A smart man, and a valuable public servant in other walks of life, however.

He was a first rate diplomat however. Remember Jay's Treaty?

Ambitious as he was, Jay preferred to be Governor of New York (which he considered a greater position). Jay did not hold the Court in high esteem. And Court historians generally have not held him in high esteem.
