Beer actually has a long history in Mexico going back to the 16th century when it was introduced by the Spanish. Negra Modelo is an Austrian style lager. This type of beer was introduced to Mexico by Austrian-German immigrants when the country was controlled by the Austro-Hungarian empire. Negra Modelo has a wonderful balance of malt and hops with a body that glides down the throat. It is very slightly sweet and yet has a slightly dry finish. This is not a lager I would drink after mowing the lawn, but it can't be beat with meals. One of my favorite beers.

One of my favorite beers... It's not too heavy, but definitely has its own distinct flavor. I would recommend it for almost any dish. Suprisingly, it works great with Indian food. Don't ask, it doesn't make sense to me either...

Negra Modelo: 1st has SUCH a sexy name, that it's enough to rate it HIGH 2nd IT'S WORTH A TRIP 2 MEXICO (we've hardly any distribution in all Europe: I blame this lack\lag of globalisation; does it work only 4 imperialistic powers? FUCKOFF imperialism) 3 it tastes Rich

When did mexico learn to brew beer. Not one of the best I've ever had but certainly the best mexican beer. Good to see mexico putting it best foot forward.

My favorite Mexican beer, I enjoy it with tacos or nachos or some other Mexican dish. It goes down smooth, is real easy to drink. Real nice taste.

12oz bottle pours a dark brown color with a tan slightly vanishing head, it has almost a cognac aftertaste

Tastes like crap, but makes a wonderful marinade, which is the only use I have for it.

The Mexicans know a little more about german culture than you think. The accordian is no fluke, and the beer is spot on.

Enjoyed it much more than the standard Modelo. Light bodied for the style with some good flavors.

Excellent Beer. Great when eating mexican food. Great color, awesome taste, well balanced beer. This beer is for people who enjoy drinking dark beers. Not as rich as european beers but very close. Best of all mexican beers.

Update: Wow...its been over 5 years since I first rated this beer. First...I'm getting old, and second...I've been here on rateitall.com a long time. I'm finishing off a 6 pack of this right now, when I didn't intend to drink 6 beers. This isn't a beer I buy often, but it was the best option I could find at a local Latino bar and package store that was the only place open after I left work tonight. The fact that I drank all 6 beers in a couple of hours tells me that its easy to drink. It is a very easy beer  to put down, yet is nicer in flavor than a Bud, Miller, or most other popular beer brands. Like other reviewers here I would have to say that this is my favorite mass produced, Mexican beer.4/16/2003 - This is a quality beer. It has a nice dark taste, without the bitter aftertaste that many dark beers produce. Comparable to Michelob's Amber Bock, yet better.

One of the better Mexican beers available in the US.  Cheaper than most imported beers, now that the Euro has gone through the roof.

I really liked Negra Modelo! I think it's one of the better Mexican beers, and often suggest it to others when they want something other than Corona.

This is absolutely the best Mexican beer out there......take that how ever you want to.  I would drink this over Corona and Dos Equis any day but it's not my choice over English and Irish Stouts.

A full flavored beer with just a hint of a chocolate. Not a heavy beer like most darks. I would rank this as one of the top three dark beers available in supermarkets in the USA. Reasonably priced and the distribution provides a fresh product.

Un sabor bueno, lastima que el grupo modelo use materia prima "agregados" que le llaman, seria muy bueno a que se apegaran a la ley de puridad y solo hicieran cerveza con los 4 ingredientes que marca

Negra Modelo is dark as the name implies.  It has a hearty flavor, but not too heavy.  It is my 3rd favorite behind Victoria and Indio beers.  I like it better with food than as a stand alone beer.  I can drink Coronas without food; but not many Negra Modelos without some backup.  It is certainly one of the best foreign beers available in the U.S.

Excellent hearty offering that goes great with most dinners and is not especially bitter. It's a Vienna Lager, so similar to Sam Boston Lager.

Good but not great. I expect a little more malt flavor from a dark beer. I can't imagine washing down spicy Mexican food with a stout however, so, given the circumstances I accept its hoppiness as necessary.

When looking at the bottle, and taking in the "negra" factor, you'd be surprised by the taste of this beer. Doesn't have that heavy bold flavor most people associate with "dark" beers. Don't get me wrong, it has a kick, but a smooth one. Though I personally prefer regular Modelo, this is a very good brew.

It may be dark to the eye but not to the palate. The finest Mexican brew, bar none. I have drank most all Mexican beers including micro brews and Tex Mex, this is their finest. Great tasting on the way down, incredible after taste of chocolatey cinnamon combination. Modella Epecial a close second.

Tastes like a dark beer, but doesn't have the weight of a dark beer. Reminds me a little of some of the quality brown ales - Newcastle, Brooklyn Brown, etc. Very, very good beer. Just don't let the ignoramus bartender try and jam a lime in this beer - just because it's Mexican doesn't mine you drink it with a lime.
