If it's breakfast time and you're looking to quench a need for a sandwich, roll down to the newly reopened Dougboys (8136 W. Third Street) for their deliciously satisfying breakfast sandwiches. Bacon, fried eggs, tomatoes, cheese and even more cheese (there can never be enough) make these sandwiches just the thing you'll need after a night out.

This beloved West Third Street brunch favorite re-opened in early 2010 with a series of free meals for area residents and twitter-savvy Angelenos. Although the new space is slightly smaller (around 1300 square feet with just under 70 total seats indoors and outdoors), the menu remains exactly the same. Expect Doughboys standbys such as "the monster" (a massive grilled foccacia topped with melted Swiss cheese, roast beef, mushrooms and onions) and their 4-egg frittata to keep the crowds flocking to this casual eatery into 2011 and beyond. And of course, no one leaves here without being tempted to try some of Doughboys' well-known baked goods (the red devil cake is famous here).

I would note that 3 of the 4 awful reviews below, on the main page, appear to be from individuals that haven't reviewed anything else -- suggesting that they might not be real persons. Considering all the turmoil that the restaurant went through (according to the owner, yes, but it sounds fairly legit, albeit a little dramatic, and has been confirmed by former employees) I would venture to guess that some of the neighbors and others who caused this drama used user review sites like this one to add to Doughboy's downfall. As a huge fan that misses Doughboy's dearly, I just wanted to point this out so as to prevent the good Doughboy's name from ever being tarnished more than it deserved. You can have your opinion that it was overrated (I'd disagree) or pine about the wait (agreed) but there's no proof or even suggestion that it was teeming with vermin, aside from a single post. The original location was probably the best but I'd be hesitant to believe all you read on here... We Miss Yo... Read more

NOW ON HIGHLAND - Besides the dry meat, hard bread, flavorless soup and horrible service I was attacked by hundreds of black flies!! If your hungry try roadkill, it's probably better since I would not have to wait an hour for a waiter to bring it to me.

Bad food, bad, service, bad experience overall. I used to think this place was good when it was in the old location. I think the staff must hate the owner, and it shows. This place was dirty and out of almost everything on the menu. What was left over, was flavorless and stale. I will never return. Too bad because it used to be a pretty cool place to eat.

I know its only temporary, but I was really bummed when I attempted to have my favorite soup yesterday. I must admit I haven't tried everything on the menu, I just stick to what I know. But even before fatty Oprah divulged on television how good their Red Velvet cake is, I was a huge fan. Can't wait till this place reopens.

I work one block from the Highland location. It has been packed everyday since it opened. I have gone in several times with co-workers and had to wait for a table, then wait for service. The waits can be quite long. Once, we were given a free meal because we had waited so long for our food. Accidents happen, places can be short-staffed. By itself, slow service would not necessarily convince me to never go back. But I have gotten sick twice at this place !! They have a "B" letter grade posted in the window, which does not scare me off so much. I've eaten at some pretty seedy places and been fine. I don't know whether my food was contaminated, but something is not right in that kitchen. Besides that, I am not a fan of the flavors. The Doughboy salad, made with boiled chicken, tasted like something from the Ralph's refrigerator. If you want this type of sanwich-salad food with snotty trendy people around, I would recommend Cheebo on Sunset. At least the food is better there.... Read more

Pretty sure this place has been close for over 6 months now. . . If you're in the neighborhood, try The Little Next Door [which is literally next door to the space formerly occupied by Doughboys] or Joan's on 3rd. If you don't mind going a little further west, Clementine is alway a great option.

DIRTY DIRTY DIRTY... Once again, this place has proven to be one of the dirtiest places in town. It was closed again Aug 17th for a few days for VERMIN INFESTATION!! Doughboys has a bogus sign saying its because they were remodeling their kitchen -BS. This place has dirty floors, dirty waiters, and dirty food. If you want to be trendy and stupid, go ahead, eat here, I think Ratatouille is the chef! DO NOT EAT HERE UNLESS YOU WANT SURPRISE MEAT IN YOUR FOOD.

Doughboys has the best French Onion Soup on the planet, I am sure . The red velvet cake is a perfect mini cake for a special birthday or special occasion. My complaint is not about the food- but the overall experience of the place is sort of tiring. It is very small, and even outside you will be crammed up next to someone who will probably be complaining about something worth rolling your eyes over. Inside you are literally on top of everyone. It isn't a comfortable place to eat. The food is really worth it sometimes.

I Loved it! I really had the best experience & loved the food! My new favorite restaurant! THE CONS: watch how much you order to drink. .. They don't have a restroom. Isn't that ridiculous for a restaurant?? and the tap water is DISGUSTING! Parking is a headache... THE PROS: the food is awesome! Great portions, flavors, friendly service, cool crowd... all good!

Doughboys is an adorable place to have brunch with your friends, just not to actually eat at. It's so sad because we given it so many tries because it's cute in hopes of finding a good dish to eat but, alas, the food is no good. The ideas are great but then the execution is all wrong!

Whenever I go by Doughboys they are always packed. I can't imagine why. I have tried them on several occasions, wanting to give them the benefit of the doubt, but their food is simply inferior. Their salads are limp and not particularly fresh. Their sandwiches are made with gluey bread and inferior ingredients. Even their dessert bars are nothing special. Although their menu really sounds fantastic, know in advance that this is food prepared with no imagination or style and mediocre quality ingredients. For a much better experience try Mani's around the corner on Fairfax (and I am not a vegetarian, they just have better food).

If the Atallguyla was a frequent visitor to Doughboys he would know that the restroom is shared with the bar next door. You just have to go through the kitchen. Real frequent buddy. And the secret is the chocolate cupcake is much better than the red velvet cake. try it.

Im a frequent visitor to Doughbys and as of 7/22/07 they have no restrooms available...And, the one sign they have stating this is posted inside the restaurant so if you eat outside you would NEVER know... I find this very disconcerting and when I asked the waiter why they were allowed to stay open without a public restroom, his answer was that the building was "grandfathered" in... I will not go back there until this situation has been rectified. Try the restaurant next door " The Little Door Next Door" . Good food and they have a restroom open to the public...

I decided to give Doughboys a second chance...what a MISTAKE! First off, the service is terrible. My drinks didn't come till after the food was delivered. But that is the least of their worries. When is someone going to tell the restaurant community that simply changing ingredients does not mask bad food. Take the lauded 'after school special'. What a joke! Putting emmantal cheese on soggy, stale bread is not 'updating a classic'. Eeww! The thought of it is making me sick. I won't even go into detail about the mac and cheese (DO NOT order this. No matter how good it sounds. Go to Trader Joes and get their frozen mac and cheese. Ten times better. Trust me) Bottom line: Save your money. Eat at home. Or at Joan's on Third (a few doors down). Unless you're craving Red Velvet cake. The Red Velvet cake is the only reason I'm giving them 2 stars instead of 1.

I found this place after researching for good french onion soups in L.A. since that's what my boyfriend loves. After some research, I found DoughBoys and although the last recent couple reviews were not that great, I decided to take a risk and try it. We went on a Tuesday night and there were a lot of people. We were seated in a very small table smushed between two tables that hardly allowed any space to walk through. The waitress looked tired but nonetheless nice (she even got one of our drinks wrong). But, after some time of deciding on a dish to order out of their huge menu, I decided on the Monster (in the Sandwich section) and my boyfriend got the Tuna Melt (one of their specials). The Tuna Melt was supposed to come with a Chicken Noodle Soup but they allowed him to replace it with his French Onion Soup for $2.50 more. When the food arrived, we knew that we would be taking most of it home as leftovers. The portions were enormous and completely worth the money spent and bes... Read more

I have been here several times with my boyfriend. He likes their breakfasts and is partial to the healthy pancakes that they serve...they are a bit too healthy tasting for me. I really like their french onion soup. It has a ton of delicious cheese and tastes the way I want french onion soup to taste. I order it without the bread in the soup. The salads are okay. They are nothing great, but I do like getting the soup and salad for a balanced meal. The lemon bars are tasty. We heard they have a great red velvet cake and have wanted to try it, but the last few times we wanted to eat there the line was way too long and we ate elsewhere. Overall it is a pretty good place to eat.

I have given this place two chances and have been disappointed both times. During my first visit, I ordered a sandwich and my date ordered a bowl of soup and salad as an entre. They served him about 5-10 minutes earlier than me, making it very awkward. It turned out that my order had been forgotten. That would have been no big deal, if the sandwich had been worth the wait. The bread was rubbery, though. I thought they were a bakery? My trip there last night, however, took the cake. I went with a group of friends. First of all, they have no place to accommodate a group of more than four. Prepare to wait - long. Two of us ordered "chili." What we were given was a bowl of over spiced, canned tomatoes and macaroni. No exaggeration. My friend ordered a pulled pork sandwich that they claim right in their menu is the best you can get anywhere. If pulled pork that has no salt or flavor and is completely dried out, then served on a PITA - sure. They've got it down! Their vers... Read more

My wife, kids and I used to eat at this place frequently and yesterday I found out that Doughboys was closed down by the city (Hlth-dept) due to rodents and vermine. Closed now for 2 or 3 days tells me just how bad it must be. I've talked to a couple of the workers at doughboys about the shut down and I am telling everyone I know now. Another reason I've decided to stop my family from going is because we've even seen the owner, Frank treating his employees really bad in there. You can tell the workers hate working there. One time he yelled at this waitress so loud for something and me and my family were shocked. How unprofessional! There's no place to sit where you can't hear other's conversations. The bathrooms are through the kitchen area and the kitchen looked not clean at all. Now that the city has closed Doughboys down, I will never ever eat here again. I have to say that the waiteresses and staff are all really nice which is why I get even more upset when I see the way ... Read more

Doughboy's is great comfort food. A soup and sandwich is great on a cool Sunday night. A great way to wind down the weekend before the week starts. The After School Special is a delicious twist on an old childhood favorite: Grilled Cheese and tomato soup. The Slopy Joe is great. A little-known secret for the uber-gluttonous - add sour cream and a poached egg to it. It will make two meals, and probably not great if you're on a diet, but it's fantastic. The salads are fairly fresh. I like the goat cheese salad (may not be called that, but I can't remember exactly). The only thing I've tried that has gone over well is an onion soup. Again, I can't remember the exact name, but it jsut doesn't taste very good. And they have so many other great options, I would avoid this one. Their deserts - can't go wrong with any of them. The red velvet cake was featured on Oprah, I believe (even if I'm not a fan of her, it's no surprise she has great taste in cakes). All of them are great. I haven't actu... Read more

I brought my parents here while they were visiting. We made the mistake of coming on a sunday, so we had to wait, but it was SO WORTH IT!!! I got the barley, flax seed, blueberry something-or-other pancakes and they were amazing! Bonus was they are healthy. To be honest, even if they guaranteed a triple by-pass, I'd still order them! Doughboys Came here for lunch with a bunch of co-workers. I have read some reviews prior to visiting this place and they were pretty good. I had also asked around and people said they are famous for their Red Velvet Cake!!! Breakfast is served all day so YAY! I got the jelly roll which basically is and egg cooked like a crepe and rolled with turkey sausage, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms then topped with housemade chili, cheese, and broiled. This dish came with two rolls and corncake and it was HUGE! Here is the breakdown of what my co-workers got: Sloppy Joe (HUGE!), 1/2 salad + soup(the soup was the size of a Pho bowl, i'm serious!), Scrappy and the Dirty (you shoulda seen the size of the grits! came with corncake too), L.A mufaletta (HUGE!), Walnut crusted strawberry french toast (i think there were 8 slices!) The portions are big and the taste even bigger. Everything on the menu was under $10. After lunch we decided to get some sweets to go and I had to try the famous red velvet ... Read more

I've only come to LosAngles for 2 months but already visited this restaurant 3 times. The line waiting for seats during brunch hours on weelends might be a holdback. However, if there're no too many members in your group or you go by yourself, to sit at the bar maybe a bette rchoice which can save you lots of time. So far I've tried their salad and soup combination, pancake breakfast combo, and french toast pie. The quality of food are excellent and the portion of food is really big. Lots of customers might not finish that by themselves, then sharing would be more reasonable. And the waiters are quite friendly and would ask if you need anything from time to time. The only thing I'd like to complain is the supercrowded space and we need share the restrooms with another restaurant. Customers need to go through the kitchen for the restromms, which probably would make the waiters and cooks run into the guests. Well it's not a romantic or tranquil, casual dining place but you can still get ... Read more

This is simply the most delicious comfort food in the city. You can always meet a friend, read a magazine, kick back and wait for your HUGE portion to come out, fresh and tasty. MUST haves are the French Onion soup, Red Velvet cake, Cob Salad, Warm portobello salad. I have never been disappointed. Don'g order the chili if you are looking for a hearty meal however, it is way sweet and so is anything here with lots of tomato in it. Just a "warning." My friend and I had been planning on going here for months....it was certainly worth the wait!!! What a fabulous and eclectic breakfast menu! My friend had the french toast pie....described as a cross between french toast and bread pudding. It was scrumptious and ENORMOUS!!! I had the breakfast sandwich and it was equally delicious (and was enough for two meals). I don't want to give out secrets, but if you get there b4 9 AM on weekends, you'll have no problem being seated right away. We ordered several cakes on the way out and LOVED the red velvet cake...Oprah is correct....the best in the country!!!

this is a great breakfast and lunch all day place that opens until 12am. i've always at least decent service there but most of the time the service has been good. i love their pancakes but i prefer thicker french toast. for those that don't have a sweet tooth, i'm happy to report their other breakfast dishes are just as good. the choices are so many i recommend just going to see their menu at the website. their warm mushroom salad is really great too as well as the steak or onion soup (if you can ignore the grease from the melted cheese). the only thing i'm kind of disappointed in is their bread, ironic considering their name. the bread on the whole is very average except for their cornbread which i love. however i'm happy to report the blueberry muffins are great tho not as sweet as normal ones. all in all, this is a great restaurant that's definitely worth a couple of tries. everyone has different tastes and you might just be unlucky enough to get something you don't love t... There are a few things that you MUST eat at Doughboys. First off, it's the french onion soup. Yes, it's oily and fatty but it's soooooo good. Second, the warm portabello mushroom salad is absolutely delish. Third, the Monster is messy but just ask for a lot of napkins cuz it's really tasty. Haven't had a chance to try their desserts yet because the portions at Doughboys are big, but maybe one day, I'll get around to it.

I love breakfast food, and am always looking for a place that has good french toast. Of all of the places I've tried in LA, this place has the most options as far as different kinds of french toast (and it's delicious). I also wanted to try the red velvet cake that I've heard people rave about, so I took one to go. The frosting was good, but the cake itself was completely tasteless and rubbery/spongy-very disappointing. I've been there for lunch too and it was great. There is such a huge selection and everything sounds good. There's something here for everyone. Everything my friends and I have tried here has been great (except the red velvet cake, that is), and I would definitely recommend it. The downsides are the long waits on weekends, and the parking.

Doughboys is a solid choice for inspired salads and sandwiches. The onion soup is very good. They add tomatoes to their Caesar salad to make it extra yummy. And don't miss the decadent peanut butter, banana and chocolate sandwich. It's worth the calories. The only down side to Doughboys is the terrible service. The servers are like robots. No hello's, no smiles, no thank you's, nothing. Aside from that this place is one of my all time favorites.

Yes, there is a usually a line on the week-ends and during lunch which is why I always go after "rush hour". Regardless, the food here is great..and different. In L.A, where you are used to seeing so many of the same menu items time and time again, Doughboys makes for a really nice chance. From their extensive breakfast menu to their soups and salads and sandwiches, Doughboys just has is down. Having never been a huge French Onion Soup fan, Doughboys changed my mind..big time. I find myself craving it pretty often now. If you are sitting at Doughboys, look around. It's repeat customers time and time again. That's how you know a place is good. The atmosphere is cute (I'm glad they expanded), the service is just fine and, yes sometimes the food does take awhile - especially if you are starving and hungover...but, it's so worth it at the end!!

Nevermind the snobs crying about the service here...you could p*nch me in the face while serving me the Blueberry Flaxseed Pancakes and I would be a happy camper. Go for the soup/salad combo and you will be treated to the most delicious bread this side of the country. And believe me, when Oprah says your Red Velvet cake is tops, she means it!. As for the service mentioned above...yeah it may be quirky and a bit slow at times...but it's a bakery/cafe not a five star restaurant.

My office took lunch to go from Doughboys. At first I thought it was too expensive. However, when I saw the portions I discovered I was mistaken. I ordered the soup and salad combo which comes with a half salad and a full soup. I got the equivelent to egg drop soup and the doughboy salad. This also came with bread. The salad used fresh ingredients (except the tomatoes weren't absolutely perfect), the soup was a tiny bit too salty but had great flavor, a good broth for a cold day. The bread, however, was amazing. It was by far the freshest bread I have had since I visited Europe. I also ordered one of the $5 miniature cakes--the red velvet. The cake presentation was spectacular, but the taste was even better. It was just dense enough and not overly sweet. I liked it even better than the red velvet cupcake at Sprinkles.

It is unlikely you will leave Doughboys hungry: the food is pretty grubbin and they are generous with the portions. The menu has interesting options and it's readily apparent they care about quality. Some items suffer from too much of the same flavor... the bruschetta salad is delicious but after the second pound of tomatoes a little voice rises from within you and cries "please... send no more tomatoes"... same with the artichoke sandwich, order it only if you are prepared to eat a serious quantity of artichokes... because they are gonna keep on comin'! Its also worth mentioning that though you will be seated quickly the time between ordering and being served is normally abnormally long its not fast food so order an appetizer if you are starving.

I don't understand why everyone loves this place, it takes forever to be seated, once you are seated it takes at least an hour to get your food and once you get your food it's completely TASTELESS. I've given this place about 3 chances, I've really tried to like this place because a lot of people rave about it, but each time I regret going there and each time I'm disappointed. NEVER AGAIN! If you care more about quantity rather than taste and quality, this place is for you.

I am a dessert conniseur and rarely find that many places that make red velvet cake. I was not disappointed. The cake was to die for & I would DEFINITELY return to try that and any of their other desserts too. The portion as well as the price was worth the drive across town. The staff was friendly also. The only caveat - the parking can be a bit of a headache.
