I resolve to not need resolutions. Improvement should be a constant thing and never need some lame excuse to happen.

I don't think resolutions are pointless. I think that it's good to set goals for yourself because it gives people direction. Of course, people often get lost, but it's good to have some motivation in your life.

Original 12/31/2008 I have never made a New Year's Resolution. I figure that if I'm resolved to do something, I'm going to do it whenever I decide to do it. But, this year is different. I'm on a mission to get on this TV show. This is my dream. This is my quest. Thanks for a highly entertaining year. See you on the other side... Up Date: This year I resolve to improve my Nazi-hunting skills.

I find the New Year to be a great time for a fresh start. I agree that any new day or minute is a chance to make a change or even turn it all around, but what better time to start than a whole new year? New Years Eve and New Years Day are an exciting time for me. New Years Eve is a time for reflection about the year I've left behind, and gratitude for what I've learned and how I've grown. New Years Day is a day of projection, where I'm excited about what lies ahead and how I can continue to make progress in my life. I am very excited for 2012, I don't have a Resolution so to speak but know that I'm doing to right things to give myself an opportunity to achieve my dreams and hope that you are as well. Happy 2012 RIA!

Finally. . . If you need a holiday to manufacture pointless promises you will eventually break, perhaps your problem lies a little deeper. . .

Exactly! What I need or want to change I'm already going to try to change. Why would I make any sort of redundant resolution just because of the time of year. I understand the "idea" behind New Year's Resolutions I just don't think that they truly have any effect.

You can make all the resolutions you want because your just going to re-use them again next year anyway!

I think they're fine. They're great for paving the road to Hell starting in mid-January.

There's nothing wrong with setting yourself a new years resolution, as setting goals in your life is supposed to help motivate you. There is no point in setting yourself any goals however if you don't intend on working on them. Personally I don't bother setting myself any new years resolutions as I know I'll get distracted away from them and do something else instead.

Resolutions are not pointless so long as people work at them. And why wait for New Year's to work toward a goal? I should think this can be done at any time.

I think the idea of resolutions is great, but I know I personally never seem to live up to my resolutions, so I quit making them.

why would anyone make a resolution to do something on new years. It just sets you up for failure. Maybe if you're a glutton for punishment i guess.

I also think that resolutions are rather pointless.  If you want to make a constructive change in your life, you can do it at any moment.  Once you initially realize that change is needed, that will give you all the motivation you need to pursue your goals.   Waiting until the New Year (or any other arbitrary date) just pushes it down the road and you'll end up loosing that motivation and momentum to get your goals accomplished.

Resolutions a lot of the time equal 'pipe dreams.'  However, I do think it's a good time to start thinking about things you may want to do.  The beginning of the year for lots of people (me included) coincides w/hope and optimism.  I really do believe that.

I eventually have come to this conclusion also. The last few years I have been much more realistic..If  I make any they are ones I know I can accomplish.

Just because folks don't follow through on resolutions doesn't make them a bad idea. Objective analysis of one's own life is difficult for most people (including moi), so anything that encouraages it - even something as artificial as new years resolutions - is a good thing.

Sounds like a plan to me, can't disappoint myself that way :) Yea, I procrastinate like a mad-man. I never made resolutions, 'cause I knew I'd never keep them.

They are pointless if you find no passion or drive or effort in them.

As a person who continualy tries to improve himself, I don't see much point in waiting until New Years to do this.

They are pointless. The other 19 things on here aren't necessarily bad suggestions but one should commit to them everyday of the year. I imagine most people break their resolutions before January is even over.

Sometimes I think they are pointless, but I still think they are fun regardless...and I am always happy if I actually succeed at one...

Maybe I am just not a motivated person, but I never make New Years Resolutions. What does a new year have to do with improving your life. Why can't you start doing something to make your life better any other day of the year.

This attitude may work for some, but personally I find resolutions useful. The winter solstice-Christmas-New Year season is an excellent metaphor for renewal--who doesn't want to throw out some of the crap in their life and start some stuff over? I certainly do.
