Eschew, you are so right. It is a privelage to live in a country where this is possible.

Go to Iraq, or Afghanistan, or the Sudan and tell me again that the education ALL Americans are provided and entitled to, is not a luxury. We all share this wonderful luxury though we seldom appreciate how great a gift it is.

If you count education as having access to public schools, trade schools and universities (since knowledge passed down from generation to generation could also be considered education; In this discussion, I'll refer to education as public schools, trade schools and universities), then yes, it is a luxury that many parts of the world do not have. I'm sure third-world countries would look upon our (American) public schools, in classrooms with books for every child, to indeed be a luxury. If you live day by day in fears of being shot or worrying if you can find enough to eat just to make it through the day, I'm sure the thought of being able to not have to worry about those things and sit through a class is indeed a luxury. As an American, I feel fortunate that I was given an education and given the opportunity to extend my education through college; not everyone around the world could say the same.

Education is a human right, not a luxury, how can one judge someone less intelligent than them if they don't even give them the opportunity to learn?

It is sometimes necessary to earn knowledge. Anything worth knowing is rarely given away.

Food, clothing, and shelter are the only requirements to sustain your life. Everything else is a luxury. And education is a luxury that most people in this world don't get to enjoy. But like everything else, Americans take it for granted.

Education should be a given, not a luxury.
