McCartney was obviously a very talented guy, but he always had that Englebert Humperdinckesque/ Broadway quality to him, and that really broke free once he was on his own. With the Beatles, the sheer excellence of the group allowed him to come up with these sorts of things every so often and yet they'd still be great. He was never really able to keep that tendency in check, and in his solo career they really sucked . This tune was a big hit, but in that era, pretty much anything he put out was automatically destined for the top of the charts. The absolute worst hit he had in the first 5 post-Beatles years.

The single is the epitome of sap, a precursor of the pinnacle of sap to follow a mere two years later with Morris Albert's "Feelings." Unbelievably, "My Love" charted in the U.S. for 15 painful weeks in 1973, peaking #1 for 4 of those weeks. Not surprisingly, the song has been a favorite cover song for lounge artists such as Wayne Newton, Doc Severinsen, Andy Williams, Engelbert Humperdinck, and Cher, though there has been a few exceptions (e.g. the Ventures).
