Not only were the first flybys accomplished, but the first orbiters and landers. The Venera program established the extreme atmospheric pressure of Venus, as well as the high temperatures and the light levels. These light levels allowed for the photographs that several Venera landers captured from the Venusian surface. The Venera program was also less politically-motivated than Russia's Luna and Mars program, and thus had a more scientific purpose. There were 16 Venera probes that had the official designations, as well as a few other launch failures, typically branded with the catch-all Kosmos designation.
