One interview was enough to convince me this is a work of fiction. The catcher involved simple said it never happened and it was impossible for him to have 'called his shot' and hit the next pithc out because if Ruth had the next pitch would have been at his head.

Real or not, a great story!

If he really did it that would be an amazing feat but seeing the fuzzy tape of it, it looks as if he's pointing at the pitcher and jawing at opposing team's bench. But hell I'm all for a good folktale.

More a myth than an event. Even Ruth got a little vague about whether or not this actually happened.

This is a great story. I dont know if it is true, ive never actually seen the video, but i would like to. i dont see why he couldnt call his shot. its not like it was luck. Ruth had amazing skill and theres no reason that he couldn't of ended up popping out. he hit it just right and sent it sailing over the wall in cenetr field, just like he said.

The preponderance of evidence (or lack thereof) suggests that this event did not really happen. But that's the beauty of Babe Ruth. He's kind of like King Charlegmagne. If you read accounts on Charlemagne shortly after his death, he is quite impressive, but nothing amazing. But check out biographies a century or two later; he's a combination of Conan, Zeus, and Alexander the Great, i.e. - legendary. Rith is kind of like that. His legend status over the years is ever increasing. Did he really drink 40 highballs and fool around with 5 women the night before, sleep in the dugout during the game and come up to the plate and hit 3 homers that day? We may never know; but stories like these, about Ruth, abound. One numbnuts of a ballplayer (I'll give you a hint: he has a porn star like moustache and he goes by the initials of Jeff Kent) thought Babe Ruth used steroids too (I didn't know eating 4 steaks is a steroid). The called shot is just another example of Ruth's status as mythological hero. Fortunately, we have Ruth's statistical record that supports some of these incredible claims. We know Ruth hit that homer off of Charlie Root to help the Yankees win the 1932 World Series. Whether he called the shot, we may never truly know.

More myth than reality. It would be nice if it actually happened, but it has been firmly established by baseball historians that this did not take place. Video footage has established that Ruth was pointing at the Cubs' dugout, not centerfield.

I would have loved to have seen the Babe play! Baseball was King back in those days.

What's so hard about beating the Cubs?

Did he REALLY call it? I'm not 100% convinced.
