My wife, 18-month-old son and I stopped by after the Zoo Lights last weekend, having heard great things about the restaurant and not wanting to travel too far for food. Cut to the chase - the food was very good, comparable to Bombay, Vindalho, etc. Unlike those, however, where we have been with our young son, Plainfields does not have a single high chair or booster seat to accomodate families. Simply dumbfounding. Again, great food, and on a "date night" we'd come back. Just not with our child, which means we'll not likely be back any time soon...

Hands down this is the best Indian food in town. Everything here is done with a true chef's touch and it shows in the details. With that said, we probably won't be back, and here is why. The prices are just way to high. They are double the price of other good Indian restaurants. The place was nearly empty when we were there, and it certainly wasn't because of the food, it's the prices. I agree with another poster here that some changes need to be made. The inside needs some updating with some rich, bold colors the Indian culture is well known for. A fresh coat of paint would do wonders for this grand old house. The food prices also need to be rolled back dramatically. Unless you have a card or coupon to cut the prices, there are just too many other good Indian restaurants that are much more affordable. Birthday, anniversary, or favored out-of-town visitor, we almost always head to Plainfield's for delicious Indian food in celebration. We...

Last week my partner and I decided to once again to continue out quest for real authentic Indian Fare. Boy did we score! Plainfields, who would have guessed that tucked away on sw 21st (near PGE Park) there is place serving the most wonderful and flavorful Indian grub. First Impression: Beautiful building, a huge victorian mansion. Mango wood carvings adorn the wall, while the fireplace in the main dinning room gives off a warm glow. Crystal lighting fixtures really complete the elegant feel. Service: We were greeted with a smile and kind words, as if we were arriving at a family friend's home for dinner. First impression: cute and romantic. Some have said the decor is tacky but I think the white walls, Indian carvings, fresh orchids, tarnished silver serving dishes, low light and mosquito net curtains are nice. Sort of "Disneyland does Indian restaurant." In a good way. Menu: Beautifully written, with thorough descriptions and a good mix of well-known dishes and more exotic fare. I dined last night at Plainfields Restaurant. We sat on the patio which I think must be the best in Portland. It is in the back away from the street. Beautiful and elegant. My friend and I shared everything we ordered and were delighted by the size of the servings. The duck dish was melt in your mouth tender and the vegetarian selection had the best sauce. We also got an order of sauteed greens with homemade cheese and wild mushrooms that was so fresh and yummy I was glad there was some left to have for lunch today. I was amazed by the choice of wines. I could not resist the 2000 Zind Humbrect Tardive Gewurztraminer. Who knew that a list like this even existed in our city. We had an 1875 Madeira and 1963 Port for dessert. I have been there twice in the last three weeks and received wonderful food and good service. The food was really good (not overly salty as other reviews mentioned) and had lots of flavor. I eat a lot of Indian and found that this food had some really unusual and tasty combinations, like their cardamom nut sauce vegetables which are currently my favorite. The portions were pretty small for the price, and the two vegetable based entrees had very small numbers of vegetables. On the other hand, the meat entries, including the one with the shrimp, were almost enough to satisfy two. The naan that comes with the meal is bubbly and large (bigger than two hands), but you only get one piece and have to order more, so plan ahead... I have never had one piece be enough to finish my meal. The dessert menu is a little lacking, with really only one Indian option, the Kulfi (ice cream). I have not dined at the Plainfield's Mayur Restaurant since the return of its original owner(s). Although I am certain your food and service have returned to its glory days of yore. This note is to the woman who owned the restaurant briefly: I ask you to, please, let it go. The restaurant business is very competitive. Most restaurants fail, even in the hands of experts. Let it go. Hiding behind anonymous accounts does not hide the obvious writing of the author. Let it go. You're better than that.

I thought I would weigh in on the reviews on this site. A person that has not been involved with the restaurant since July 2007 has nothing better to do then make up false reviews to asuage her crumbled ego. This pathetic cry for attention or spite should not be taken to be a testement to what we do at Plainfields. Please disregard any reviews on this site and try us out for yourselves. We have been in business for over 30 years and have always done our best to serve our customers. Thank you for your attention.

I was really looking forward to eating at Plainfield's because I had heard good things about it. My friend called to ask a simple question and was treated VERY rudely by the woman on the phone who basically held the receiver away from her mouth while she trash-talked my friend and included swear-words in the mix. We could hear every word she said and there was absolutely no reason for her remarks. I think its a pretty bad sign that we couldn't even make it in there without being treated rudely. This is an expensive restaurant that should be putting the customer's needs first and they can't even seem to master the basics of phone manners.

Somehow my recommendation got taken down by someone...I am not and have not ever worked there, so if that is your excuse, that's ridiculous. Don't make yourself look bad by taking down reviews. It makes me NOT want to go there MORE! I called there in December to eat with four friends because we live RIGHT next to Plainfields. I called over there to see if we needed reservations and ask if we could use our Passport cards (which are-buy one, get one free entree cards) and the man on the phone said that he would ask for me. A woman answered the phone and asked, "how can i help you", Thinking that she just saw the phone sitting off the hood, I thought that she just picked it up, so I said, "oh, I'm on hold waiting for someone, but thank you." She said, "well, what can I do for you?" Again, I said, "it's ok, I think someone was going to come back and answer a question for me." We tried P.M. on a Monday evening. We had made reservations as indicated on their website. It was slow we we arrived. Three of our four person party were seated and we waited for our fourth. When she arrived the staff did not seat her nor did they indicate to her that we were seated. They just let her stand in the foyer and wait. dum. bad. The waiter (later I realized he is the *owner*) has a habit of leaning on the water pitcher will he talks to you. He rests his hands across the pour spout which a food handler no-no. yuk. bad - don't drink the water. (kinda authentic Indian - not drinking the water - but not the experience I was looking for that nite.) P.M. was out of three of the beers they had on the menu. This restaurant made me lose faith in Indian food. I had to go to Bombay Cricket Club(which was amazing) to restore my faith. If you order naan, do not expect more than a couple bites. The papadums tasted OK, but the six accompaniments left a lot to be desired(out of six, one was palatable). The entrees were basic and inoffensive, but for 25 dollars...yikes. They have an extensive wine list, but lack the proper staff to make reccomendations. If you enjoy being ignored without a reservation, tarished silver & tacky decor this place is for you. I am from Portland, grew up in the restaurant business, and go out to eat for 75% of my meals. I probably cook at home three nights a months. Plainfields gave me ammunition for a week about how ridiculous it was. In a creepy way, it was entertaining.

I love indian food and I've eaten at indian place around the world, including India. My conclusion concerning Plainfield's is... two thumbs down! Perhaps I caught them on a bad night, but I from what my palate gathered, this place is way overrated and way OVERPRICED. The food was very average with lots of deep fried items on the menu, a bad sign to begin with. The oil used for deep frying was OLD and the authentic sounding menu was way below par on the taste buds. I will not return. The service was good, but I don't dine for the service. BTW, corkage is 15$ and they do have a great wine list, especially an amazingly impressive Madera collection. I agree with another review... for the money, you can do much much better. Try India Palace in Hillsboro (or anywhere else) for half the price and twice the satisfaction. (No, I do not work there. Just lived nearby once and miss their simple tasty indian food).

After reading rave reviews on Citysearch, I was expecting a fabulous indian meal. I was really disappointed. The food here is indian-inspired at the most. My husband and I both agreed that the food was the least indian-tasting food we have ever encountered. We've lived in big cities all over the country and had authentic indian food before, this is not authentic indian. We'll be wary of Citysearch recommendations in the future. Don't trust the rave reviews. Come here if you want expensive mediocre food.

I just visited Plainfields website and there is an announcement that Craig Plainfield has re-taken over operations of the restaurant. We posted a review a few days ago based on our experience in June. Many people in our circle have gone to Plainfields over the years and had wonderful experiences. When I started reading the reviews here, I was puzzled - it was either end of the spectrum. Nothing in the middle for the rating. We will have dinner there in the next couple weeks and will write another review.

Food was not as good as many other indian options in PDX, too expensive, service was exceptionally poor.

Hey, not a bad place to eat if you want to bring your family. It's upscale for sure. From the decor to the dishes. I enjoyed the experience. I recommend the chicken dishes and the masala.

My boyfriend and I went here on my birthday in July . We'd seen online that they stay open until 10pm on weeknights. It turns out they are only open until 9pm, but they stayed open for us! And they treated us very special too. The food was amazing. My boyfriend is an Indian food connossieur and he loved it. Lovely outdoor seating, great servers, well, all the staff was great. I'm a vegetarian and he's a meat eater and we both loved it here. We took the server's recommendations on an appetizer and entres and they were excellent. Definitely recommend for special occasions!!

The food is good, the service nice and the menu diverse. The price is a little high, but worth it for the atmosphere. Don't sit in the back because it's cold. It's not as crammed as India Grill and more upscale than Swagat. Overall, nice place to bring a date.

we were there last night. we had a memorable evening. we received wonderful service. we are vegetarians and our server recommended a delicious combination of mung bean and some other dish with an amazing indian wine. service was great. food was amazing. there was some event at pge park with fireworks it was cool! theres a great view from the restaurant parking lot. our server was gracious enough to offer us to take our dessert to the parking lot to enjoy the prime view. we had a very romantic evening. you get what you pay for. we got what we paid for. we got an amazing evening that and we left a 40% tip because our eveninig was that amazing. pay no mind to the haters. they're a bunch of losers who have yet to write something nice. check out their profiles. losers....who goes on citysearch just to hate. losers.. get some therapy. losers... us.. real people.. non losers...

I am not a loser. Losers are people who go online and post fake reviews about their establishments in hopes that people will come. Losers are owners so desperate for business they go to these extremes to pull in "clients". Sad. Don't dine here or waste your money. Bombay Cricket club is fantastic!!!

Great vegetarian fare and the staff is very friendly. The restaurant is located so close to PGE park that dinner and a game can be had within walking distance of one another.

From the moment i walked through the door i it was made sure of that i was completely happy. I felt pampered, unlike most of the Indian restaurants i have been to. The food here is phenomenal. The service is great. And the place has a special kind of aura that lifts your spirits and warms you up inside. You can tell that the servers really care about your happiness by the glow of there faces. The owner cares so much about her costumers that she is at the restaurant most of the time supervising everything. Out of the dishes, I really can't pick a favorite! They are all so delicious! I cant really say anything i don't like about this place, when its hot out it gets pretty hot up stairs, but we just go sit outside. I love everything about this place. ;)

Plainfields was always a special place for us and our family members visiting from out of town. The last couple of times we called to make a reservation we were unable to get anyone on the line. Finally we decided to just show up and order food to take home. The meal was still delightful but not as wonderful as usual (tough and dirty-tasting scallops) and then we heard the rumor that they are under new ownership. Everyone working there had always been so helpful and knowledgeable and this does not seem the case anymore. We also heard that the new owner had promised to keep all of the old staff (that we loved) and apparently let everyone go only one month later. I'm hoping this is not true because we hate to lose our favorite restaurant in Portland. Was it possibly just one bad night? Can anyone shed some light?

The restaurant could have used some air conditioning, and the waiter could have been a little more on top of things, but this was seriously the very best Indian food my husband and I have ever had. We're already talking about going back... again and again and again. Who knew okra could be so delicious!

My dinner this past weekend was full of suprises, not the ones you would like when going out to eat. My wife and I had dinner reservations for our anniversary. Plainfield's USED to be our favorite place to come and enough some classic Indian food. Our server did not know the menu well enough when we asked about Vegan items. No knowledge of the wine or drink list. Our food came out cold. I am very bewildered by all this. What is going on? I bunch of "I'm sorry." from the owner doesn't rececify an awful dinner, which they are charging over $30 a plate for some entrees. No way. Never again. I'd rather keep my money and take my wife someplace else. Never again.

Wow, I'm glad I stopped by this place, but I might have just missed it if I hadn't missed a turn. This cute restaurant is right off the freeway and tucked at the end of a busy street. We decided to eat here as the place looked so exotic. Even in the light mist, there were a few patrons in the patio area. We sat inside the restaurant. The decor is very stunning. It is very much like a museum with authentic hangings on the wall. I've been to India and I'm not sure if these items are widely sold in the market. It gave me something interesting to look at while I was eating. My mother in law who was with me loved the place! Like all the reviews below, the food is incredible. I come to Portland often for business. Last week was my first time at Plainsfield Mayur. The food was amazing! I'll definitely come again.

Really good food. The Indian food in Seattle don't quite compare to this one. They offer quite the bank for the buck both quality and quantity. It's like one of those places you might find on Greenlake. It's in an old mansion. The air is a bit thick on warm days, but the aroma of the food helps to make it better. It's one of those must-eat places for the Seattlite who likes the smaller mama and papa places. Really cute. The waitstaff are friendly even though they are quite busy. They do a good job. Kudos to Plainsfield Mayur.

The service was friendly. I can tell the owner is new but learning fast. She was honest about it. No big deal. No long waits, just happy staff. Can tell they get along well. The staff was very welcoming. Poor lady, after getting all my food I wanted to sit outside in the patio. She was pretty nice about it too. The food is exceptional. Cook came out to talk to us. Definitely don't want to miss the food here. The tomato coconut soup is really good. I called for a second. Overall nice place to eat. Will definitely be back for more. My friend and I were at Plainsfield Mayor on Saturday night. We didn't have reservations and it was busy. it didn't take too long before we got a table and was seated though. We had the Baingan Bharita for appetizers. It's amazing how much they give you. We also ordered the Royal Biryani that was nicely touched with silver edible foil (neat experience!!) The owner/hostess explained this to our amazement. There's also a nice window that's fun to watch. You can actually see them making the garlic naan. Well, I don't know much about Indian food, but I would definitely try this one again. The food is very good and the people are so friendly. Oh and the wine goes great with the food. Good selection.

We have never tried Indian food and happened to run across this establishment on the way back to California. It's not too far from I-5. We didn't know what to order, but the server recommended 3 reaally wonderful chicken dishes. (I love chicken.) The service was friendly, the server was informative, and the experience was on of a kind. I highly recommend. The owner was charming. Not sure what people are griping about. We were seated promptly. Very good experience.

The BEST Indian food ever. I luv luv luv the velvet butter chicken. The sauce was Intensley velvety and buttery... YUM YUM YUM :) Even my children who always complain were silent during the meal. We were all sharing and so happy. The whole experience was so pleasant. As a single mom who doesn't get out often for dates; this beats any date night. 2nd time eating at Plainsfield Mayur. Quaint place with nice decoration. We ordered 3 dishes for under $50 and still some to take home. This is a meal for 3 people. Can't beat that. The food was delicious. The waitstaff tries extra hard to make the evening a delightful one, and it was. Good work Plainsfield. Nice change of ownership.

I wanted to do something nice for my wife of three years for our 3rd anniversery. I made a reservation at Plainfields and was blown away. the atmosphere was very pleasent. the food was great, and the service was beyond what i expected. thanks plainfields, i will be a faithful customer for many years to come.

We recently had dinner at Plainfields and had a really odd experience. Being greeted at the door is always a pleasure, but I don't need for the owner to tell me she owns the place. It made my friend and I feel really weird. She struggled opening a bottle of wine for us, which was again odd. Wouldn't you think an owner can provide proper service? The food was really good--- we had a veggie and vegan dish. However, I would rather just get something to-go than having to deal with this lady again. Tip to the wine drinkers--- A) bring your own wine key. B) This wine list has plummeted.

If you want to have a truley excellent dining expierience, then Plainfield?s Mayur Restaurant is the place! I have never been a big fan of Indian food, but this place is amazing. We were greeted by a the new owner, she was a breath of fresh air (Helpful and very Beautiful). She made us feel right at home and made our dining expierience very romantic. We tried a new addition to the menu that she suggested and the wine list was exceptional. The atmosphere was elegant and relaxing and the location is nice. The new staff was great, they were prompt, friendly, professionally and very attractive. It seemed like everyone was having a good time. Wow! I can't believe I've lived in portland for so long and only stumbled onto this treasure recently! I'd never even heard of it. I mean why is it called Plainfields? That doesn't sound Indian at all! So anyways, my receptionist had recently tried it out and was raving about it saying that i HAD to try it out. I'm not huge on Indian food. But she got me intrigued about it so I decided to take my wife there for our scheduled keep your sanity and get away from the kids night. Bear in mind, I lean towards steaks and lobster, this place blew me away! GREAT experience! I had the pleasure of coming in for dinner this past Sunday and have an outstanding time. My server was knew the menu very well, recommending outstanding dishes for me and my friend to try. We are new to the area, and he helped us out by recommending other places with various cuisines around the city. And actually, this was my first time eating Indian food, so I really had no idea what I was getting into. The food was just fabulous! Service top notch! Thanks Plainfields! I will be back!!!

The food was great. . the wait for the food was ridiculously long (it took over an hour to bring the food ).. .and the service was horrible. The server messed up our order. . and I had to ask other servers to fill my water.. and once I even had to get up to get us water. And to top it all, in the end the server was extremely rude to us. He practically threw the check at our table! and when we commented on the bad service.. he came to argue with us.. and walked off when i was still talking with him!! For a restaurant that charges over 18/20 dollars a plate.. I expected at least average service. . . I?m never going back there again.. and I certainly do not recommend it to anyone.

After reading the reviews below, I thought I'd try out the place. I have to say having eaten Indian food many times, I've never really had quite a delectable meal until I came here. If you've never tried Indian food, or even if you have, I highly suggest coming here. The food is amazing, the prices are reasonable, and the waitstaff are VERY helpful. We were new in town and invited to this restaurant by friends of ours. Being from the east coast we were accustomed to fine food and were pleasantly surprised with the excellent food and service. The atmosphere was pleasant; the waiter very cordial, knowledgeable, and attentive. Our glasses were always full. The wine was exceptional. The decors were visually stunning. We will definitely frequent this restaurant regularly, and would like to extend our highest compliments to the chef and staff for a classy and wonderful dining experience. We highly recommend this restaurant to everyone.

The food, atmosphere and service at Plainfield?s is great! It has been a few months since our previous visit and we were curious with a new owner how it would affect our experience. We were greeted by a friendly new face and it they the same welcome home attitude and feel that Plainfield?s always had for us. The food and wine is exceptional. We ate a familial favorite, tried a new addition to the menu, and the exceptional wine list is still there. The atmosphere has remained elegant and relaxing; a real treat. It is exciting to see the direction this loved and frequent stop for us is going. If possible to comprehend, Plainfield?s is better for the changes. The new staff is great. They greet us promptly, friendly, professionally, frequently, knowledgably and they?re attractive. We will continue to frequent Plainfield often!

We just ate at Plainfield's twice over the last month, both experiences were top notch, likely the best two experiences I've had over nine years of frequenting Plainfield?s. I was introduced to Plainfield's when I first moved to Portland and read a review. The review was correct: great food and wine! The first time my family visited I brought them as well, it has since become a required visit each time they travel here, a welcome requirement (I eat there about once a month on average). One thing has drastically improved recently, but first I?ll explain the past. All regulars I know whom I have witnessed eat there have always felt under appreciated. There was a server with a thick white beard that more often than not would be your point of contact who was cold to a fault. Oh, dear. Something has definitely gone wrong at Plainfield's. For years, this has been my favorite "special occasion" restaurant, but no longer. I and some friends went to Plainfield's on a recent Friday for dinner. There was no sign of Craig Plainfield. He has *always* been there on prior visits. In fact, I didn't recognize anyone on the staff that we saw. Our waiter was more than a little pushy in recommending that we order wine. He offered us "promotional" entrees when we were seated, but neglected to tell us that if we ordered one, we would be unable to use a discount coupon that I received a few weeks ago in a mailing from the restaurant. One of us did order a "promotional entree", and our waiter refused to honor the coupon (which THEY SENT TO ME, for heaven's sake!) when the check arrived. After hearing about Plainfield?s from a work friend, my husband and I decided to put this restaurant on our ?must-do? list .. and we are so glad that we did! We arrived at the restaurant without reservations?not the smartest thing to do on a VERY busy Friday night. However, our wait for seating turned out to be extremely pleasant since we had lucked into wine-tasting night right in their front lobby. We kept busy (and happy) sampling some terrific wines courtesy of the restaurant --a very nice touch and great start to our evening.
