Classic. I remember his lines from Back to School like it was yesterday. "Remember the best part about kids is making them."
irishgit 08/25/2008
Memorable schtick, even when it fell short. Not a real favorite, but I have a lot of respect for a guy who didn`t get a lot of respect.

When you go back and look at the HBO shows, movies, and clips from the 70's and 80's, Dangerfield comes off as slightly dated. But I loved his self-deprecation in a hideously glossy decade like the 80's. Like almost all comedians, he made his personal pain and demons a joke as a form of therapy. (He was one ugly son-of-a-gun and the 'no respect' jokes were funnier because of it.) Looking back, Rodney deserves solid respect for a good act and shtick that is still memorable. Sorry Rod- you getting some respect from me.

A classic comic. His schtick was a bit limited but I would never miss an opportunity to watch. Even in some of the less funny films he was in. He was outstanding in Caddyshack. Sorry to know we won't see him again. RIP Rodney, you always made me laugh.
jaywilton 12/04/2007
I saw him in Detroit's Ford Auditorium. Some guy was yelling at him from the balcony.Rodney shut him up with,"I remember when I had my first beer."
angryjed 12/03/2007
how can you not like Rodney? he put on a comedy clinic every night.

Lemme tell ya', Rodney never got no respect, no respect at all. When Johnny Carson died a CNN producer contacted Rodney's agent to ask if Rodney wanted to do an on-air memorial for Johnny. The agent had to inform CNN that Rodney had died four months earlier. No respect at all.
The last of the great old-school comics. I'm glad I got to see one of them in my life time. In the radio era comics adopted a persona and milked it for laughs by playing to our sense of familiarity. Rodney's "loser" character was the last in the line that included WC Fields' cranky drunkard, Jack Benny's skinflint and Gracie Allen's dumb blonde. Like all of those characters, the fact that they always seemed to be the same belied the fact that a lot of their jokes were really sophisticated and clever.
A travel agent offered me a 21 day special. He told me I would fly from New York to London. Then from Tokyo back to New York. I asked him...how am I supposed to get from London to Tokyo? He told me That is why we give you 21 days.

"This steak still has marks where the jockey was hitting!"
doobiesNhof 04/02/2006
"I called my girlfriend and she told me to come over because nobody was home. When I went over, there WAS nobody at home!!" Just an example of his humor. Always cutting himself down. Hilarious comedy. Sad that he is gone.

In the classic tradition of stand up comedy, there is probably none better. Although not my favorite movie, his pairing with Sam Kinison in Back to School was priceless.

will always be the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PlanetaryGear 11/21/2005
Rodneys range was limited, but he was the best at the whole "lovable-loser" schtick that he helped popularize.
GenghisTheHun 11/03/2005
Here was a first rate comedian who never lost his appeal to the audience. I don't care when or where you saw him, he was funny. What is most important to many comedians' success, we LIKED him! RIP!
holcombe.jorda n 10/06/2005
not impressed, maybe good for his time
rjy 09/19/2005
R.I.P. Rodney-you were one of the best!
dragonman 06/16/2005
How could you not like this guy? Very funny man and never lost his popularity.
gangstassnigga 06/10/2005
I was hoping not to mention the word 'respect' at all. Damn.
Randyman 05/07/2005
The MAN. I was saddened by his death last year. One of the funniest ever. He's got my respect.
ralph vincent 04/21/2005
no respect!! this guy is an all-timer. old school comic who always had the one liners. loved him.
Skizero 03/17/2005
while i always found Dangerfield endearing and enjoyed his pressence in movies like Caddyshack, and even found his movie Back To School very funny(i was 12 when it came out), Dangerfield's comedy was always a little one note. but i can't complain about that, it was his schtick. if nothing else he was a tireless promoter of the art of comedy, interested in getting new talent out there for the world to enjoy.
max9 02/25/2005
The greatest old school comedian . A unique style that none can copy . I give him much respect. I cant think of a funnier more unique comedian from his era. You really cant compare him to todays comics its a different game
edt4 01/24/2005
I don't know how truly gifted he was, but he made me laugh, and isn't that the whole essence of what comedy is supposed to be, when you boil it to down its most prosaic basic ingredients?
ChrisO1981 01/12/2005
I think he deserves the respect, but not to be the best ever... his stuff is funny, but I think there are a lot of comedians out there who are better.
tocwelsh 12/28/2004
Absolutely awful unfunny person, on the same line as Robin Williams, got to be a 1....
The Slacker 12/23/2004
Holy **** he died?! Awe man he was one of the GREATEST comics ever. Whoever gives him under a 3 after this should be killed!
bsd987 11/04/2004
I tell ya, no respect, no respect at all.
1JohnDoeFan 10/07/2004
One of the best comedians of all time. Died 2 days ago after he went into a coma after surgery. We WILL finally get his well deserved respect. R.I.P.
kamylienne 10/05/2004
I'm sorry to hear he passed away today after going into a coma after surgery. I guess he'll finally get his due respect. His official website is www.rodney.com.
King_Porus 10/05/2004
A great comedian. One of the best. Rest in Peace
southparker9 08/24/2004
Very funny comedian. All jokes work. No respect shtick never grows old. One of the best of all time.
BeatlesfanStev eo 08/23/2004
I never saw him as astand up comedian but he was great in Caddyshack.
Rater04 06/29/2004
OK FOR AN OLD GEEZER!
marcm9999 06/18/2004
One of the funniest of all time.
LadyShark4534 04/07/2004
Rodney Dangerfield can play just about any rule. He made us laugh in Caddyshack and he played a scary abusive father figure in Natural Born Killers. I never expected him to be so believable as that.
handy 03/23/2004
Rodney has paid his dues. He's very funny and a good actor as well. I respect him!
Moosekarloff 01/08/2004
Absolute scream as a stand-up comedian, showing better than when he has a script in his hand. That entire put-upon, beleagured middleaged whiteman schtick is just so right on the money. Dangerfield makes a very strong comedic point that such men aren't necessarily the enemy, as the postmodernist politically correct ethos would suggest, but just another type of human being complete with the foibles, quirks, shortcomings and fears common to us all. Rodney turns around the enemy identity of his age, gender and social class, disarms it, demystifies it, mining it for masterful comedic effect. And without either the reliance on stupid, mentally retarded, over-the-top knuckleheadism (i.e., that dreadful and unfunny Adam Sandler and the equally vomititious Jim Carrey) or the foulmouthed bathroom humor typical of the so-called comics of the younger generation.
jgls 12/22/2003
my personal favorite.
raybo67 11/18/2003
Wonderfully original. Nobody like him. Funny because everyone can identify with him.
SFShuggies 06/30/2003
One funny bastard! Caddyshack almost made me piss myself. Totally original
BIGBABY 06/23/2003
Way under rated. This man is awesome in both movies and just by himself. Rodney's best role was in Caddyshack. Back to School was also hilarious. I love his style, I havent seen him stand still in the same spot ever. Easily 5 stars.
DrFeelgood03 05/22/2003
He is really funny. The look just makes it though.
guitar102 04/27/2003
Still gets no respect! Did one of his one-liners suck? Don't worry, he'll bury you with another 5 that'll level you. This guy's the biggest encyclopedia of one-liners since Henny Youngman, and it's all his own stuff. If you're overweight, don't dare ask him 'How Fat?'.
LoneUSFullHous eFan 10/17/2002
'I don't get no respect' I think we can all relate to that at some point in time.
latinlover 04/02/2002
What power ever decided this man was funny? His jokes were outdated even in the days of Caddyshack, which to my opinion is the most overrated comedy of all time. To hear Rodney Dangerfield may a joke with a sexual innuendo is to wish for a quick and certain death.
Solenoid DH 04/02/2002
The only stand-up comedian I can think of that actually makes me laugh. His voice, nervous mannerisms and pop-eyes are hilarious. It's a shame he has to be vulgar so often, because he's at his best when he's not delving into seamy topics and bad language. Here are some of my favorites: "My girl friend's so ugly that when I took her to the top of the Empire State Building, airplanes started flying at her!" "I had a terrible time teaching tricks to my dog. It took me six months to teach him to 'sit.' Now I can't get him to stand back up." "When I was a kid, my parents gave me a dart board for Christmas. The darts had automatic return!"
CastleBee 06/27/2001
I admit I’ve laughed at him a couple of times but his humor is so weak it is almost consciously imperceptible. Mostly Dangerfield just impresses me as a licentious old codger. Aside from that, I would be willing to bet he has at least one or all of these other attributes – is an “in your face” kind of guy who spits when he talks and has a continual case of bad breath. All conjecture of course; it’s just that he comes across that way. His brief comeback was probably based more on his ability to stick around so many years rather than any capacity he has ever had to truly entertain.
