I think only those who have experienced combat can comment on this intelligently; but I will offer this: laying down one's life for the freedom and liberty of others is the stuff of true nobility.

At the moment, my country can screw off. It's done absolutely nothing for me, aside making me put up with the government's constant failings and the boorishness of the people, but if I truly believed in the cause my country was fighting for, then I may accept this as my death ride.

Me, my brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, my country men, and every young fellow. We are going to war. Fight firecefully, kill the enemy. The survivors will remain to carry our nations name. But provide that enemity, insults and arrogance of the enemy is put to an end. Or, set foot on the enemy soil, and show him the worst nightmare. Really there is a reason that forces someone to fight, and forget the life.

In Response;I have lost friends to war and wish only to offer my point of view.Men, when they die on the battlefield are scared. When the shock of their last few moments sets in they are naturally frightened... But to say "Shorn of dignity/ A waste / Pointless." is B.S.If you lay your boot-prints on the ground in the name of your country, in pursuit of your enemy, then you like many others come before you, are a strong man in your decision to do so.If you are not afraid to fight when YOU FEEL that it's time to fight then be proud. If you die crying out on the battlefield the only men that will hear you will be men like you, you are not subject to the scrutiny of those that where not there. When a soldier dies in his uniform however he goes, know this...He has already decided that his fate will be as susceptible to an early death just like every other soldier out there. He put his life into a pool with others and has agreed that he is no different, not special... That is an unselfish act and the dignity of that act will never be "shorn” of anything. Some choose to fight some do not. We don't want a sole nation of fighters and we don't want a nation of pacifists either, but remember people we are still in this together!I myself have a sworn enemy and in my time I feel that I need to seek out and destroy him. My country has enlisted me to pursue this campaign so I do. I can understand why people think it is "Wasteful" and "Pointless", but this is the way of the WORLD I live in. The rifle and the soldier are still the primary tools for holding ground, and basing negotiations. Perhaps tomorrow it will not be that way. However in the WORLD today, it is.Tomorrow perhaps my other countrymen that want to end war altogether will GLOBALLY succeed. When they do I will be proud of their success. I see it's valor- But today you can't effectively enable any measurable overseas change with your words. The foreign populations simply don’t care about words! So then I'll do it the way the rest of the world does, with a rifle and a soldier... Simply killing isn't what I'm looking for, I and my piers don't seek war for the sake of violence. Violence is just a tool sometimes we use it sometimes we don't! We seek to effect a change in the world as well. We just do it physically. For me it's an enemy that I been hunting since 2001. I will never want to stop hunting him until his threat is gone. I'd choose to do it from the mountainside you’d choose to do it from the desktop perhaps someday we'll meet in the middle someday, but we’ll both still be on the same side.If I die in the act- then my fate will be no different than the one who passed before me... Such is life for the soldier I accept this so I can serve my chosen cause in my chosen way. Yes I choose to kill the enemy. To go where he lives and hunt him to his death. He has earned this attention and unless some men go he will bring more death here to us. I realize that this simplification of mortality may cause some to sympathize and pity my enemy, and if this pity becomes too strong perhaps you should go live with my enemy and hopefully I’ll see you from the mountainside and I’ll kill you in the name of my country. If however you just simply feel different, as an American citizen, then I applaud your individualism. This is OUR COUNTRY and we all share in its fate. It will take fighters and peacemakers, schoolteachers and businessmen for it to be successful. No it’s not a utopia but I know what I am within this Modern American Civilization, who are you?Have respect for the diversity of thought and disposition in other men. Think before you speak in public!

WASTE!

Despite what movies and popular fiction will tell you, and despite occasional noble and heroic deaths, most people who die in combat suffer frightening, miserable deaths, shorn of dignity. A medieval battlefield was a ghastly charnal house. A modern one is all that with the dehumanizing element of an efficient slaughterhouse thrown in.

Noble, Patriotic. Honorable, even.
