great, with selected tracks such as Gotan Project. That always makes for a terrific milieu. Knowledeable staff, and absolutely amazing food and sushi. The best sushi I have had in this city yet.

Busy, Very busy yet under control. We went there on Wednesday and were surprised to be told that our table would be in 30 minutes but the wait was worth it. we had a drink around the corner at their sister bar Bar 821' great lounge'. Tsunami surpassed our expectations. We tried their sachimi combo which was excellent. The fish was super fresh & presented like an arat piece. service was magificant with a great recomendation for an excellent bottle of sake that we enjoyed through out the evening. this place is unique and one of its kind and it seems to work.. thank you.. we will come back again
