About Spy Game
"A thinking person's thriller, Spy Game employs dense plotting without sacrificing the kinetic momentum that is director Tony Scott's trademark. The film has the byzantine scope of a novel, focusing on veteran CIA operative Nathan Muir (Robert Redford), whose protégé Tom Bishop (Brad Pitt) is scheduled for execution in a Chinese prison. It's Muir's last day before retiring (cliché alert!), and Bishop is being deliberately sacrificed by oily CIA officials to ensure healthy trade with China. Muir has 24 hours to rescue Bishop and his perfunctory love interest (Catherine McCormack), and Spy Game connects the mentor's end-run strategy to flashbacks of his student's exploits in Berlin, Beirut, and beyond..." - Amazon

Let me start off by saying no action thrillers are realistic. I think people up in here criticizing its lack of realism don't see many movies. As far as action/thriller movies go, I'd have to say this one was pretty damn realistic. And it was a good story. So I will rate this movie a five because it is one of the very few screenplays that truly impresses me. The characters are so dynamic and have so much depth. Especially Redford's character. I've watched it several times now, and finally have begun to pick up some of the fascinating and provacative details (or themes, perhaps). I found it very compelling when I thought about how they made an issue out of Muir having never had much of a meaningful relationship with a woman. Or for that matter getting close to anyone at all. The two things he said to Bishop: 1) "put away some money so you can retire someplace warm and don't touch it for anyone, ever"; and 2) "if you go off the reservation I will not come after you." As Redford's character ended up doing both for Bishop (giving up his life savings and helping Bishop after he went rogue), it makes you realize Bishop was the only person in the world Muir had ever really cared about. Kinda made me wonder if the reason Redfor's character sold out the girl was really safety because before she came along Bishop just worshipped Muir. Anyway, I found that very compelling; a beautiful theme well disguised as a fast-paced and exciting spy thriller. Random thought: my friends and I occasionally comment on how Redford and Pitt really do look related. Same height, build, hair and eye color and general face-structure. Makes you wonder if they really are related, since Redford seems to like picking Pitt to star in his movies.

Good acting and great plot. The flashback scenes when Redford explains his and Pitt's history are great! All around great movie.

Fortunately, I saw Spy Game on its premiere night. I found it to be the equal of the Royal Tenenbaums in terms of entertainment, although, obviously, for different reasons. Finally a smart, semi-apolitical picture from Redford. Anything to prevent The Castle II!

The best film I have seen in a long time. While the end of the film is predictable, the world of intrigue which Robert Redford must enter to try and get his agent out of harms way is fascinating. Since the film consists of many flashbacks over a surface story in which Brad Pitt's character has been captured by the Chinese, there is no need for a great deal of continuity testing, although each segment of the film does test well. The climax isn't huge, but it is there, and while the future of the characters remains unknown at the end of the film, I was quite impressed with the realistic qualities of the film, and its not so realistic ones as well.

Maybe if there weren't so many outstanding movies circulating right now, I would give Spy Game a higher rating. But given how many superior options there are (Royal Tenenbaums, Beautiful Mind, Ali), I'd have to say that Spy Game is not quite in that league. The acting by Redford and Pitt is predictably good, the plot was interesting, and the reenactments of war-torn Lebanon were astonishing - but somehow, Spy Game lacked something. It dragged at times - though I can't put my finger on why - and it left me feeling a little unsatisfied. Definitely not a bad movie, and probably deserving of a higher rating - but with the wealth of options out there right now, my recommendation is to wait for a rental.

I loved this movie. Brad Pitt and Robert Redford are excellent in it. It is most definitely worth going to see at the movies and I am going to buy it the day it hits the shelves.

"Spy Game" is worth seeing in the theater. It's a fast-paced, engrossing action/thriller starring Robert Redford and Brad Pitt. Redford is retiring from the CIA when Pitt, a fellow agent, gets into some serious trouble. The movie revolves around Redford's efforts to help his old friend out of a sticky situation. The plot is action-packed, and it moves along at a brisk pace. It was an added bonus to watch both Redford and Pitt on the big screen. If you like action and excitement, don't miss this one.

Robert Redford and Brad Pitt. What a combination.
Their timing was impeccable! The female lead role portraying Elizabeth Hadley was way off, especially with regard to her looks. She was an excellent actress. However, she would have been better cast as a CIA person either in the field or in the office. It would have been more believable if someone similar to Helena Bonham Carter had played the damsel. The pace could have been a tad more staccato and the soundtrack could have increased the suspence factor more in a few places. I rated the movie a 4 because the audience was not spared several ugly truths about "spy games" and our intelligence was not insulted as much as in other movies of this genre. Be still my heart... Robert (experience, charisma, machismo!)...Brad (Strong appeal, passionate, fun!). Yes, I'll buy the video!
