My daughter bought a 2009 Honda 420 Rancher. It only has 36 hours on it and will not go into gear!! She took it into the dealership and they told her they were having part failures and they would fix it. Now they have called back and said that it is out of warranty by 1 month and they will have to tear into it to fix it and will be charging her to repair it. They say it will more than likely have to have the motor rebuilt and the transmission rebuilt and that it will be very expensive. She takes excellent care of everything she owns and has not mistreated the 4 wheeler in any way. We own 2 other honda 4 wheelers, 1 for 15 years and 1 for 10 years with no problems at all. You would think that a new 2009 Rancher would last longer than 36 hours wouldn't you????? And you would think that Honda would take better care of a customer than that also!!!! My question is anyone else having the same problem??????

I have an '02 2wd rancher with over 4000 miles on it, only maintenance are oil changes about every 1500 miles. Extremely reliable, never had any problems with it and it is the ES model. I also have 2 '07 420's that are great machines also. They get much less use but I haven't had any issues with them either. My '02 stays out in the sun a lot and the clear plastic on the instrument cluster deteriorated also. Wet sand the clear plastic with 600 grit or finer wet-or-dry sandpaper and polish with compound or scratch remover that you would use on your car. It won't look like brand new again but it will definitely be usable.

I have a 2002 Rancher 350 2wd. It has been an all around great machine since I bought it new. The only problem I have had is a wire underneath got ripped off and it wouldn't shift. I stood it on the rear rack and repaired it and also rerouted the wire to a better location. Haven't had any other problems other than general maintenance. I also own a grizzly 660 that I have had to pull out of the mud several times with my rancher. I can go more places on the rancher than the grizzly. One complaint I have is the plastic on the speedo is faded so bad that I can't read anything on the display unless I wet the plastic. I have tried to find the plastic without going through honda and have had no luck. Thumbs up for my rancher and all of the harsh treatment it has recieved, I would trust it to go anywhere. Mine is equiped with es, I would not recommend that feature.

As with any product in the world, there is always gona be some sent out with defective parts. "HInts the 90day warnts' So for the few people that had the bad luck of buying a defective wheeler, Stop hating and blaming honda and suck it up. it happends to every one sometime in their life. I got my 2008 rancher 420TM 4X4 on 3-20-09 and have not had one inssue with it. After i broke it in I took it and sunk it under water. "did not mean to haha" I drained the water out of the air box and fired it right up and ran like a champ. I take it out at least 2-3 times a week and run it down my hardwood swamp trails and run in threw deep mud and sticks and water and It has taken everything i have thrown at it. I knew befor i Bought it that HOnda made the strongest most reliable bikes on the market and my 420 has gone beyond my expectations. I have always owns a honda car or bike and i always will. the Fourmans are also great ATVs that i have played with alot. cory

Well, we had a red Honda (the first model with 4 wheels) that ran for years and years, so I had high hopes for the 2005 Rancher I bought. I used it only for light hunting excursions. It always had starter problems and now won't crank at all. Honda is definitely not the brand it used to be and I won't buy another one, 4 wheeler or automobile.

I have had my 2002 rancher 350 (2wheel drive) since it was brand new. If I had my choice at the time I would have bought a bigger 4x4, but this how I got stuck with the Honda. My wife’s grandfather and uncle went in half’s and bought the 2002 rancher brand new. They had it for 1 day when my brother n law and I were taking it up a hill and hit a hole. The Rancher threw my brother n law of the back and I fell off the right side of it. The Ranger rolled down the hill bouncing over 5 feet in the air as it rolled down. It finally came to rest upside down in a barb wire fence at the bottom. It had fallen over 200 feet. When we got to the Rancher the front right wheel was broken off the handle bars were smashed flat, and the racks were bent up. We flipped it back on its wheels and it started right up and we drove it ¼ mile back to the house with 3 wheels. I bought a new 2002 Rancher for my wife’s Grandfather and fixed my new broken rancher up (new wheel, bent the rack back the best I could, n... Read more

HONDA 420 RANCHER MANUAL SHIFT: This quad in my mind is a pile of junk! I have only owned it for one month and it is already in the shop because the water pump is bad, which means there could be motor damage. It is also very hard to shift,i know it is rather new and is not broken in but i have owned many quads before and never had this problem. Honda does however provide its new one year warranty, and that is great but i did not spend 5000 for a new quad to be in the shop already for a rather serious problem which i may run into problems down the road with. Honda does not back their product very good and can not quite understand stand why i am so pissed off about this issue. So when you go to buy your new quad do not buy a rancher, i know history has proven that they are a hard working machine, but that was then. Quality has def gone down hill.

I have a 2007 Honda Rancher with maybe 80 miles on it. I took it back to Honda, where i bought it three days later. The 4X4 wouldn't work. It is a manual shift and wouldn't go into gear. Picked it up after 4 more days and put it in the garage. I took the ATV out 6 months later and it wouldn't go into gear. I took it back to Honda and they said the warranty was out. Well with enough arguing i was able to get them to replace the cable that runs to the front drive axle. It works now but he said it might be the front end gears that are still bad. So go home and try it out! Well i have owned Honda's all my life and this was the last one i will ever buy! I was treated like i didn't know how to ride and i broke it in the 80 miles i put on it. If Honda can't warranty their stuff for more than 6 months then I'm Going to try Yamaha next. So if your looking at the 420 Rancher from Honda, Ask about the Manual shift having problems. Also get to Know the Honda sales people a bit before you buy. I ju... Read more

I have a 2005 Honda Rancher 350 4x4 that I purchased new.  Like with all Honda products I have had excellent luck with this machine.  It is easy to operate and always starts really easy no matter how long is has sat or what the temperature is.In the summer time I use it weekly to pull a 5' wide Swisher brand finish mower to mow my lawn which is about 4 acres.  I use it a lot just around the house for fencing and yard work.  I have took it out four wheeling a few times although I did avoid some of the very worst terrain as I bought this four wheeler more for utility use than four wheeling.  If I were going to ride it in the mud very much I would get some better tires that were made for mud use put on it.  The stock tires are not that good in the mud.About the only thing I have changed on it is adding a twist throttle instead of the thumb control.  I have always been used to riding motorcycles and prefer the twist throttle greatly.  After mowing for 2-3 hours my thumb would hurt until th... I used to ride dirt bikes and was used to going way faster but it I still enjoy flying down the trails with it and beet my buddies 400ex and banchee (just because i can ride better though but still) and when i bought it they made fun of me for getting a uttity. After rideing two stokes for so long i just like the dependableity and enjoy this quad alot. Hope this helps somebody.

I Loved Honda, I loved my 05 Rancher AT, until it started have shift issues. I have put 428 miles on my unit and it has been at the dealership 5 times for angle sensor issues within the last 6 months. I'm tired of getting stranded on the trail, or having to limp back in 5th gear. Even when is operating fine, the tranny won't allow for torque. The fourwheeler is very weak to be a 400. I wish honda would produce an atomatic that wasn't so complicated, maybe a belt drive with out the ESP crap. It couldn't be any more unreliable... If your in the market for Atomatic atv, I would recommend something other than Honda...especially the Rancher AT.

2006 Rancher AT- 150 miles on it and something in the motor rattles terrible at speeds above roughly 40 MPH. The selling dealer and his "district sales manager" claim the noise is normal. Bull $hit. Its too bad, I like the machine other than that.

You are all a bunch of Butt Pirates that think this is a bad bike. I have had this bike for 4 years and had nothing but great rides after great rides. I killed it in a creek under water and pulled it out the other side and it didnt get a drop of water in the oil. If you shade tree grease monkeys knew what you were doing you wouldnt have so many problems. You cant get drunk and run an atv through every single mudd hole you see and expect it to last. Get help and get a life! 02 RANCHER 4X4 RULES!!

The honda rancher is a piece of junk. My friend has a 2002 rancher 350 and my 1986 yamaha moto 4 225 will do circles around that piece of junk in everything. Plus it always breaks and i fix atvs so i always have to fix it.

2003 Honda Rancher 4x4 350cc purchased new in 2002. I find this vehicle inferior our my old Suzuki 230. The older Suzuki did not need parts until 5 -6 years, just pm maintenance. So far on the Rancher I have replaced a starter and muffler at almost 3 years old. Squeeks occur in body movement which requires constant lubracation. The rancher is kept inside and driven daily along with my other machine. I was suprised to see at almost three years old that the Honda Rancher needed so much up keep. I currently have owned three machines in the last 14 years due to my rural location. I would NOT recommend a Honda ATV for my next purchase. Hope this helps.

The rancher is a great atv it handles well in all situations. It has ample power to accomplish any task. I believe it is one of the best middle sized utility atvs.

It has been in and out of the shop.Warranty is no good.It is a $6000.00 ripoff. It has had four motor rebuilt on it .Every time I got it back it would not even make it through the second tank of gas.I am very disapointed in it.It is sitting on my front porch in boxes.I wish you would have financed it because you would be eating that $6000.00 dollars

The rancher is a good all around machine. It has enough power to do work around the farm and you go for a cruz on the trail and have fun. It will do anything that most riders want a machine to do.
