He has been called everything from a blowhard to a hero, a crook to a great law man. The vast majority of historians and biographers agree that the truth about Wyatt Earp plants itself firmly between the extremes. One thing is certain however, he cleaned up Dodge City, Kansas- one of the most dangerous "cow towns" in the entire American west.1

This man got to create his own legend, largely by outliving his contemporaries and hooking up with some Hollywood celebrities and screenwriters.

Most of his recollections and memoirs are lies, and not substantiated by the newspapers of the time, or simply happened to someone else.

His brother Virgil was the real Frontier Marshall, and the legendary Gunfight at the OK Corral was more a settling of scores between rival gangsters than it was law enforcement.		4

Wyatt was a shameless self-promoter who in his later years supposedly hung around hollywood begging people to make a movie of his life... maybe he wasn't all that and a bag of chips, but without him we wouldn't have had a whole genre of movies and a lot of our western folklore.0
