Enough people have already mentioned how effective it was the last time they tried that.

So all I have to add is that I enjoy a couple of beers at the end of the day, and wouldn't appreciate that being taken from me.

There was this thing called Prohibition back in the twenties.

It worked so well, that it created organized crime as we know it today.

The fact that this idea would even be raised, 74 years after it failed disastrously, shows we really don't have any sense of our own history and are assuredly condemned to repeat the mistakes of our past. Considering how successful our "War on Drugs" and Dubya's "War on Terror in Iraq" have been, I guess we might just as well make alcohol illegal too.Why not? While we're at it, let's make gambling illegal too. Tried that, didn't work, but so what? Should we stop trying just cause it didn't work? Ed Meese, that stalwart Reagan-era symbol of morality and ethics, boldly attempted to wipe out what Lenny Bruce once called "stroke magazines" and, let's face it, they've been pretty well wiped out. Course, that's more because of the explosion of pornography (some of it quite sickening) on the internet, but...Somewhere, Al Capone must be smiling...

Several hundred counties in the USA are dry or prohibition counties, so you should be able easily to find paradise. Texas alone has at least several dozen counties!

Didn't, and can't work. Who rigged this thing to take us back to the 20's?  Might as well add  a mandatory  Do the Charleston Requirement.

Well this would end the popularity of Nascar. Once people aren't intoxicated, they'd realize that watching cars make left turns for 5 hrs isn't entertainment. However, I love beer, so I hope alcohol stays.

Stupid idea. I submit that we need to take control of our own lives. If you cannot control your drinking, smoking, drug abuse, its no ones fault but your own....do we need laws that basically dont leave us choices? You might as well live in a Socialist state! Its not the governments job to baby sit us all and I personally do not want them doing it any more than they already do!

Didn't this fail miserably before? Think about it. In the 20's organized crime got their hands on this end of the market and people got filled with lead over control of alcohol traffic. What will happen if we ban liquor again? The same thing.

Yes some people get crazed with it but most people drink just a little and turn out perfectly fine.

We already tried that, and it blew up in our face.Gangsters made millions, innocent people got killed in the crossfire, and cops were busy enforcing useless laws instead of fighting REAL crime, like rape, murder and robbery.

Alcohol is a great thing when used in moderation. When this is done, alcohol can enchance taste, promote livelyness, and show class. Alcohol is something everyone can gather around in a good manner and befriend one another. Everyone of age has the right do alcohol. It's your job to use it responsibly.

Terrible idea. Lame even. Some beer drinkers apparently feel strongly on this topic! Ha. Well I am not a real drinker at all but that's like outlawing sex so no deseases will spread. Losing idea.

There is no good that comes from alcohol. There are too many alcoholics and broken families due to alcohol.

Been there, done that. It was the catalyst for a crime spree the likes of which this country had never seen before.

The worst thing you can do is make it illegal - you then have absolutely no way of tracking consumption and monitoring whats going on. Then alcoholism and what-not will really get out of control and the problem with alcohol will be worse than what it is now.

I personally do not drink and prefer not to even be around alcohol myself. However I am not naive enough to think outlawing it would be a good thing. History shows how impossible a task it is. Besides who is anyone to try and dictate whether a person should be able to drink or not?

Alcohol is a useless substance. I cannot begin to comprehend why so many people enjoy the nectar of the stupid! It impairs your senses, makes you lose your self-control, kills brain cells, causes vomiting and can even kill! It doesn't smell good and I am certain that it doesn't taste good, as well. I see no reason to touch the stuff. And, once alcohol is vanquished from our underrated planet, the death rates will plummet!

Not a good idea. Imagine a world where I couldn't have a glass of wine or a beer when I chose. I'm not a major drinker-but I like to have a drink every once in a while.

Won't work because illegal drinking will still go on just as in the old Prohibition days. however, i hope for tougher penalties for drunk drivers and moms who abuse alcohol while pregnant in the near future.

You must not know must history, prohibition lead to a lot of crime and misery. If you make alcohol illegal people will find a way(by any means possible almost) to get it. Of course if we did make it illegal for a while, then maybe Hollywood could make some cool gangster movies again.

Having alcohol helps people deal with the fact that Utopia is not possible. Prohibition only helped increase organized crime in the United States, and there is no doubt that this would occur again if alcohol was made illegal.

Meth is illegal but that doesn't stop certain individuals from cooking it and selling it in a dark alley. Just remember that those who ignore the past are doomed to repeat it. Society tried this method before but the cons clearly outweighed the pros as people witnessed the birth of organized crime, bootlegging and a dramatic increase in violence. Would any of you be willing to see this happen again? I'm glad to see that most of you on here do not have the I.Q. of a brick.

NO BLACK MARKET!!! What kind of idiot are you?!?! I swear, if I could slap you... Prohibition is exactly what gave guys like Al Capone the kind of power they had. I must side with Kamylienne in that ANOTHER prohibition will not only fail to reduce (but rather increase) organized crime, but in that it will do nothing to curb domestic violence. It takes a certain kind of person to do such horrific things - I've never seen a bottle fly off a shelf and attack a wife or beat a child. Let's shed some of this puritanical baggage and start holding PEOPLE accountable, not liquids or pieces of steel (that one's for any of you gun control dimwits).

We've tried prohibition before and it didn't work. People are going to get alcohol by other means like they get illegal drugs. If alcohol is involved in a crime like drunk driving, then by all means they should be punished to the full extent of the law. Banning alcohol won't solve the problem because demand won't be stemmed. Besides, it's not bad to have a drink on occasion. The only thing you would be doing is punishing good citizens because a few people decide to use alcohol irresponsibly; drunkness is bad, drinking isn't.

Once again, a naive notion. Sure, alcohol can be made illegal, but people will still get it. Crime bosses will make millions illegally distributing alcohol. Millions of jobs would be lost nationwide. Prohibition didn't work in the 1920s, and its not going to work in the 21st Century either. We SHOULD severely punish drunk drivers who kill, but making it illegal is not the answer. Many different types of firearms are illegal, yet they are still finding their way onto the streets. Like with gun control, you'd only be punishing the law-abiding citizens who have a beer every now and then for the mistakes of those who use alcohol as a weapon.

Make it illegal all you want, it's not going away. Prohibition was done before. All that came of it was moonshine and the Mafia (the mob came about as a result of prohibition. The History Channel made an excellent documentary on Prohibition). Though drunk driving is a problem, as is spousal/family abuse stemming from alcoholism, making alcohol illegal won't get rid of thse problems. If made illegal, there will be people who will do it regardless of the law.
