No one is talking about building a wall around America or isolating the United States from the rest of the world. However, in order to protect our security, we need to ask more questions about the people who enter our country from other countries. I'm sorry Freak, but what exactly do you want? First you say you don't want war, and then you say you don't want security. What exactly are we supposed to do- nothing? Just forgive and forget? The only alternative to war itself is increased security in order to prevent a war in the future. Ports espescially need to be closely monitored.

Yes. We need to stop millions of illegal Mexicans coming across the southern border. We would probably stop terrorists or illegal's entering from the Canadian border, also. But, the real problem is coming in thoruigh ports. Ships and ports need much more security in and around them.

Ok let look at he long term if we allow too many people into the U.S. we only speed up the process of over population. We must allow for there to be atleast some immigrants, to be blunt the immigrants historically have been the ones to do certain jobs most established people of this ountry will not do. At the same time we must monitor are borders very closely one terrorist that hurts one family is to many.

Excellent idea. Getting into our country was probably the biggest hurdle for the 9/11 terrorists. Once they had that accomplished, it was probably was easier than it should have been to blow up the tower

Keep the borders as tight as we can. Maybe that way well catch the s.o.b.'s that R still here. Were all very lucky 2 live N this country, & we need 2 portect it & our people. I hope the GOV. makes it MUCH harder 2 enter, & just "maybe" we won't ever have 2 see what we've seen in these past wks. Peace & health, Shorts

It sounds good, but the Mexican border is already controlled by people that are armed and shoot daily innocent Mexicans trying to move to the U.S. for a better life.

Yes. This is a reality that must be addressed. Our nation is an open, tolerant nation for the most part, and there will always be some racist or reactionary loony who will sully our nation's image in the eyes of the world. We already implement control checks for drugs, illegal immigrants, and so forth. Terrorism is just as much a hindrance to national security as these two are. As someone with no drug abuse background or convictions, and as someone who never had a need for an au pair from Guatemala or Burkina Faso, I have no problem with tighter scrutiny and security at our international borders.

FYI - its not at the border - these guys enter legally. It begins with the paperwork, either at the airport or at the INS office - its not like these guys are crossing the Rio Grande to get in.

I don't see how that would help.
If any non-us resident has already tried to cross from Canada to U.S., you will know that borders are already pretty tight. I don't think that's where the problem lies.

Yeah, lets have a big line of soldiers around the US border who are so tightly packed together that they are slowly being asphyxiated. What are you, nuts? Haven't you noticed that whenever the US increases security, things get crazily out of hand? Soon, we would be in the process of constructing a titanium bullet proof wall and inviting more attacks! Can't we think of something that doesn't involve killing, more security, or war? If not, I will go buy us all lobotomies.

it's tight as it is. When people are determined to get in it's almost immposible to keep them out. You'll only end up violating the innocent peoples rights.

Obviously it is common sense to implement tighter controls at U.S. borders. The reason why most of these Arab terrorists entered the border through Florida is because the border restrictions there were weak. It was an easy port of entry to enter through Miami/Fort Lauderdale. I am not saying that we should isolate ourselves from the world or restrict immigration; what I am saying is that we need to ask more questions about and towards people entering our borders. Take for instance in Miami, the port authorities barely checks your identification and at times they may not even ask you questions about where you have been and what you have in your bags! Hopefully, this will change. Americans have become way too complacent about what comes in and out of our borders and unfortunately, it took the events of September 11, 2001 to change that.

I agree. I am not opposed to immigration or foreign tourists but no matter how inconvenient it may be..we need to tighten security at the borders.

I don't think we need to stop immigration and foreign tourists in general, but we do need to be more careful about who we let in this country.

It makes more sense than putting your brains in basket and throwing the doors wide open. I was beginning to think we should put signs at the borders "Come on in - use us, abuse us and HAVE A NICE DAY!". I'm not against immigration, but everyone who comes to our shores these days is not a sweet old peasant woman from Poland or Fieval the mouse.
