Lorenzo Charles' tip-in at the buzzer to win the 1983 NCAA Championship 5

very fortunate outcome. benny anders nearly stole the ball from whittenburg and the offense had broken down completely as whittenburg launched a panicked jump shot. if not for akeem olajuwon's mystifying decision to wander out to the top of the key and leave charles all alone under the basket, valvano's brush with immortality might simply be a footnote in history. a lucky play that nevertheless perfectly captures all the compelling aspects of "march madness."

Lorenzo Charles' tip-in at the buzzer to win the 1983 NCAA Championship 4

He came from nowhere. There will always be the memory of Jim Valvano rushing onto the court, looking for somebody to hug.

Unforgetable! A huge upset with Charles appearing out of nowhere to dunk the errant shot.

Lorenzo Charles' tip-in at the buzzer to win the 1983 NCAA Championship 5

This was unbelievable. David beats Goliath, pandemonium breaks lose, Valvano running around like a chicken with his head cut off, looking for someone to hug. All the more poignant because Valvano was gone just a few short years later, his life cut short by cancer.
