More states continue to ban smoking in public places, but I doubt that cigarettes will ever be completely banned. As much as this non-smoker likes the smoking ban for public places, I don't think that people should be banned from smoking in the privacy of their own homes. An outright ban of cigarettes wouldn't bother me any, but I don't really think it will ever happen. Besides, the economy of several southern states is just too dependent on Tobacco.

What a good idea.  Its always important to make sure organized crime has a steady cash flow.

I don't smoke cigarettes, and I don't like smoke much, but I dislike bluenosers and self-righteous folks even more.

there is literally nothing to be gained from making them illegal.

the U.S. makes more than 19 billion dollars a year off tobacco taxes, money we definately need.
its the smokers choice to face the health problems smoking can cause.
its not up to anyone else to make that choice for them.

and 2nd hand smoke, if it bothers you then stay the fuck back. people cant even smoke inside most public buildings anymore so i dont know why its so hard to avoid.

Organized crime would like this very much. Have we learned nothing from alcohol and drug prohibition(s)?

I sort of agree that cigarettes should be illegal, but as North Carolina resident, there goes a lot of our economy, and I know the same can be said for parts of virginia.

I have been a smoker for 12 years now, maybe longer. The affect's that are now showing. 1. coughing for no reason and etc.. Out of all these years. I was able to quit for about 2 months. The reason I feel I started smoking again is because.(PEOPLE ARE SMOKING EVERYWHERE)
I hate smoking, but yet I still smoke.(even the smell).
I hate the fact, that our government has not yet made cigarettes illegal. Here are some reasons they are still legal.

1.Government tax money // company make cigarettes, government tax.. company ship's to another state, government tax... local store sell's cigarette's, government tax.. consumer smoker buy's, government tax... consumer keep's smoking to keep job's going so people can work. But then the consumer get's cancer, goes to expensive doctors. The smoker pay's the doctors, government tax. and repeat and repeat.

2.Goverment tax.. smoker buy's cigarettes, government starts enforcing smoking ban's everywhere. Smoker get's citation for smoking, government tax.. smoker tries to quit smoking aid, government tax.. and repeat and repeat.

3.Do you really think cigarettes will be made illegal anytime soon. NO Cigarette's are part of the global economy. Our government will never give up all the billion's they make off of cigarettes, unless they have something else that makes the money for them. They will waste our tax money talking about this issue for another 10 years (maybe 50 years)

Stop wasting time (our government) and put this down as something to truely vote on.
I'LL BE ONE OF THE SMOKER'S THAT WILL VOTE TO MAKE CIGARETTES ILLEGAL.

Personally, I think these public bans are great and will with time possibly make an impact on smokers. A friend of mine told me she was going to quit smoking just because she doesn't want to stand outside in the cold.

So they have the new ban on smoking in public places (not sure if it's everywhere yet though). I've lived with smokers my whole life, but have never picked up on the habit myself. I, personally, find that if I have a problem with someone smoking around me, I can either: 1) ask politely that they hold off until we part or 2) walk away myself; it's not as complicated as people make it out to seem.

As for types of places, I find it ridiculous that ALL places have banned it. Say, I go to a bar, I EXPECT there to be smokers. I'm not going to bitch about the smoke in a bar, because one goes there knowing it's bound to be present. Now, if I were going to the movies or to Church, that might be different. They've even got people continuing to bitch because they have to walk past the smokers to enter a building. I think it's going a bit too far when you want people to stand 500+ feet from the sidewalk, just because you can't take the 5 seconds to walk through that group.

On a side-note though---I honestly think there are more important things to worry about, than this.

First of all, the references to prohibition are a bit foolish. Just because some problems may be encountered by making cigarettes illegal doesnt mean that it shouldnt be done. I think the world would be more beautiful, happy and productive without the availability of cigarettes and alcohol. Unlike alcohol or drugs, cigarettes do very little for smokers. What the whole habit boils down to is keeping nicotine flowing in your blood stream. If you were to ask any smoker "if you could eliminate your desire to smoke right now forever by pressing a button, would you press that button?" there wouldnt be many smokers who wouldnt press that button. No one truly wants to smoke. It is an awful nicotine trap that kills more people than anything else. It works out pretty well for the government and the pharmacutical industries though.....The government makes a boatload of money through the taxing of cigarettes and has the added bonus of keeping the population numbers down, whereas the pharmacutical industries make a bucketful of money selling drugs to treat the myriad of physical conditions brought on by smoking. LETS MAKE CIGARETTES ILLEGAL! AFTER ABOUT A MONTH, NO ONE WILL BE COMPLAINING ANYMORE, AS A MATTER OF FACT THEY WILL BE VERY RELEIVED TO BE OUT OF THE TRAP THAT IS SMOKING!!!!!!!!!

I have no clue why people would want that nasty stuff on and in their body. That is why I do not want smoking to be aloud in the U.S

I detest the smell of smoke and would never do it myself, but others should have the freedom to fill their lungs full of smoke just as long as they don't do it around me.

The bottom line is that if you ignore history, you are doomed to repeat it; as many have pointed out, making things like cigarettes illegal will only lead to another type of prohibition. And the consequences of having another one of those would be disasterous...

Bad Idea.Remember what happened with prohibition? Gangsters got RICH,Police and innocent folks got killed and maimed in the battle between bootleggers and feds.I'd like to see Ciggarettes become OBSOLETE- because everyone finally chooses to live healthier-but making such things illegal only breeds crime and boosts the black market.

Banning Cigarettes would not be fair to the people who are already smokers. It would mean that they are breaking the law (smoking) for doing something they have no control over. That is why they are still leagl.

Yeah, let's have another debacle like Prohibition. I can imagine the fortunes to be made with smuggling if this happened.

The anti-tobacco cartel has already violated enough of our rights....if this happens, you can bet our Constitution will mean absolutely nothing then....

Cigarettes are banned in every single public establishment. The newest trend is banning them in bars in restaurants. If you don't like cigarettes you can certainly get away from them. Other people have different views than you, different likes and dislikes; let them live.

Have you ever been around someone that's trying to quit smoking? It's not very fun considering that they get irritated way too easy. Now imagine what it would be like to be around a group of about twenty loved ones. If you make any loud noise they will tear you apart. I know I've said it before but I'll say it yet again, just because it's illegal doesn't mean people are going to stop doing it.

I hate cigarettes--they stink--but please don't make them illegal. Give smokers a place to engage in their self-destructive habit where they don't bother other people. Make cigarettes illegal and you do two things: create a huge, crime-infested bootleg trade; and INCREASE cigarettes' rebel-appeal which is what gets kids to smoke in the first place, since it's always cool to be rebellious when you are 14.

I hate cigarettes. They are disgusting and cause psorasis as well as decay under your fingernails and they cause women to have great risks of infertility. On the other hand, If we ban cigarettes, There's gonna be a lot of angry riots.......

They stink, they pollute the atmosphere, they're just plain annoying. Oh, and they kill people, too-like my mother. Yes, I 'm all for making them illegal. However, I'm afraid if we made them illegal, people would still sneak smokes, like people sneak around smoking pot now. In the 20s, people got around Prohibition by having speakeasys. I guess if we made cigarettes illegal, smokers would have smoke-easys.

Sounds like a good idea. However, many people I know smoke, including my mom, brother, and grandmother. They will be upset. Also, even if we ban smoking, illegal smoking will still go on, as with illegal drugs.

Maybe if Maurajuana was illegal at the same time so doing this wouldn't be complete hypocrisy on the part of the government

I personally don't think inhaling smoke into your lungs is a good idea, but I think it's the right of someone to smoke if they wish. I think if cigarettes were banned, it woud have the same effect on society as prohibition had--they'll still be there, only things will be much worse.

I am wholeheartedly for this. Not because I want to infringe on someone else's right to kill themselves, but because I don't want to suck up that deadly smoke into my lungs. When I'm out in public and someone is smoking and it's going over my way where I have to breathe it in, then you are infringing on MY rights.

Cigarettes have no practical purpose. It's as simple as that. They only cause health problems, not only for the smoker, but to the innocent victims that the smoker is around. Also, imagine all of the money a smoker wastes on the useless cancer sticks. Why AREN'T these things illegal yet, anyway?
