"No Rain" is one of those signature songs from the grunge era. As others have noted, Blind Melon's run was cut short due to the death of singer Shannon Hoon; however, Hood was not the main lyricist for this song. In fact it was bassist Brad Smith writing primarily about a past love interest who suffered from depression (eg she complained about sunny days since she had no excuse to stay inside). While the song is notable, I'm not sure that the track is generally recognizable to listeners of most generations though this could be due to the song being one of the younger entries on this list (as evidenced by the lack of covers). For those too busy dancing around like a bee, "No Rain" charted in the U.S. for 11 weeks in 1993, peaking at #20.

Pleasantly mellow track that expressed the hope to "keep my cheeks dry today" and find the someone who'd say "I'll always be there when you wake". The lyrics seemed to take an added dimension after lead singer Shannon Hoon died of a drug overdose three years later. Shortly after Kurt Cobain's death, Hoon performed on Letterman's talk show with a question mark drawn on his forehead. But unlike Cobain, death did very little to elevate his or the band's status. "No Rain" rode the wave of the angst-filled early 90's grunge movement, although the band was quickly dismissed by alternative music fans after it became clear how radio friendly and inescapable this tune that would define them was. A memorable video featured an overweight 10-year-old girl, longing for acceptance in a bee costume. Towards the end of the video, various grunge-types befriend the young outcast as they play around in a field in a dream-like sequence.

A fantastic tune, and a fantastic, creative video. Shannon Hood's death was a tragedy but he left the world something good in "No Rain."
